Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia was established by
theDecreeoftheUSSRGovernmentonFebruary5th,1960and
was named Peoples’Friendship University. In February, 1961 it
was named after Patrice Lumumba and in 1992 it was turned
into Peoples’Friendship University of Russia (PFUR).
In February 1975, the University was granted an award of
Peoples’Friendship for its contribution in preparing specialists
from Asian, African and Latin American countries.
Main peculiarity of our University lies in its multicultural
character.Todaythereareabout28,000graduates,post-grad-
uates and interns studying at PFUR.They represent more than
500 nations and nationalities from 152 countries from all
around the world.
The high quality of education provided at PFUR is displayed
through the success of 90, 000 of our alumni who work in al-
most all countries around the world. Among them are a num-
ber of Presidents and Prime Ministers, hundreds of famous
politicians and successful businessmen.
WithinhalfacenturyofitshistoryPFURhasbecomeaworld-
known university and gained popularity as a classical univer-
sity which has been holding leading positions among the best
Russian higher education institutions for many years growing
rapidly up in the international rating lists.
According to the World QS rating PFUR is in the list of Top-
500 world universities (there are only 10 Russian universities
listed inTop-500 world universities).
According to joint project by the ‘Interfax’ Informational
Agency and the QSWorld University Rankings 2014, PFUR is in
Top-100 universities of BRICS states, and 7th among the uni-
versities of Russia, CIS and Baltic countries and 1st in the in-
ternalization.
The University is ranked 4-6th in the National University
ranking 2011/2014 held by the‘Interfax’Informational Agen-
cy and‘Echo of Moscow’.
Peoples’Friendship University of Russia is a great scientific
centre that is taking an active part in carrying out scientific re-
search and experimental development projects within the pri-
orityscientificareas.PFURhasoneofthelargestsystemsof30
dissertationcouncilsinRussiaintendedtoassessscientificand
pedagogical qualifications, i.e. to grant diplomas in PhD and
Doctoral degree.
It is due to active scientific work done by the PFUR research-
ers, that provides the University with high ranking positions

intheRussianandinternationalrankingsystems.Accordingto
Russiansciencecitationindex(RINC),PFURisranked6thinthe
total number of publications among 10,500 higher education
institutionsandscientificcentresinRussia;–4thamong1,000
higher education institutions in Russia, – 3rd among the uni-
versities in Moscow, 17th in the index of works cited in Russia
and 5th in the index of works cited in Moscow.
PFUR academic team consists of 500 doctorate degree hold-
ers, over 1, 200 Phd holders. There are 57 academicians and
corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences
and other state and public academies; 28 Honored Scientists
ofRussia.26peoplearehonorarymembersoftheinternation-
al academies and scientific communities. More than 500 em-
ployees are inventors and rationalizers.
Due to their outstanding contribution in science and edu-
cation and the great input into the development of friendship
between the nations, 26 outstanding people from Russia and
other countries were awarded with PFUR Emeritus Professors.
Among them are 2 monarchs, 8 presidents and 2 Prime-Min-
isters.
The University has established long-lasting and firm inter-
national ties with universities as well as international organi-
zations worldwide. PFUR is a member-university of Interna-
tional Association of Universities (IUA), founder and member
oftheEurasiaUniversityAssociation;NetworkUniversityofCIS
member counties, the SCO University (Shanghai Cooperation
Organization), participant of programs of the Association of
Academic Cooperation, member of the Black Sea Universities’
Network (BSUN) and others. PFUR has signed more than 400
agreements of cooperation with foreign universities and sci-
entific centres.
PFUR is a leader among all Russian universities in the to-
tal number of master’s programs in English (more than 30),
as well as joint master’s programs offered in cooperation with
leading world universities (more than 100) which gives stu-
dents an opportunity to receive 2 diplomas at the same time:
one of PFUR and another one of the university-partner.
PFURprovidesalltherequiredconditionsforstudiesandlei-
sure, including well-developed infrastructure. PFUR campus is
one of the best in Russia which has been proved by a number
of awards at annual contests for the Best campus and student
hostels of universities of Moscow and Russia.
PFURprovidescompletesecurity:alluniversitybuildingsare
equipped with modern systems and automatic fire alarm in-
cluding electronic access system and modern system of vid-
eo surveillance to monitor the University territory with 2, 000
video cameras.
Peoples’Friendship University of Russia takes special care of
students,teachersandemployees’health:PFURhasapolyclin-
ic, sanatorium and Medical service centre, more than 70 de-
partments of medicine, a Complex Program‘Health’. Annually
PFUR students and employees undergo a complete examina-
tion. Healthcare is provided with the opportunity to stick to a
healthy diet and do sports- there are more than 20 cafes and
restaurants with exotic traditional dishes of different coun-
tries, physical recreation centre with 45 departments and 40
kinds of sport. Among PFUR graduate and post-graduate stu-
dentstherearewinnersofMoscow,Russianandworldcompe-
titions, including those held in 2013-2014.

The University, where international students come to spend
5-10 years of their life, provides all required conditions for the
young people to develop and realize their potentials in more
than 30 clubs, groups and studios at Interclub, and develop
leadership skills and active social position at student self-gov-
erning bodies.
High-quality education, knowledge of foreign languages,
research skills, personal contacts and international network
provide demand for PFUR graduates on the labour market in
Russia and abroad.

