INTRODUCTIONS

creating a global commitment to mobilize
the necessary resources.
Stop Hunger Now
Stop Hunger Now
Serve Locally, Impact Globally
• Stop Hunger Now INVESTS its meals in programs
designed for personal sustainable development,
• including:
– School Feeding Programs
– Orphanages
– Vocational Programs
– Agricultural Programs
– Adult education classes
– Early Childhood Development Programs
•
Stop Hunger Now also provides meals in response to natural
disasters, famine, and other crises.
Meal Distribution
• It’s all about the IMPACT–
proving that we are making
a difference
• SHN works with distribution partners to
measure:
• Educational variables: Enrollment,
Absenteeism, Graduation rates
• Health variables: Height, Weight,
Skin/eyes, prevalence of illness
• Reports available on SHN website,
Social media outlets
• SHN supplements reporting with in
person field visits
Measuring Impact
• It’s about being either being able to grow one’s
own food, or having enough income to buy food.
• Education is the key to breaking the cycle of
poverty
• Investing nutrition in schools can increase
enrollment and graduation rates by 200-300%
• Every year of primary school = 10-20% increase in
future earnings. Increased future earnings = no
more need for food assistance.
Is Packaging Meals Sustainable?- YES

  1. Good afternoon! Welcome to our session Today about Ending Hunger in our Lifetime. We are excited to be here to meet all of you, and to share our work and vision of Stop Hunger Now and your service as Rotarians with Stop Hunger Now. Please allow me to make introductions of our presenters here today. My name is Jim Green, and I am the Chief Development Officer for Stop Hunger Now. Also with me today is Tiki Keh, the President of our Stop Hunger Now Malaysia office. And Chris Jones, our Manager of Rotary Relations. Thank you for your warm welcome, and we look forward to sharing with you today how Stop Hunger Now is working to end global hunger. And how we value our relationship with all Rotarians and Rotary clubs.
  2. At Stop Hunger Now, we believe in humanity’s ability to end hunger in our lifetime.   Every person we hire, every decision we make, every dollar we invest is informed by this singular vision: a world without hunger. We all KNOW we can end hunger in our lifetime, because we have evidence that the world is winning this fight.  Over the past twenty years we have seen a 23% DECREASE in the amount of food insecure people.  Even in a time of amazing population growth, we have seen this dramatic decrease.  But now is not the time to take our feet of the gas pedal! We are here because we believe that Rotary International and Rotarians are already involved and make great partners in this fight to end hunger in our lifetime. I can speak about this all day, but maybe a short video would help explain a little better. (Play videos on next slide)
  3. Wow, what a powerful video that is. I am always shocked by the numbers, and am motivated based on that to help our organization meet the goal of ending hunger in our lifetime. By looking at this map, you can see that Stop Hunger Now is a global organization. The map shows where we have offices noted by the Stop Hunger Now logos, and then where we have offered Meal Distribution or other Essential Aid as noted by the fork and spoon icons. And this map is continually growing.
  4. At Stop Hunger Now, we understand and KNOW that we will never end hunger by feeding people. In order to end hunger, we must assist and help people create their own solutions. This is why we invest our resources in sustainable development programs. In this way we are not only feeding people, we are educating them.  We are helping them gain new skills, helping them grow their own food.  Helping them claim their own destiny. Of course we realize that hunger can also be caused by and exacerbated by natural and man made disaster, so we are committed to helping people with the basics after devastation strikes.
  5. We know that we are only as good as our results. So we focus just as hard on being able to measure what we do. After all, it is the difference being made to people’s lives that matter. As we select our Impact Partners, we demand that they report back to us on the variables shown on the screen. The impact is what makes the difference. Stop Hunger Now is so committed to demonstrating that our programs work, and they truly do.
  6. Because of the sustainable and life changing, empowering methods we use to invest our meals, mela packaging is part of the longer term solution.   We all know it is not the final solution, but by working closely with the people in need, together, we can help travel the long road to full ownership and sustainability. As you can see by the results on this slide, when we partner together, we are achieving powerful and long lasting results. Through education, we can see a 10% to 20% increase in annual earnings for every year of primary education in a developing nation.   When coupled with the power of adding nutrition in schools to help a child’s little brain fully develop, this can break the cycle of poverty. If we can scale this up to societal levels, this can change the outcomes for whole communities.
  7. As this graphic demonstrates, it is not only impactful...it is efficient.   According to the Global Nutrition Report 2015, for every US dollar you invest, you will see a $16 return. We see the long term health benefits, from preventing conditions such as stunting and other diseases related to malnourishment,  on productivity and healthcare cost savings. In the long fight against hunger, every dollar counts. This is why we use them as wisely as possible.
