70. Do you have ideas or suggestions to improve the quality of life for Service members, Wounded Warriors, Family
members, Retirees, and Surviving Family members? ARMED FORCES ACTION PLAN (AFAP) is the program to share
these ideas with. We are currently accepting issues/recommendations for improvement for the 2013 AFAP
Conference scheduled for October. The deadline to submit your ideas and suggestions is 5 SEP 2013.
AFAP Issues have been responsible for literally hundreds of legislative, regulatory and policy changes involving the
Services and geared towards improving the quality of Service Member's life and enhancing readiness and retention.
Among the changes benefiting all JBLM services that have come through AFAP are pay increases, dental benefits,
TRICARE reform, life insurance, housing allowances, and enhanced educational opportunities.
How it works:
At the JBLM AFAP Conference, delegates from across the installation, comprised of Service members, Family (Active
Duty, Wounded Warriors, Reserve, Civilian Employees, Family members, Retirees, & Surviving Family members),
review and prioritize the issues that are submitted. All their input and experience goes into working the issues and
finding resolutions.
Although some issues take time or are proven unattainable, every issue is reviewed, monitored, and tracked until a
resolution is found. About 90% of AFAP issues are retained and worked at a local level, resulting in ongoing
community improvements. Issues beyond the scope of Joint Base Lewis-McChord are forwarded to a higher level of
authority.
If you would like additional information about AFAP, please contact the AFAP office at (253)967-9496 or

are often many questions about children’s needs and behaviors as well as how to deal with them. The NPSP is a
personalized and effective resource for parents.
Classes: Registration is required for all NPSP classes. Please call 253-967-5901 to register. Free childcare is
available for all classes. Children must be pre-registered with CYSS to receive care.

led by trained facilitators who are committed to help parents create a positive and healthy environment where
their family can thrive. Common Sense Parenting targets interventions for toddlers and school aged children.

parenting. If you find yourself overwhelmed with parenting and don’t have the support you need to be the parent
that you want to be, then this group is for you. Parents will learn and practice mindfulness skills to decrease stress.

aggression, disrespectful language and much more. You will also learn how to assist your child with starting a new
behavior such as chores, manners, and respectful language.
Children’s Groups These are ongoing support programs for your child to interact and play with peers, and for parents to
connect with other parents.
 Infant Play Group: is a laid back, interactive atmosphere for parents and infants to begin socializing with one
another. Infants may benefit from socializing with other infants and learning new ways to communicate. Parents

COUNSELING FOR YOUTH THROUGH MILITARY ONESOURCE:  If the child is younger than 13, he or she may participate in Family counseling only. There is no individual counseling for children younger than age 13.  If the child is between 13 and 18, they can have individual counseling but the parent must participate in the first session. Telephonic counseling is not available to this age group.  If the child is over 18, they can request and attend counseling on their own. For all callers in crisis, regardless of age, MOS will assess for risk and provide assistance as appropriate. A suicidal caller would not be turned away because of their age. MOS would work with the caller to ensure their immediate safety and to connect them with appropriate support services. Please note, MOS should not be promoted as a suicide hotline. A more appropriate resource would be the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (1-800-273-TALK). Do you have ideas or suggestions to improve the quality of life for Service members, Wounded Warriors, Family members, Retirees, and Surviving Family members? ARMED FORCES ACTION PLAN (AFAP) is the program to share these ideas with. We are currently accepting issues/recommendations for improvement for the 2013 AFAP Conference scheduled for October. The deadline to submit your ideas and suggestions is 5 SEP 2013. AFAP Issues have been responsible for literally hundreds of legislative, regulatory and policy changes involving the Services and geared towards improving the quality of Service Member's life and enhancing readiness and retention. Among the changes benefiting all JBLM services that have come through AFAP are pay increases, dental benefits, TRICARE reform, life insurance, housing allowances, and enhanced educational opportunities. How it works: At the JBLM AFAP Conference, delegates from across the installation, comprised of Service members, Family (Active Duty, Wounded Warriors, Reserve, Civilian Employees, Family members, Retirees, & Surviving Family members), review and prioritize the issues that are submitted. All their input and experience goes into working the issues and finding resolutions. Although some issues take time or are proven unattainable, every issue is reviewed, monitored, and tracked until a resolution is found. About 90% of AFAP issues are retained and worked at a local level, resulting in ongoing community improvements. Issues beyond the scope of Joint Base Lewis-McChord are forwarded to a higher level of authority.