In 1965, the first 288 young specialists from 47 countries
of the world graduated from PFUR and in 1975 the University
trained about 5,600 specialists including 4,250 graduates for
89 foreign countries. On September 14, 1960, following the
order of Rector PFUR admitted the first international student
which got the Student ID card №1. It was Ahmed Murad Taki
from Sierra Leone. In 1966, he successfully graduated from
the Faculty of Medicine and underwent a 1 year internship
training. After returning to his motherland Ahmed Murad
Taki worked as practitioner and headed a Medical college in
Freetown for many years.
The first foreign postgraduate who successfully defended
the PhD thesis in 1968 was Kante Kabina from the Republic of
Guinea who graduated from the Faculty of Science of PFUR in
1965. After returning to his motherland Kante Kabina worked
asdirectoroftheNationalInstituteofScientificResearch,dean
of the faculty in the University of Conakry and general director
of Department of Bauxite.
The first foreign PhD candidate who defended in 1977 his
doctoral thesis for the degree of Doctor of Biological Sciences
was Honmode Jayant Dattatraya from India who graduated
from the Agrarian faculty of PFUR. At his motherland he
headed the Department of Veterinary Medicine of the
University located in Akola for many years.
In 2006, PFUR awarded its 50,000th diploma. It was
awarded to Jose Antiencia Villagomez (Ecuador), graduate
fromtheFacultyofEngineeringwithmajorin“Automatization
and Control”.
As of today Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia has
trained more than 90 thousand specialists from almost all
countries of the world. Every year about 5,000 specialists
graduate from the University.

Every year the proportion of Master’s students from the
general student population is about 15%.
In 2010/2011 academic year 2,024 students studied at
Masters level, in 2011/2012 academic year their number rose
to 2,342 students, in 2012/2013 academic year it reached
2,883 students.
International students
In 1960, 589 international students from 59 countries
studiedintheUniversity.Thus,during55yearsoftheexistence
oftheUniversitythenumberofforeignstudentshasincreased
10 times.
Recentlytheincreaseinthenumberofinternationalstudents
exists due to the students from CIS countries. Therefore, in
2014 their number at all the faculties and institutes reached
2,262 people.
PFUR also admits students from far more countries now,
including Asia-Pacific countries, United States and European
countries.

French agency AFNOR Certification in 2011;
 the certificates were confirmed based on the results of a
control audit by AFNOR Certification in 2012 and 2013;
 receivedaRussianCertificateofQualityinaccordancewith
GOST R ISO 9001:2008;
 in December 2013, all higher education programs of PFUR
received accreditation of Rospotrebnadzor until 2020.
24 educational programs of PFUR received international ac-
creditation of European agencies.
Based on the results of monitoring of the performance of
federal educational institutions of higher professional educa-
tioncarriedoutbytheMinistryofEducationandScienceofthe
Russian Federation in 2013 PFUR was featured in the list of ef-
ficient universities.
Many things have changed in the University for the last few
years: the number of faculties and specialties has increased,
new multilevel structure of higher education (bachelor -
master - PhD) has been introduced.

Starting from 2007-2008 academic year students of all
faculties and specialties moved to a new system of training
with the use of credit points, similar to the ECTS with the
issuanceofasingleEuropeanDiplomaSupplementofhigher
education in foreign languages.
For all the disciplines and majors that are part of the
system of credit points there is a point rating system which
includes a multipoint system of credits and a methodology
ofranking of students.
Since 1996, PFUR has a quality management system
for education. Following the Edict of the President of the
Russian Federation of 12 March, 2012, PFUR obtains the
right of developing and implementing its own standards of
the main educational programs.

Peoples’Friendship University of Russia has more than 150
laboratoriesandscientificcentersinwhichscientists,PhDcan-
didates and students carry out research in all fields of basic
and applied sciences. Thanks to the technical support of sci-
entific laboratories there are 7,5 students per one laboratory
space (comparing with 7,2 in 2010). Current laboratory devel-
opment of teaching materials, electronic publications of study
materials, laboratory ofTV and Radio service (TV PFUR) and a
classroom(complexoflaboratories)ofconferenceinterpreting
allow to implement many projects. The classroom of confer-
ence interpretingactualized the need for a program of train-
ing interpreters which is implemented at the Philological fac-
ulty.Laboratoryofdevelopmentofmodernteachingmaterials
and electronic publications and printing of modern teaching
materials located at the publishing complex of PFUR allows
to provide edition and printing of modern teaching materials
and other printed materials of the University staff as well as of
non-university authors.
Modernizedscientificlaboratoriesprovidedevelopmentand
expansionoftheresearchcapacityofPFURintoppriorityfields
of science and technologies. High-tech equipment including
unique allow to carry out not only R&D but also commercial
research and to determine development of innovative educa-
tional courses and programs for bachelor and master studies
as well as programs of supplementary professional education.

Joint Educational Programs with foreign universities
International cooperation is an inherent part of the work
of Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia as an internation-
al university. It is also an important instrument of securing
the quality of education and its compliance with internation-
al standards.
Elaborationofjointeducationalprogramswithforeignpart-
ners universities is an important aspect of inter-university co-
operation.
Peoples’FriendshipUniversityofRussiaisaleaderamongall
Russian universities in the field of joint educational programs
with the leading universities of the world. The University has
114 programs of Double diploma education with European,
Chinese and CIS universities, including:

 9 programs with Chinese universities;

 1 program with a Canadian university.

the main marketing technologies of universities and help to

Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia is in the forefront of
all the universities engaged in elaboration of educational pro-
grams in foreign languages. International impact of such pro-
grams is reflected in the growing adaptation of PFUR gradu-
ates to the global labor market. Thus, in 2014 the University
has 31 master’s programs in English, French and Spanish for
foreign and Russian students.

