Best Practices To Strengthen Annual Fund Giving

Notes de l'éditeur

  1. Floyd Review objectives for session: Overview of giving to the Foundation, specifically the Annual Fund The importance of annual gifts Tools to help track your giving and recognition Poll to get a sense of the audience (show of hands): Do we have any current or incoming club Foundation chairs with us? What about club presidents? How many people are just interested in learning more about our Foundation?
  2. Floyd Introduction: Regional Rotary Foundation Coordinator Joined Rotary while living in Maine and working in school administration. Moved to Fort Wayne, IN, and joined Anthony Wayne Rotary Club Held many positions over they years including club president, AG, Membership Chair, PolioPlus Chair, District Governor, and EMGA Spearheaded a water tank project in Mexico, three grants for surgical equipment at an eye surgery hospital, and play in important role in getting funding for clef palate and lip surgeries in Brazil. Member of the Arch Klumph Society and Bequest Society.
  3. Floyd Now I’m going to take a few minutes to introduce our panelists. We have Pier Giorgio Poddighe here with us today. Pier would you tell us about yourself? Pier Thank you, Floyd. I am a lawyer that specializes in criminal law. Before coming a Rotarian, I was Rotaractor. As a Rotarian I have held several roles, includes club president, district committee chair, district governor, and district trainer. I am a Major Donor and Benefactor of The Rotary Foundation. Floyd Thank you, Pier. Eric, can you say a few words? Eric I have been a Rotarian since 1986, developed a passion for all programs of The Rotary Foundation. Served as District Governor D9600, 2010-2011, forming Paul Harris Society during the year. Served as DRFC 2012-2016 and RRFC from 2016. Floyd Thank you, Eric. Marcelo, will you tell us a bit about yourself. Marcelo I am member of the Rotary Club de Santos Praia in District 4420. I’ve held different roles in rotary including district governor, TRFDC chair, training leader at the International Assembly, National Polio Advisor, EPN Zone Coordinator, Toronto Promotion Executive Committee,  District Cadre Model organizer. I am also a Major Donor level 4. Floyd Thank you, Marcelo. And thank you to all of our panelists.
  4. Floyd Lancia The mission of The Rotary Foundation is to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education and the alleviation of poverty. We accomplish this by using the expertise and compassion of Rotarians who foster effective and sustainable projects around the world. We are looking to the future and incorporating projects that bring us closer to our mission while supporting the amazing work of Rotarians. Through our Foundation, we reach out to both our local and international communities enriching the lives of millions. The support of individual donors is paramount to helping us achieve our goal of “doing good in the world.” Donors can support The Rotary Foundation by giving to three main funds: The Annual Fund – which supports Rotary’s work today The Endowment Fund – which supports Rotary’s future The PolioPuls Fund – which supports polio eradication efforts Today we’ll be focusing on the Annual Fund and the Every Rotarian, Every Year campaign which encourages every Rotarian to participate in a Foundation project and make a personal gift to the Annual Fund every year. We’ll talk about how giving to the Foundation works, why it is important to support the Annual Fund, and how you can track your personal giving.
  5. Floyd Lancia Rotarians and friends of Rotary can give to the Annual Fund by giving where funds are needed most through SHARE or to a specific cause that is important to them. Annual Fund – SHARE is the primary source of funding for a broad range of local and international Rotary Foundation activities. Through the SHARE system, contributions to The Rotary Foundation are transformed into grants that change lives. At the end of every Rotary year, gifts to the Annual Fund – SHARE from all Rotary clubs in a district are directed into two funds: 50% is credited to the World Fund which supports the worldwide grant and program opportunities available to all Rotary districts. This is the source of the Foundation match for Global Grants. 50% is credited to the District Designated Fund which can be spent at the discretion of district leadership to meet local or international needs. Eric, can you tell us about your experience with a global grant? Eric (share Global grant story) I’m working on a current Global Grant, vaccinating 28,000 school girls in Papua New Guinea against Cervical Cancer. Total Grant is $US 329,000.
  6. Floyd Lancia Thank you Eric. Impactful stories like these inspire people to give to our Foundation. Inspire your club by sharing District and Global grant projects. In addition to giving to SHARE to make unrestricted gifts to Rotary, Rotarians and friends of Rotary also have the option to give to our causes through the Annual Fund. This allows people to give directly to a cause that is important to them. This decision was made to attract non-Rotarians and non-giving Rotarians to The Rotary Foundation. Industry research has shown that donors want more and more specificity on where and how their funds are being spent. This also helps unite the fundraising arm of the Foundation with its grant-making model. The aim of this option is to acquire donors and offer avenues for people that have a passion for a specific area of focus to support TRF. One way to generate Annual Fund support is to hold fundraisers for one of our causes. This is a great way to engage non-Rotarians and non-giving Rotarians in the work we are doing. Alumni, like Global grant scholars and Rotary Peace Fellows, make excellent speakers at events like these. Each of them have pursued one of Rotary’s six causes. Annual Fund contributions directed to any of the six areas of focus are not included in a district’s SHARE calculations. Therefore, they do not generate any district designated funds (DDF). But they are included towards: A club's annual giving goal and per capita calculations; 2) Eligible for all Annual Fund recognition opportunities; including Every Rotarian, Every Year; Rotary Foundation Sustaining Member; Club Recognition Opportunities; Paul Harris Fellow; Paul Harris Society; Major Donor; and Arch C. Klumph Society.