  8. Tied to nutrition, is the ability of people to produce their own food. Increasing the capacity of smallholder farmers to improve their crop yields, thereby increasing their own food, and income is another key component of our current and future work. These projects are built with deep consultation with the local communities, managed and owned by the local communities, with investment and consultation by Stop Hunger Now. Some examples of what types of projects our community partners have requested are: Fish farming/aquaculture, drip irrigation systems and training, peanut farming and natural resource management.   Click the clicker These are great examples of projects that The Rotary Foundation Global Grants would work well with. Chris Jones can help you with this.
  9. Here is a list of some of our current projects. Again I would point out, that these projects are perfect for Rotary Global Grants. Haiti: Tilapia project Guatemala: Agriculture diversification and Tilapia projects South Sudan- Economic empowerment (Peanut shelling), Demonstration farm, vocational training projects Armenia: Vocational training center and income generation projects Belize:  Agricultural vocational training center for at risk youth Liberia: Agricultural program
  10. This slide demonstrates our commitment to sustainable solutions to hunger. The majority of our investments are used in life changing educational programs either through schools or orphanages. The next largest group of investments are to general feeding, but what we have learned is that these programs tend to be utilized by our schools.  These are largely meals sent home to help nourish children and families outside of the school day.
  11. An additional area of focus for Stop Hunger Now is our Gift In Kind Program. Donating to Stop Hunger Now is a great way to give back and get involved. There are lots of ways to donate to our partners. From seeds to soap, to medical and school supplies, you can help the people we serve by donating product or money toward the purchase of these products. Take a look at some of the options we have available. Speak to some of the elements on the screen
  12. Speak to some of the elements on the screen
  13. We are most actively in search of providing medicine and food to a Developing country hospital that has secure storage. The location must have experience clearing medical shipments. And it must be located in a country that allows the importation of medicine with a minimum of 6 months of shelf life remaining at the time it arrives to the destination country. If you can assist in helping us with connections, please contact Paul. His contact information is on the screen. I would encourage you to snap a picture of this slide.
  14. Let me update you on an exciting initiative we have in July! We call this event, Follow the Sun, because we will be packaging all across the globe literally all day long – well days long. Join Stop Hunger Now the week of July 13-20 to package meals across the globe. Celebrated on July 18 in honor of Mandela’s birthday, Mandela Day is an opportunity to inspire individuals to take action to help change the world for the better, and to build a global movement for good. Stop Hunger Now is offering an exciting opportunity to be part of this movement. In conjunction with this special day, Stop Hunger Now South Africa is leading a global initiative to package meals during the week of July 13-20. We hope you’ll join us in celebrating Nelson Mandela’s legacy. Please consider hosting a Mandela Day meal packaging event with your club or district to help us reach this exciting goal!  Citizens across the globe are encouraged to devote 67 minutes to make a positive difference in honor of Mandela Day--one minute for every year of Mandela's life. Our friends and colleagues at Stop Hunger Now South Africa are leading the way, and have asked all six International Affiliates and our 20 locations across the United States to package meals in recognition of this global celebration.
  15. And now let me bring to the front, Chris Jones, who is leading Stop Hunger Now’s relationship effort of Rotary International and all of its clubs and districts. Chris, come on up.
  16. Thank you Jim! Rotary International has been very gracious to Stop Hunger Now as they have given us the opportunity to package meals at the last 3 International Conventions. You can see on the screen how we have increased the number of meals we have packaged at these Conventions. Rotarians seem to really enjoy the hands-on service project and the ability to have fun while making a difference. This is something that we find at every meal packaging event we do. Rotarians having fun while making an impact!
  17. In fact, Stop Hunger Now relied on Rotary greatly in our early days. Our Founder, Ray Buchanan, is a Rotarian. And through his connections, Rotary helped to pioneer our meal packaging program. Rotarians have packaged more than 10% of the overall meals Stop Hunger Now has delivered since 2005. We have several districts that have completed 1 million meals. And we are looking for more districts to do just that. Anyone in this room willing to step up to that for their district? If so, please see me sometime during this convention.
  18. And the work the Rotarians do is a global effort. We are very proud that Rotary clubs in 11 countries have packaged meals with Stop Hunger Now. And Rotary connections have led to Stop Hunger Now opening locations in the countries that you can see on the screen. Now we operate in more countries than just these, but these are the countries where Rotary has been the conduit for Stop Hunger Now’s growth there.
  19. The impact that Stop Hunger Now is having on hunger eradication is tremendous. While the growth in the USA is shown in red, notice the growth (which translates to impact) in blue. That is the international piece of our overall growth. Rotary is having a significant impact on that as well as Rotary clubs are packaging more and more meals. Thank you! Now let me introduce to you our President of our Malaysia office, Tiki Keh. He will spend a few minutes discussing our Affiliate program. Tiki, come on up please. Next slide
  20. It is our mission to eradicate hunger in our lifetime. And now with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal of ending hunger by 2030, we are poised to achieve this.   But think about this,… There are more hungry people in the world than the combined populations of the United States, Canada and the European Union. As we expand, we are using an affiliate model to go into new countries. It is very effective and we are seeing tremendous results. This slide explains a bit about our International Affiliate Program. There are many benefits, which include local economic development. This is Fair To All Concerned and Builds Goodwill and Better Friendships!