In 2014, Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia has 9
postgraduate training programs in English.
Choice of your future profession and the university which
can give you knowledge and skills that will be relevant in the
labor markets in the near future is an important decision in
anybody’slife.TheDiplomaofPeoples’FriendshipUniversityof
Russia as a traditional university which offers high quality ed-
ucation that meets international standards is highly valued by
employers. Due to this fact the number of those who want to
study in PFUR is steadily rising.
In 2014, the total number of applications submitted to the
University reached 30,099 which was 1.936 applications more
than in 2013 (28,163) and 5,767 applications more than in
2012 (24,332).
In 2014, admission of full-time students was carried out in
51 majors, with only 5 of them having contract spaces with
payment of tuition fees.

In 2014, 15,798 applications were submitted to 748 state-
funded places which led to 21,12 applicants per 1 state-funded
place. The enrollment competition for 18 majors was 30 and
more applicants per one state-funded place.

Preparatory courses of the Russian language for interna-
tional students started their work in 1960, whereas other 6
faculties (Engineering, Historical and Philological, Medical,
Agronomy, Faculty of Science, Economics and Law) started in
September, 1st
, 1961.
In the 1990s, new faculties started functioning at PFUR
(Ecological, Economics, Law, Philology, Humanities and social
sciences, Upgrading skills for teachers of Russian as a foreign
language, Upgrading skills for medical workers), as well as
newinstitutesofForeignlanguages,Worldeconomyandbusi-
ness, Distant education, Hospitality and tourism, Gravitation
and Cosmology, new systems of pre-university education and
continuing professional education were developed.
In 2000, Chair of Policy in Higher Education with the status
of UNESCO Department was initiated.
In2011,Educationandresearchinstituteofcomparativeed-
ucational policy started functioning at PFUR, and in 2013 the
Institute of applied technical and economical expertise start-
ed its work.
In 2014, subject to the structural changes at PFUR, Faculties
of Medicine and Law were reorganized into the Institutes of
Medicine and Law.
Today Peoples’Friendship University of Russia consists of 7
major faculties, Faculty of the Russian language and general
disciplines,7educationinstitutes,2educationandresearchin-
stitutes,InstituteofMedico-Biologicalproblems,3facultiesof
upgrading skills, 3 all-University departments, more than 150
labs as well as 2 Centres for Collective usage.

In 1960, 194 teachers and researchers started training stu-
dents from Asian, African and Latin American countries. The
academic and research team included 4 Doctoral degree hold-
ers, professors and 26 PhD holders, associate professors.
Tenyearslater,initsanniversaryyear(1970)PFURacademic
team consisted of 864 people (84 Doctoral degree holders and
388 PhD holders).
Today total number of PFUR employees has reached 5, 000
people with 2, 464 teachers (506 Doctoral degree holders, 1,
153 PhD holders), with potential and skills to provide quality
training of specialists and carrying out scientific and research
work in the outlined research frames.

in priority research areas in close cooperation with many re-
search institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences and oth-
er leading scientific organizations from Russia, CIS and foreign
countries. Every year in PFUR master and doctoral theses are

In 2014, the victory of a research team led by A.
Skubachevsky in the competition for the right to receive

PFUR. Grants are given for 2 years to finance the costs of
basic and applied research, including the priority areas of
science, technology and engineering of the Russian Feder-

ThetrendsinthedevelopmentofhighereducationinRussia
require close ties between education and scientific research,
especially in the priority areas of science and technology, thus
the University considers the area of scientific and research
work of students one of the most important areas of its devel-
opment. The fields of activity in the frame of Students’scien-
tific research correspond with the priority R&D areas of PFUR.
In 2014, the number of students engaged in different forms
of R&D reached 1,500 people. The University departments
hold 75 scientific study groups with the total number of par-
ticipantsofmorethan1,200students.ThePFURStudentscien-
tific society leads an active work as well.
In 2014, Peoples’Friendship University of Russia held a total
number of 50 scientific and scientific-practical conferences of
students, graduates and young scientists with 10 of them be-
ing international and 13 – all-Russian.

Each year the interest for scientific research is rising which is

The students of PFUR actively participate in implementing
scientific research results in production. In 2014 30 students
worked in small innovative enterprises founded at the prem-
ises of PFUR.
R&D activity is funded from different sources: scholarship

get included in research teams engaged in funded scientific
activity (303 students in 2014).

Dissertation Councils
30 dissertation councils for the defense of the PhD and Doc-
toral dissertations work in PFUR today and provide training of
highly qualified staff in 15 branches of science and 67 special-
ties including:

The year 2013 was full of changes in reorganization of the
Higher Attestation Commission of the Russian Federation.
In February 2013,V. Filippov, rector of PFUR, was appointed
chairman of the Higher Attestation Commission.
Following the Decree of the Government of the Russian Fed-
eration in 2013 Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia was
elected as one of the 10 Universities for approbation of“Elec-
tronic HAC”system.
In November 2013, the website of the PFUR Dissertation
Councils (dissovet.rudn.ru) began to work. It conducts the
check of theses using the“Antiplagiat”system.

property” in the “Patents and certificates”. Database contains

Training of high qualified staff is one of the main fields of
concern of the University faculty and staff in the contest of
innovative changes in the education system of the Russian
Federation. In 2013/2014 academic year 3,227 people were
trained at all modes of training of high qualified staff.
In 2014, PFUR in cooperation with the leading European
partner universities realizes 23 programs of a double scientif-
ic management.
PFUR is ranked 1st among Russian universities in the pro-
portion of postgraduate education which is equal to ap-
proximately 20% of students of BEP (with master studies
taken into consideration this figure reaches 30%).

