2. BIOGRAPHY OF JAMES NAISMITH
James Naismith was “born in 1861 in Bennies Corner, which is a small community
near Almonte, Ontario. Naismith went to elementary school in Brownies Corner and
attended high school in Almonte” (Lunn, 2022, p. 9). After his high school life in
1883, he went to McGill University and completed his education with a Bachelor’s in
Physical Education (Lunn, 2022, p. 9). Through the years of his education, he was
involved in many sports (football, lacrosse, rugby, soccer, and gymnastics); many
would describe him as a very talented individual (Lunn, 2022, p. 9). He was very
skillful in gymnastics and that led him to become the head instructor of gymnastics at
McGill University (Lunn, 2022, p. 9). In 1887-1890, Naismith was an instructor of
PE at McGill University. He also continued his education in theology at Presbyterian
College in Montreal (Lunn, 2022, p. 9). Photo retrieved from

3. THE INVENTION OF
BASKETBALL
• James Naismith was a “Canadian-American sports
coach and innovator” (Biography.com Editors,
2015). At the age of 30, “Naismith left his
athletics director position at McGill University to
teach physical education” (Biography.com
Editors, 2015) at the Y.M.C.A. at Springfield
College in Springfield, Massachusetts (Lunn,
2022, p. 9).
• One day, his boss requested him to create an
indoor sports game to help athletes stay physically
fit during the cold winter in New England
(Biography.com Editors, 2015).
• His boss also told him the new game he will be
creating should be “fair for all players and not too
rough” (Biography.com Editors, 2015).

4. THE
INVENTION OF
BASKETBALL
- Since he had the body foundation of a fine athlete who was
involved in many sports, he thought of a brilliant idea that
could certainly impact the world and meet his boss’s
satisfaction.
- It was in 1891, “he invented the game of basketball” (Lunn,
2022, p. 9), one of the most popular sports in the world, it
was a sport at the Summer Olympics in St. Louis, Missouri
(Biography.com Editors, 2015).
- He started out “using 10-foot-high peach baskets as the
goals for each 9-player team” (Biography.com Editors,
2015). Naismith also created the “first rulebook of
basketball and created the first basketball program at the
University of Kansas” (Lunn, 2022, p. 9).

5. THE INVENTION OF
FOOTBALL HELMET
• Naismith played football while obtaining his master's in physical
education in Springfield College, “Naismith played centre like he did in
McGill” (Sports Legend Revealed: Did the inventor of basketball,
James Naismith, also invent the football helmet?, 2010).
• He realized the game of football requires a lot of physical contacts,
especially the position he played, “centre”, which is “constantly
overmatched by its opponents is, to say the least, painful” and he would
be “repeatedly brutalized” (Sports Legend Revealed: Did the inventor of
basketball, James Naismith, also invent the football helmet?, 2010).
• From suffering many traumatic injuries and accidents, such as
“perichondrial hematoma”, “short term memory loss” when he was
unable to “recognize his friends on the field” (Daily, 1 C.E.) and more
(Sports Legend Revealed: Did the inventor of basketball, James
Naismith, also invent the football helmet?, 2010).
• Therefore, Naismith decided to find a way to help not only him but to
others who play the game of football, he “designed the first football
helmet” (Lunn, 2022, p. 9).

a hard worker and determined
to make an impact on the
world. His legacy will last
forever because he invented
one of the most popular
worldwide sports.