  21. So as Stop Hunger Now continues to grow, we will need to add International Affiliates. Rotary has been a great resource to Stop Hunger Now in developing new contacts for expansion that we wanted to mention this to you today. The benefits are plentiful to all involved. Being able to engage local people, and then being able to respond more quickly in the event of disasters, along with overall increased capacity to provide additional support is a win for everyone. This is IMPACT! I will be available after this session to answer any questions you may have, and you will also be able to find me at the Stop Hunger Now booth #2602 in the House of Friendship or at our Meal Packaging event happening today, tomorrow, and Wednesday. Chris, let me turn this presentation back over to you now. Thank you.
  22. Right now we are passing around some samples of the bags we have packaged here at this convention. Traditionally each bag contains the items that are listed on the screen. However the ingredients may change slightly depending on the country the meals are being packed in.
  23. So what is it that you need to do to host a meal packaging event? Talk to the points on the slide
  24. So now let’s talk about how your Rotary Club can join up with Stop Hunger Now. First of all the benefits: This is a hands-on service project. Yes, your club will need to do some fundraising to participate with Stop Hunger Now in this project. This project satisfies the need to do an International Service Project When the meal packaging event is opened to the local community to participate in also, we typically find that some that have come in to participate and have learned more about the great work that Rotary is doing, locally and globally, that they then also wish to be a part of Rotary’s great work and will start inquiring about joining your club. So this is a great membership attraction tool. Again, with opening this project to the local community, more people begin to realize the great work that your Rotary Club is doing. This is the type of event you can invite the press to come and see. This will earn your club great Public Image! This project always seems to bring the club members closer together as they work together to solve world hunger. And they start to get competitive during the meal packaging event too. All in a fun way! Everyone always finishes the event with big smiles, and a sense of accomplishment. Members will talk about this service project for weeks, if not months to come. If you have an Interact Club or Rotaract club attached to your club, this is a great Youth Services Project for them to get involved with. And they can do it as a standalone event or inclusive with your club. I have seen it done both ways. This is also a great service project during a RYLA event. But in the end, what we are doing is transforming lives. Together we are making a very large impact on lives of those whom we will never meet, but we know in our hearts that we have made a difference. We have done good in the world, as Arch Klump intended.
  25. So you might ask, how do Stop Hunger Now’s projects fit within the Rotary Foundation’s Six Areas of Focus. Let me explain: There are areas in the world where food is fought over due to food insecurity. When food is provided, either through our meal packaging program, or through some of the sustainable development programs we offer, we are eliminating the need to fight over food availability. The meals that are packaged are full of vitamins and minerals, thus giving the recipient the ability to better fight off diseases Through a partnership we have with the Organization, Wine To Water, we fully and completely support WaSH programs with clean water, sanitation projects and Hygiene Training solutions. Since most of our meals go to school feeding programs, orphanages, maternal clinics, and the like, we are absolutely saving mothers and children In the food insecure areas, parents send their children to school to get what is possibly their only meal of the day. The students end up getting an education as a byproduct of the fact that the child went to school for a meal. With an education, the cycle of poverty can be broken And through our sustainable development programs, we have solutions, like Tilapia Farming, that can create economic engines to grow local economies. So Stop Hunger Now is very well aligned with The Rotary Foundation’s Six Areas of Focus.
  26. So now let’s talk about some takeaways: We are changing the face of hunger We have an effective model The model is being replicated Rotary is a leader in this effort You can read the testimonial from a Rotarian in North Carolina in the USA which I think captures the essence of what we do and the collaborative spirit of what Stop Hunger Now and Rotary have together. We do value Rotary, and myself as a Past District Governor, and incoming Zone Coordinator, I think the world of what we do at Stop Hunger Now – a great humanitarian organization, and one that shares so many of the same objectives as Rotary. We are a great alliance!
  27. This recent excerpt from what Trustee Chair and Past Rotary International President, Ray Klinginsmith, says is powerful. The fact the Rotary has: 35,000 clubs 1.2 million Rotarians And is located in 200 countries and geographic regions Gives all of us the kind of power that has almost fully eradicated Polio. I believe that Rotary can do the same with global hunger. I would like to challenge all of you to help Stop Hunger Now completely eradicate Global Hunger. Will you rise up and do so? If there is time -- Let me share one last video with you. Next Slide
  28. Come by and see us in The House of Friendship at booth 2602. Thank you for being with us today. We hope that you enjoyed this presentation on Ending Hunger in our Lifetime, and how you can engage your Rotary Club and District in this effort. Let’s also thank Jim Green and Tiki Keh for their presentation today.