  7. Floyd Pier, when you talk to your fellow club members about giving to the Foundation, how do you explain the importance of giving to the Annual Fund? Pier The Annual Fund is a building block for Rotary’s fundraising strategy, often serving as an introduction to giving to the Foundation. The generous gifts from Rotarians and friends of Rotary to the Foundation are the primary source of important Rotarian-driven projects like Global and District grants and supporting our Foundation’s mission of doing good in the world. The Foundation offers some resources that are great starting points for introducing members to the Foundation. These resources include the Every Rotarian Every Year brochure, the Rotary Foundation Reference Guide, and the Annual Report. These resources highlight the good work our Foundation does and how our donations are spent.
  8. Floyd Lancia Thank you, Pier. There are many ways individuals can give to our Foundation. Marcelo, what are some of the most effective tools to promote giving? Marcelo, Rotarians can always contribute through their club Foundation chair or send a check directly to the Foundation or the International Office that serves their area. Giving online at rotary.org is the safest and easiest way to make your gift. You can select where you want to give, how much, in which currency and how often. You can also make your gift a recurring one by enrolling in Rotary Direct. When you sign up for recurring contributions your preferred credit or debit card will be charged automatic contributions at an amount and frequency most convenient for you. You can enroll in Rotary Direct by selecting a recurring frequency of monthly, quarterly, or annually. Rotary Direct is the easiest way to give and schedule payments. It also helps minimize the work of club leadership by allowing participating Rotarians to set a contribution schedule that counts toward Paul Harris Fellowship, Paul Harris Society, and Major Donor.  NOTE: Online contributions can be in any of 15 currencies, while preserving local tax benefits in most cases. For example, a Canadian Rotarian can donate via Rotary.org in Canadian dollars and receive a tax receipt from the Canadian Associate Foundation. Rotary’s website accepts contributions in the following currencies: Argentine pesos , Australian dollars , British pounds, Canadian dollars, Danish kronen, euros, Japanese yen, New Zealand dollars, Norwegian kronen , South African rand, Swedish kronor, Swiss francs, Indian Rupees, and United States dollars .
  9. Floyd Lancia Thank you, Marcelo. Who here is signed up for Rotary Direct? Eric, how do you track your giving? Eric, You can track your giving and recognition using the Donor History Report. This report is available at My Rotary and shows not only how much you’ve given and to which funds but also what recognition you have achieved. The first page of the report offers a concise summary of your giving summary but the following pages also show each individual transaction. If you are a club or district officer you also have access to other useful reports to track giving in your club and district. This includes the Club Recognition Summary. This report is useful for planning fundraising strategy and stewardship outreach. Club Recognition Summary – is primarily used to see Foundation recognition points of club members, the date of each member’s last gift, and who is enrolled Rotary Direct. Useful to see who in your club is close to becoming a PHF or who has a lot of Foundation recognition points for matching points challenge. Also allows leadership to identify donors who gave last Rotary year but have yet to give this Rotary year. This report can help you tailor your communications to fit a variety of audiences.
  10. Floyd Lancia Thanks, Eric. There are a number of different strategies to build the ongoing support from Rotarians and friends. We must educate our fellow members about the importance of giving to the Foundation and find the cause that is most compelling to each individual donor. Then, we must give them the opportunity to act and thank them for their support. Pier, Eric, and Marcelo, what are some strategies for promoting giving to the Foundation that work well in your areas? Pier A district’s approach to educating its Rotarians about the Foundation cannot be left to one or two or four Rotarians. It requires the assembling of a knowledgeable and dedicated team. It needs to be incorporated into programs at Rotary events like District Assemblies. Inform Rotarians of the recognition that The Rotary Foundation provides. Encourage clubs and their members to take advantage of the recognition opportunities for strong support of the Foundation’s Annual Fund. Create fundraising campaigns for targeted groups like young donors or lapsed donors. Don’t forget to ask! Use personalized ask amounts to increase donor revenue and new donor numbers. This is based on capacity and willingness to give. When they do, don’t forget to thank them. Eric (share details on MMD) Million Dollar Dinners – First MDD in Australasia conducted in D9600, in partnership with D9630. Has been promoted and successfully conducted in most States of Australia and New Zealand.   “Centurion” money tubes – fill with $2 coins = $100 – used as an introduction to personal giving amongst members. Marcelo Only 33% of Rotarians give to The Rotary Foundation. The solution is to engage members in grants, Rotary Peace Centers, VTTs and Polioplus, so they can experience Rotary programs, and educate them about The Rotary Foundation. Districts should benchmark their performance. To do this they need an action plan and fundraising chair. When developing new goals and initiatives their needs to be a subcommittee and a timeline. All of this will help create a culture of giving, and motivate people to give. Floyd Thank you for sharing these strategies with us. Now we’ll take time to answer questions.