In 2013, the University participated in the competition for
the admission quotas to graduate school and residency for the
first time and received a state accreditation of basic education

from our partner –universities visiting PFUR and about
300 PFUR lectures visiting our partner–universities.

academic exchange
There are more than 500 exchange students having visited
PFUR within the academic mobility program in accordance
with the agreements of cooperation with an average annual
amount of 400 – 450 students in 2010 – 2013.
In 2014, more than 300 international students arrived at
PFURtocarryoutstudiesandtakeupinternshipswithinofthe
studentexchangeprograminaccordancewiththeagreements
between the governments on cooperation with foreign
universities.
The recent years can be characterized with a rise of
popularity and variety of forms of such progressive types of
student exchange as summer (holiday) schools. There are
more than 100 students visiting PFUR summer schools.

Since2002,intheUniversityhasbeensuccessfullyfunctioning
the PFUR educational portal (EP) which is a structured web-
portal with websites distantly updated by registered users.
EP is intended for constant use by all university units and
faculty in order to transfer part of the classes from classrooms
to its webpages and to broaden the opportunities of the
professors and students.
EP is an automatized system which unites all educational
websites of all professors, disciplines, majors, departments
and faculties on the Internet.
In 2014, the PFUR EP contains 71,000 units of educational

guage (including one-to-one classes in the USE format) in or-
der to help the schoolleavers enter any Russian university spe-
cialized in Medical studies.

Department of the Russian language of the Pre-university
faculty headed by E. Motina was the first department estab-
lished at the University. In October 1960, more than 100 pro-
fessors of Russian language started to work in the University.
The Department was divided into sections of Latin America,
South-Eastern Asia, Middle East and Africa and study groups
of international students were formed subject to their majors.
Currently PFUR has 10 departments of Russian language
which teach Russian to Russian and international students.
Russian language is taught by about 300 professors in-
cluding:
 20 DSc;
 136 PhD;
 6 incumbent and corresponding members of state and
public academies of sciences of Russia;
 4honoraryworkersofhigherprofessionaleducationofthe
Russian Federation.
From 2010 to 2014, professors of the Russian language
wrote 500 textbooks and manuals, including 104 with labels
of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Feder-
ationandnationalacademicassociations.Textbooksandman-
uals developed at PFUR are widely used in Russian universi-
ties as well as in foreign ones. For instance, the textbook by C.
Khavronina and A. Shirochenskaya“Russian language in exer-
cises”has been used for 50 years and published 70 times in 18
languages.
PFUR specialists in Russian philology participate not only in
academic but also in scientific activity as well. For the last 5
years they have prepared 2,500 publications, including:
 450workspublishedinscientificjournalsfeaturedinHigh-
er Attestation Commission register;
 500 publications issued abroad;
 45 monographs;
 scientific articles devoted to the Russian language and
methods of its teaching.
Professors of the Russian language of PFUR maintain close
scientifictieswithMoscowStateUniversity,RussianLanguage
Institute of RAS, Institute of Linguistics of RAS, Pushkin State
Russian Language Institute, specialists in Russian philology
from Spain, Italy, France, CIS countries, India, China, Sri Lan-
ka and other countries; they also participate in the work of
different public professional organizations: International As-
sociation ofTeachers of Russian Language and Literature (MA-
PRYAL), Russian Society of Teachers of Russian Language and
Literature (ROPRYAL) etc.
It is worth mentioning the significant contribution that
Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia made to the estab-
lishment of the school of the Russian Language in Zvyozdny
Gorodok (Cosmonauts’ training centre) for teaching Russian
language to foreign astronauts. Programs of intensive studies
elaborated in PFUR allow to spend only 3 months preparing
candidates for learning technical disciplines related to space
inRussian.Languagespaceprogramisalsosuccessfullyimple-
mented by PFUR specialists among“space tourists”who have

6 months or 1 year to learn Russian in order to communicate
with space crew.
In 1967, the University established a faculty of Refresher
training for teachers of Russian as a foreign language (FRT-
TRF). The faculty organizes on a regular basis scientific and
methodological schools, courses, internships, distant network
schools, webinars, international round tables, conferences of
professors and managers of nurseries, educational institu-
tions, and international organizations in full-time and part-
time form. FRTTRF staff published 48 monographs, more than
250textbooks,referencebooks,dictionaries,methodicrecom-
mendations including electronic, and more than 1,600 scien-
tific and methodological articles many of which are featured
in SCOPUS and RSCI.
FRTTRF staff is the winner of such contests as“Leading sci-
entific and pedagogical staff of PFUR”(2010 – 2012), and has
diplomas of the International Fair“School of the year”, certifi-
cate of ETS Global Institute of USA, diplomas of International
Information forum“Eurasia Ring”etc.
Since 1999, PFUR has a Head Russian language testing cen-
ter for foreign citizens (HRLTCFFC) which is the main executive
organofStateSystemofTestingRussianasaForeignLanguage
established by the Ministry of Education of Russia. Today the
testingsystemisusedin160universitiesinRussiaandabroad.
In 2009, HRLTCFFC as part of the RussianTest Consortium suc-
cessfully passed the ALTE audit.
From 2010 to 2013, Head testing center tested 13,634 can-
didates for TORFL certificate, 29,887 candidates for the Rus-
sian citizenship Certificate and 5,753 candidates for work per-
mit Certificate in the territory of the Russian Federation. From
2009 to 2013, HRLTCFFC organized and conducted tests for
96,045candidatesforCertificateofstatetestingintheRussian
language in total.
Foreign languages at PFUR
Trainingofspecialistsindifferentsphereswhospeakforeign
languages and can work as translators and interpreters has al-
waysbeenoneofthetopprioritiesofPFUReducationalpolicy.
Professor N. Firsova, Doctor of Philological sciences, mem-
ber of the International Academy of Sciences of Higher School,
isconsideredtobetherightfulfounderoftheschoolofforeign
language and teaching translation at PFUR.
Today PFUR has 9 departments of foreign languages which
provide professionally-oriented teaching of foreign languages
in accordance with the basic specialty of students of faculties
and institutes.
Training specialists with higher linguistic education is car-
ried out by the Philological faculty and Institute of Foreign
Languages; master programs of training of linguists-transla-
tors also exist at the departments of foreign languages of the
Faculty of Economics and Institute of Law.
Teaching is provided by 285 professors of foreign languag-
es including 9 DSc, 107 PhD, 16 professors and 86 associate
teachers. 4 of them are incumbent members of public acad-

