Chris: Greetings everyone, thank you for coming to Major Gifts, Major Impact. I am joined here today by:
Past RI President John Germ is leading our Polio fundraising efforts as Chair, of the End Polio Now: Countdown to History Committee. He lead our $200 Million Challenge is which we surpassed our fundraising goal by raising US$228.7 million. John and his wife Judy are Arch Klumph Society donors,.
Vinay Kulkarni has served Rotary in many ways including DG and RRFC. Vinay will continue to lead the Water and Sanitation Major Gifts Initiative Committee next year which will be his third year serving in this role. Vinay is a true fundraiser, during his year as DG his District’s total contributions totaled $900,000 and he is well on his way to leading the WAS*MGI Committee to meeting their goal of $25 million. Vinay is also an Arch Klumph Society donor.
Geeta Manek comes to us from Nairobi, Kenya where she was born and raised and continues to live with her husband Kaushik who is also a Rotarian and PDG. Geeta is a real pioneer being the first and only woman DG in district 9200. She is extremely involved in Rotary locally and also on a larger level, she has and is serving on numerous committees, including the Basic Education and Literacy Major Gifts Initiative Committee and this coming Rotary year will lead the Health Major Gifts Initiative as Chair. Geeta and Kaushik are also Arch Klumpf Society donors.
Dr. Anne Matthews has had a very influential Rotary career. She is a PDG, PRIVP, has served on numerous committees and is currently Chair of the Basic Education and Literacy Major Gifts Initiative Committee. Anne is an educator by profession, a published author, an education accreditation commissioner and has served in several management roles in the SC State Department of Education. We are very lucky to have her leading our BEL*MGI efforts and here with us today.
Before we dive in I should probably give a bit of background on myself as well. I am Chris Offer from Rotary Club of Ladner in British Columbia. I have had the pleasure to serve as DG and RRFC. I am currently an E/MGA and Chair of the Peace MGI Committee. My wife Penny is also an involved Rotarian and we are members of the Arch Klumph Society.
Now to get things going, we have a great presentation for you today and we will close with a brief Q/A. We request that throughout the presentation you write down your questions and we will do our best to answer them at the end. However if we do not get to your question we will forward it to them best Foundation volunteer or staff to follow up with you so please write your name and email.
We will now start off with an update from John Germ on our polio fundraising efforts. John…
John: Thank you Chris,
At the Atlanta convention last year Rotary and the Gates Foundation announced the extension and expansion of our funding agreement.
John: As you can see by our progress this year. Major Gifts have played an important role in getting us close to our goal.
John: Give to Polio in cash and DDF
Commerate World Polio Day by tuning in to the livestream or some other event
Chris: Thank you John, I will now pass it over to the Health Major Gifts Initiative Chair, Geeta Manek
Geeta: The Rotary Foundation has been raising awareness for the areas of focus since the Future Vision pilot. In April 2015, upon recommendation from the Fund Development Committee, the Trustees approved the Areas of Focus Major Gifts Initiative to capitalize on donor interest in making gifts to a specific area of focus. The Areas of Focus Major Gifts Initiative was officially launched 1 July 2016 with water and sanitation. Basic education and literacy and peace launched 1 July 2017. Health which will combine the maternal and child health area of focus and disease prevention and treatment will launch 1 July 2018. Lastly economic and community development will launch 1 July 2019.
Geeta: The launch of each initiative is facilitated by a Chair and committee. Vinay Kulkarni has led the water and sanitation MGI Committee, Anne Matthews has led the Basic education and literacy MGI Committee and Chris Offer has led the Peace MGI Committee. This July I will lead the Health MGI Committee. The MGI committees drive cultivation and solicitation efforts through communications, events and personal solicitations.
Geeta: As most of you are aware, there is a great need around the world for clean water, education, pre-natal care, immunization efforts and much more. On the screen you can see some overwhelming numbers. But the amazing thing is that it can all be prevented through Rotary’s work in the areas of focus. Rotary is giving us the opportunity to make a difference through the Areas of Focus Major Gifts Initiatives.
Geeta cont: The Areas of Focus Major Gifts Initiatives has a goal of raising $25 million for each area of focus in the next three to five years through endowed gifts (outright and testamentary), directed gifts “formerly known as term gifts”, and DDF transfers to the Endowment Fund. Living in Kenya, I see first hand (Geeta, add in your story of why you supported an endowed fund for maternal and child health)
Chris: Thank you Geeta, for all you do. I will now pass it over to Water and Sanitation Chair Vinay Kulkarni.
