2. Rotary Community Peace Conference
• The first Rotary sponsored peace conference for the
community
• A part of a Global Grant #1746412
• Free and open to the general public in Greater L.A. area
• Culmination of a year-long Peace Educational Program
at Glendale Unified School District
3. Peace Educational Program at GUSD (1)
• Teacher/staff orientation on the Peace Educational Program in
September
• Presentation of seeds of a A-bomb survived tree from Green Legacy
Hiroshima to 400+ students in the English Japanese Immersion
Program at GUSD, an opportunity to learn about “Hiroshima.”
• Opening of the new “Rotary Peace Library” within their school
libraries.
• A field trip to the Japanese American National Museum for students
to learn about the internment experiences by the Japanese
Americans during WWII.
4. Peace Educational Program at GUSD (2)
• School assemblies with Hibakusha, A-bomb survivors, Japanese
American internees, authors of books on peace.
• Students to work on Peace Projects during the 2017-18 school year
• Rotary Community Peace Conference in April, 2018
• Speech contest winner to Hiroshima for two weeks. The winner to
present her/his report to the community upon return in the fall of
2018

6. Purpose
of
the First Rotary Community Peace Conference
• First step for peace: mutual understanding
• For students to present the results of their peace
projects
• To reach out to a larger audience: the students’
families and community members besides Rotarians
• To provide stimulus and information so each can take
an action for world peace after the Peace Conference
7. What We Plan to Do
at Rotary Community Peace Conference:
* Student Project Presentations
* Student Speech Contest on Peace—the winner to be sent to
Hiroshima and her/his report upon return to L.A.
* Lectures and presentations by specialists on peace,
including organizations against nuclear weapons, Rotary
Peace Scholars, authors of peace books, Hibakusha bomb
survivors, Japanese American internees during WWII, etc.
* 1,000 Paper Cranes each to L.A. Children’s Hospital, JANM,
and Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park