emies of science, 8 professors are Honorary Workers of High-
er Professional Education and Honorary teachers of the Rus-
sian Federation.
For the last 5 years the staff of the departments of foreign
languages prepared more than 2,875 scientific and method-
ological works including 20 textbooks and manuals with la-
bels, 56 monographs, 461 articles in journals, recommended
by HAC of the Russian Federation, 149 publications in foreign
scientific journals including 12 publications in foreign scientif-
ic journals featured inWoS/Scopus databases.
PFUR students study English, French, Spanish, German, Ital-
ian, Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, Persian, Latin languages in dif-
ferent programs of supplementary professional education.
StudentsoftheUniversitydefendthesesinforeignlanguag-
es according to their majors, participate in conferences and
publish articles in foreign languages, undergo internships in
foreign partner universities and organizations, get enrolled in
theprogramsofsupplementarylanguagetraining,participate
in international competitions and win them and obtain grants
for education abroad.
PFUR established 2 examination centers that work today.
During 2013, 284 PFUR students successfully passed interna-

PFUR pays special attention to the development of student
self-governing bodies, creation and support of various stu-
dent organizations, unions and communities. The major part
of the student organizations are fraternities of international
students, first of which started functioning straight after the
University’s foundation. In 1960, there was already a fraterni-
ty of Iraq students, in 1961- fraternities of students from In-
donesia, Jordan, Yemen, Cuba, Lebanon, Mexico, Sudan, Chile
and Japan.
In 1995, the first regional fraternity of international stu-
dents was founded- Federation of students from Latin Ameri-
caandtheCaribbean.In1996,PFURAssociationofAfricanstu-
dents (ASSAFTSU) was initiated. In 2001- Association of Arab
studentsatPFURandPFURAssociationofstudentsfromAsia–
Association‘Asia’.
In 1997, the first union (association) of students from re-
gions (constituents) of RF was established, i.e. Association of
students from Republic of Altai. In 1999 – the first fraterni-
ty of students from CIS countries started its work (Republic of
Kazakhstan).
Today there are more than 200 student organizations at
PFUR:

Physical culture has always been a priority sphere for devel-
opment at PFUR.
Physical-recreation centre PFUR was established in 1996.
Today the Department of Physical education and sport pro-
vides grounds for classes with total number of full-time stu-
dents of 7, 850 (408 hours for the whole period of education
at PFUR). Attending classes is compulsory for the 1st and 2nd
year students.

began its work in 1960-1961. First groups were formed: dance
group, vocal group, theatrical group, art studio, light music or-
chestra and pop bands.
Performance groups were formed in fraternities of foreign
students and according to the international principle. They
preserved national traditions and customs.

Today Interclub hosts 42 amateur student groups of 1,000
people in total (in 2010, there were 31 groups with 512 peo-
ple in total) that unite students from Asia, Africa, Latin Amer-
ica, Middle East, regions of Russia, countries of CIS and Baltic
countries.
Every year student groups of the University participate in
150 concert programs at venues of PFUR, Moscow, Russia and
foreign countries, take part in many student festivals and win
on a regular basis. For the last 5 years the total number of stu-
dents who won and received diplomas has exceeded 260 peo-
ple.
As a result of hard work of administration and heads of the
groups during the last few years the total number of all stu-
dent performance groups members has risen from 673 to
1,076 people (41%) and the number of foreign members has
reached 518 people which is 48% of a total number of mem-
bers.
The leading position among all performance groups of In-
terclub belongs to the International dancing group“Rhythms
of friendship”(Director – Honorary worker of Culture of the RF
Valentina Ryazanova). In 2011, this group celebrated its 40th
anniversary.Everyyearthegroupadmitsmorethan40people;
forallyearsofitsexistencethisinternationalgrouphastaught
dances of the peoples of the world to more than 1,700 people
who later brought their children to the dance group.

Construction teams
In summer 1964, students of Patrice Lumumba Peoples’
Friendship University from 18 different countries of Asia, Af-
rica and Latin America went to the virgin lands of Kazakhstan
for the first time in order to help in the construction of houses
andgranaries,aswellasinharvesting.Theynamedtheirinter-
national group“Youth of the Planet”.
ThefollowingsummerthePFUstudentsfrom25countriesof
Asia, Africa and Latin America worked there.
In1968,PFUfounded6universitygroupsthatworkedindif-
ferent parts of USSR and helped to build the new building of
the University in Moscow.
PFU International constructional team existed till 1990.
In 1999, upon the initiative of PFUR students, Rector and
tradeuniontheInternationalconstructionalteam“Meridianof
Friendship”resumed its work.
Starting from 2001, the International constructional team
“MeridianofFriendship”hasbeenworkingonanall-yearbasis
and has become a structural division of the University.
In 2008,“Meridian of Friendship”was re-organized and be-
came the Center of youth student building teams“Meridian of
Friendship”.
Starting from 2010, apart from student building teams an
agricultural team, IT team, service team and volunteer team
were formed.
For the last 5 years the total number of members of“Merid-
ian of Friendship” has reached 1,700 students from 79 coun-
tries.
Therearetwoeducationalprogramsforthemembersofstu-
dent building teams: School for training team leaders and Ba-
sicTraining. For the last 5 years 327 students have undergone
training in these schools.
“Meridian of Friendship”has repeatedly won at city conven-
tions of student building teams organized by the Department
ofCultureofMoscowinseveralcategories:“Beststudentteam”
and“Best student team of commissar’s work”.The PFUR Inter-
nationalconstructionalteamalsohasDiplomasoftheGovern-
ment of Moscow.
The staff received the highest award of Russian Student
Teams – a badge of honor for“Active work in student teams”.