Vinay:
Vinay: Just like Geeta, living in India I see first hand what the impact is when people lack education, health care and most of all water. I would like to share an example from my own District 3131. D-3131 is in an area of major draught brining a huge shortage of water and therefore our priority has been water projects. D-3131 implemented a large global grant in water and sanitation benefitting three rural areas of Bhigwan, Lonare and Kaldari. The project benefited the local villagers and farmers by
Improvement in existing water bodies, storing of rain
water, and improvement in ground water tables.
Availability of water in summer
Improvement in hygiene, economic condition and
standard of living.
This is only one example of the many projects that D-3131 has implemented through the generosity of its members, as well as non Rotarians and governmental organizations. D-3131’s efforts has also brought in 10 AKS members.
The grant I just mentioned was spearheaded by a directed gift “formerly known as term gifts”. Directed gifts are used in their entirety to support a specific program as indicated by the donor. This is a great way for donors to see the immediate impact of their gift in their community while supporting the areas of focus major gifts initiatives.
Vinay: After successful implementation of Major projects with TATA Technologies & Rotary Club Poona North from Dist.3131.
Now TATA Technologies has signed MOU for $1,50,000 with TRF India to carry out projects in the AREA OF BASIC EDUCATION & LITERACY for Major Impact In entire India.
Chris: Little did Rotary know when it launched the Rotary Peace Centers Major Gifts Initiative that it would ultimately raise over $160 million in gifts and commitments to this global project. Some organizations would have stopped there – but not Rotary! We recognized that the need for peace activities is greater than ever. The Peace Area of Focus provides even more opportunities for Rotarians and others to address issues relating to peace and conflict prevention and resolution.
The Peace MGI launched, launched in in July 2017, brings together the continued fundraising effort for the Rotary Peace Centers with the complementary fundraising for the Peace MGI. This combined initiative has a goal of $75 million over three to five years – but that will undoubtedly change as these two programs continue to grow.
This year, the Trustees approved some exciting changes for the Rotary Peace Centers. The number of Centers providing Certificate programs will increase over the next several years to four in total, and the Certificate programs will encompass a year of on-site and on-line activities. The search process will begin in the fall, with an initial focus on the Middle East and North Africa for potential site. The Master Programs will focus on Peace and development, recognizing the link between the two. With these and other changes – and there are many more – the need for endowment will grow. This is Rotary’s preeminent educational program, and I encourage you to work with the Peace MGI Committee members and E/MGAs to reach those who have the ability to support it.
There are new peace-related naming opportunities that will help us raise support. The Rotary Peace Symposium in Hamburg will offer a wide array of opportunities for support, from general gifts to offset expenses, up to a half million dollars to for a sponsorship. Peggy Asseo or a gift officer will be more than happy to explore these opportunities with you.
Finally, keep in mind the new Positive Peace Workshops in Mexico and Columbia in Rotary Year 2019. These workshops are being held in partnership with the Institute for Economics and Peace, and are under the global grant umbrella. These and other similar opportunities can be supported through the new Entrepreneurial Fund naming opportunities. Here’s your chance to support the growing new peace activities! Again, the MGI volunteers and staff will be pleased to talk with you if you would like additional information.
Now, I will hand it over the PRIVP and Basic Education and Literacy Chair Anne Matthews
Anne: We all know how important it is to support the Annual Fund to help people around the world live better lives today. But we also need to think about supporting these life changing programs forever and that is through building our Endowment Fund. Our Endowment is invested in perpetuity and a portion of the earnings as directed by the Trustees is made available every year. As you have heard the Areas of Focus Major Gifts Initiatives are heavily focused on Endowment Gifts and this can be made through an outright gift or through a bequest. Starting at $25,000 and going up there are several naming opportunities to support your district, the WF and of course the areas of focus and the Rotary Peace Centers. As we progress towards our goals for the Major Gifts Initiatives, we are also moving closer to the Endowment goal of $2.025 billion in outright gifts and commitments to the Endowment by 2025. If you want to learn more about making a lasting gift to the Endowment please reach out to any of us or your E/MGA and/or your Foundation representative. We are here to make sure your philanthropic goals are met in the best way to make the biggest difference today, tomorrow and for many years to come.
Anne cont: I would now like to open it up to questions while we have a few minutes. And as Chris mentioned in the beginning of the session, if we do not get to your questions today we will pass it along to a Foundation staff member.