StudentKVN(ClubfortheLightheadedandQuick-witted)
PFUR Club for the Lightheaded and Quick-witted, which
unites members from different subjects of the Russian Feder-
ation, as well as from foreign countries, is a perfect example
of bringing up culture of behavior in a multicultural environ-
ment.
KVNmovementinPFURstartedin1996.Decisiononholding
annual tournaments for PFUR KVN Championship was made
in 1999. For all years of its existence KVN has formed its sys-
tem with rules and traditions. The University has its own KVN
champions. The most outstanding KVN members were put
down in the Book of Honor of PFUR.
PFUR KVN team has more awards than any other club in the
InternationalKVNClub.ItistheonlyteamontheInternational
KVN Club that has all kinds of medals:

The most triumphal moment for PFUR KVN team was 2007
KVN Summer cup in Sochi when the team became the Cham-
pion of the Champions.
KVN teams from PFUR participated in International Music
Festivals inYurmala (Latvia) 10 times.They hold the record for
the highest number of awards of this prestigious Festival.The
first award“Big KiViN in Light”went to the team“Children of
Lumumba” (in 1998), then PFUR KVN team got two awards
“Big KiViN in Dark” (in 2002 and 2004), two awards “Small
KiViN in Gold”(in 2003 and 2005) and the highest prize of the
Festival“Big KiViN in Gold”(in 2006).
The whole collection of prizes of PFUR KVN teams features
Moscow Cup (won by the team “Children of Lumumba” in
1999), 5 awards of Interuniversity tournament of the South-
West Administrative District Prefect Cup (won by Senior KVN
team in 2001 and 2002, the KVN team RUDNiK in 2007 and
2008 and by Junior KVN team in 2012), the South Administra-
tive District Prefect Cup (won by KVN Second team), Moscow
MayorCup,uniqueCupsfromTyumen,Kazakhstan,theChech-
en Republic, Prague, as well as certificates, diplomas and let-
ters of gratitude.
PFUR KVN teams participated in various Leagues of Inter-
national KVN Union. Almost all PFUR teams have taken part
in the Moscow league, the First league held in Kazan, Ryazan,
Tyumen, St. Petersburg and Minsk, the Baltics league (Saint
Petersburg),theNorthernleague(Khanty-Mansyisk),theEuro
league (Minsk) where PFUR KVN team became a champion in
2002, the Central Ryazan league where the team “RUDNiK”
became vice-champion in 2007, the Higher Open Ukrainian

league, the Premier league where“RUDNiK”was a semifinalist
in2008,andtheHigherKVNleague(Moscow)wherethisteam
became a quarterfinalist in 2009.
In 2011, after 5 years of absence the PFUR KVN team re-
turned to the Music Festival in Yurmala dedicated to the 50th
anniversary of KVN and once again proved its right to call it-
self the best musical team by winning its second“Big KiViN in
Gold”.
The new wave of the KVN movement owes its existence to
theincumbentinternationalPFURKVNteam,winneroftheIn-
teruniversity tournament for the Cup of Prefect of South-West
administrative district (2012) and holder of the Cups of II and
IIIMoscowfestivalsofnationalhumor“Vsesvoyi”(“NoStrang-
ers”) in 2011 and 2012. After the season of 2012 in the Big
League of KVN“Povolzhie”(cities of Kazan, Ufa, Tolyatti, Che-
boksary) the team became third out of 36 teams who started
in the beginning.
In 2013, the Junior PFUR team with the support of the Se-
nior team brilliantly made its first appearance in “Dzintari”
concert hall inYurmala and won“Small KiViN in gold”award.
In December 2013, PFUR team participated in XXV Interna-
tional festival of KVN teams in Sochi and was invited to play in
the Big League of the International KVN Union which means
that the story of KVN in PFUR continues.

University Newspaper «Druzhba» (Friendship) is the official
publishing organ of the Peoples’Friendship University of Rus-
siathatrepresentsitsnumerousstaff:students,professorsand
employees.The first issue of the newspaper was published on
February 5, 1962. It was circulated among participants of the
solemnmeetingtomarkthePFUanniversarywhichtookplace
in the Kremlin Palace of Congresses in order to show them the
newly born newspaper.The publishing organ was founded by
theUniversityAcademicCouncilupontheinitiativeoffraterni-
ties and student organizations.
Today the newspaper circulation has reached 2,000, and
certain issues include 20 pages of A4 format. Announcements
andnewissuesinelectronicformatcanbefoundattheofficial
website of the University.
The newspaper is published in color and distributed free
of charge. In its pages the paper highlights the scientific and
business life in PFUR, international matters, events in PFUR
culture and sport life, students’problems, publishes materials
on healthy life.
The Publishing organ of «Druzhba» also issues a“Bulletin of
the complex safety of students and employees of PFUR”.
First-year students of the Philological faculty (majoring in
Journalism and Public Relations) have their year round train-

Research library was established in May 1960. January 1,
1967,thelibraryhad350,000units.AnnuallytheLibraryre-
ceived 50, 000 books and brochures, more than 1, 200 units
of Russian and foreign literature.The Library fund in foreign
languages consisted of 15, 000 units.
In December 1983, new building for fundamental library
was established with the territory of 7, 500 sq.m. Total ter-
ritory of the Library including all the University buildings is
over 9, 000 sq.m.The library fund included 1, 219, 500 units
in January, 1984.
In 1989, an experimental project of automated system‘Li-
brary 2’ (MSU) was launched, to be later followed by new
versions of the system. Since 1990, new materials arriving
at the library have been registered in the Electronic cata-
logue and the books that came before 1990 were also added
to the catalogue. ‘Automated system of loan’ was launched
and started working at the library in the Main building since
2002. In2006,theLibrarystartedworkingintheAutomated
information library system‘MARK-SQL’.
In2008,PFURResearchLibrarywasreorganizedintoStudy
and research information Librarian center (Research library).
The major task of the library is to provide resources for edu-
cation process and scientific and research activities.The Cen-
tre assistants carry out informational and educational and
cultural work.
Todaytotallibraryfundofprintedmaterialsisover1,800,000
units. Annually the Centre receives about 20, 000 units. The li-
braryfundisunique,itincludesprintedandelectronicversions
of unites in Russian and foreign languages. The total amount
of the fund is 90, 000 units in 70 languages.
In 2009, the website of the Library was launched http://lib.
rudn.ru, which became a unique platform to access the library
services and information content.
In 2011, a new Electronic-library was created using the
‘MegaPro’program which allows the librarians and library at-
tendants to use cloud technology and services. ELS is the first
ELS created by the University. ELS was officially registered as
the means of Mass media and data base which allows to get
access to the library resources from the Internet, search need-
ed materials and get access to the full versions of the books.
Today the ELS includes 5, 500 full text materials, over 380, 000
bibliography notes.
The Library is connected to 36 universal and professional
text and bibliographic databases for study and research.You
can also get information materials online.
September 1, 2011, presentation centre ‘Rare book’ was
opened. The collection consists of 3, 000 books of XVII-XXI c.
There you can find old books, limited editions, hand-writ-
ings, mini-books and many other rare books in different for-
eign languages in different fields of studies. Part of the col-
lection is presented in the electronic version and is already
accessible with ELS.
Since March, 6, 2012, a bilateral agreement between
Study and research information Librarian center (RESEARCH
LIBRARY) and Research Library MSU was signed, so both
PFUR students and academic team can use the funds of both
universities.

RFIDtechnologieshasbeenlaunchedatthelibrary.Electron-
ic version is available to the readers on the Internet. System

tioning in the library halls.
Library workers constantly give lectures and hold sem-
inars on the library database. They organize exhibitions of
contemporary authors and thematic exhibitions; create in-
formation materials within different fields of their activity.
PFUR library takes an active part in the life of the Univer-
sity. On November, 21, Russian literature meeting took place
with participation of the Russian President V.V.Putin. There
were various sections working, hosting contemporary writ-
ers, translators, publishers, producers, teachers and descen-
dants of Russian classic writers.
Research library is visited by official foreign delegations
and individuals, famous workers of art and education. PFUR
Libraryprovidesgreatinformationsupporttotheeducation-
al centres of different countries.

PFUR Publishing House
PPC of PFUR was formed in January 1997, on the basis of
Publishing and printing house of Peoples’Friendship University
of Russia.
Today PPH is one of the leading university publishing hous-
es, which annually prints out about 400 units with circulation
of 150, 000 copies.
According to the rating of the Russian university depart-
ments by the Russian Central Institute of Bibliography, PPH is:
 Ranked 5th
in the number of items to publish;
 Ranked 10th
in the total amount of printed works pub-
lished.
The authors publishing at PPH are leading PFUR professors,
teachers and researchers. Experienced editing team of PPH
allows to publish literature almost in all fields of studies.
Besides books, PPH also publishes 4 scientific journals: ‘PFUR
Vestnik’, ‘Contemporary mathematics’, ‘Construction mechanics
of engineering constructions’ and ‘Metaphysics’. The ‘PFUR
Vestnik’ is published in 21st thematic series. 20 of which are
included in the list of Russian cited scientific journals. Works
published in‘PFURVestnik’are counted when standing for PhD
thesis in order to receive the status of a PhD or Doctoral degree
holder.

In order to provide cooperation between the University and
the Alumni of Russian (Soviet) universities who are living in
different countries, there were 40 agreements signed with the
Alumni Associations of Soviet and Russian universities.
PFUR alumni are demanded everywhere and hold high po-
sitions in the world. Among them there are presidents and
prime-ministers, more than 50 officials of Ministries and gov-
ernmentagenciesin37countriesaroundtheworld.133alum-
ni work for Embassies of 47 countries.
In 2012, PFUR held IIIWorld Forum of Alumni of Soviet and
Russian universities where there were 1, 009 alumni coming
from 140 countries among which 687 foreigners. The alumni
represented more than 50 universities of Russia and the USSR.

PFUR alumni receive help at the PFUR Career Centre which
has the following functions:
To support the functioning of the web-portal ‘PFUR – in-

To arrange research on the employment needs of students
at all faculties;
To monitor labour market and potential employers;

As of today PFUR has a social infrastructure which allows pro-
fessors, staff and students to obtain all kinds of services:
healthserviceatclinic№25attheFacultyofrefreshertrain-
ing of medical staff (FRTMS), at PFUR Medical center;
 network of public catering establishments in academiс
buildings and campus;
 the facilities on campus include shops, dry cleaning, con-
sumer service enterprise, banks etc.
Such infrastructure allows professors, staff and students to
obtain these services directly in the academic buildings and in
the territory of the University.
PFURstaffandfacultyenjoysocialbenefitsandgetfreecon-
sultations from specialists of FRTMS and MC at clinic №25. In
case of emergency the University provides assistance in hospi-
talization to the clinics, where the faculties of the Institute of
Medicine are located.
PFUR Department of Social Development pays great atten-
tion to students. There are specialists who supervise students
ofdifferentsocialcategories:orphans,invalids,victimsofCher-
nobyl etc.
In 2014, more than 15 million rubles were allocated to the
assistance to orphan students.
In November 2000, the University established a kindergar-
ten №896 which works 247. 40 children aged 3-6 attend this
kindergarten.
The University also founded a children’s health camp “Yu-
venta”forchildrenofprofessorsandstaffwhichhasrepeatedly
won a review competition of children’s country camps of Mos-
cow organizations for the best educational work.
Besides, the University campus dorms provide children’s
rooms for students’children.
All students can make use of services and obtain transport
cards and pension insurance policies.
In 1997, in order to implement its social policy PFUR found-
ed a Department of Social Development which includes the
following divisions:
Sector of“Family, Motherhood and Childhood”
Sector of“Recreation and Health”
Sector of“Financial and welfare support for employees”
Sector of“Pension and health insurance”
The Social Insurance Fund is used to pay:
benefits for temporary incapacity for work
maternity benefits
allowance in early pregnancy
child birth benefits
monthly maternity-leave provision
In 2014, the sum of such social insurance benefits exceeded
28 million rubles.
According to the collective agreement children of the Uni-
versity staff can study in PFUR on concessional terms.
Special honor and respect are paid to the veterans.The Uni-
versity does its utmost to help these people. Attention is paid
even to those veterans who don’t work in the University any-
more.

February 5, 1960 Following the Resolution 130 of the
CPSU Central Committee and USSR Council of Ministers Peo-
ples’Friendship University was founded.
ObjectiveprerequisitesfortheestablishmentofthePeoples’
Friendship University developed at the turn of the 50s-60s.
Massive release of Asian, African and Latin American countries
from the colonial and semi-colonial dependence, a significant
increase in the number of students from these regions, geo-
political needs – these factors necessitated the establishment
of a higher education institution, which would not only train
highly qualified personnel for the countries that have taken
the path of independent development, but also develop the
best educational programs and work with foreign students.
The establishment of Peoples’Friendship University on the 5th
ofFebruary1960wasahistoricalnecessity.Inamatterofdays,
this news spread around the world.
February 21, 1960 During his official visit to Indonesia Ni-
kita Khrushchev , Chairman of the Council of Ministers, deliv-
ered a great speech at the National University of Indonesia
Gadjah Mada, in which he declared that the Soviet govern-
ment in its wish to assist countries in preparing their nation-
al personnel decided to establish the People’s Friendship Uni-
versity in Moscow.
March 17, 1960 Following Resolution 317 of the USSR
Council of Ministers Peoples’Friendship University was given a
number of buildings to arrange the faculties and organize the
educational process, as well as student dormitories: training
building of the Academy of the General Staff of the USSR Min-
istry of Defense (Ordzhonikidze street, 3), most of the barracks
at the Pavlov street, and a complex of buildings of the military
boarding school at the 3rd Cable street.

March 24, 1960 The rules of admission to the Universi-
ty and the Resolution of the USSR Council of Ministers on the
appointment of Sergei Rumyantsev as the rector of PFU were
published in the press.
October 1, 1960 Classes began at the preparatory depart-
ment of the University, which enrolled 589 students from 59
countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America and 57 Soviet stu-
dents.194professorsandstaffmembers,including4DScpro-
fessors and 26 PhD, associate professors, began to train spe-
cialists for the countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America.
October 1, 1960 PFU founded a Scientific library.

November 17, 1960 Column Hall of the House of Unions
held a grand opening ceremony of the University.
February 1961The University was named after Patrice Lu-
mumba—aCongolesepoliticalandsocialactivistandasym-
bol of the African peoples’fight for independence.
April 8, 1961 A decision on constructing a complex of
buildings for the University was made and appropriate in-
structions on the allocation of land for construction and de-
sign were given. The University was offered an extensive plot
ofland(70.5hectares)inthe42quarterofSouth-westerndis-
trict of Moscow.

ed Resolution 768“On the construction of Peoples’Friendship
University of Patrice Lumumba” which allowed the construc-
tion of academic and auxiliary facilities.
June 29, 1965 The Kremlin Palace of Congresses held the
first graduation ceremony of 228 specialists including 184
students from the countries of Africa, Asia and Latin Ameri-
ca. Chairman of the Council of Ministers A. Kosygin welcomed
the alumni, students and professors.The ceremony concluded
with a concert of amateur talent groups of students from the
countries of Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Soviet Union.
June25,1965ApressconferenceofSovietandforeigncor-
respondents with professors, teachers and the first graduates
of PFU was organized by the State Committee for Cultural Re-
lationswithForeignCountriesofUSSRCouncilofMinisters.The
participants of the conference pointed out the growing popu-
larity of the University.

April 9, 1966 The solemn laying of the first stone of the
new educational complex of Peoples’ Friendship Universi-
ty designed for 4,200 students and graduate in the 42 quar-
ter of South-western district of Moscow took place. The rec-
tor of PFU Rumyantsev laid under the foundation of the first
block a brass capsule with an Act of the start of construction
and a metal board with an inscription “On April 9, 1966 the
construction of the educational complex of Patrice Lumumba
Peoples` Friendship University started”.
June 1966 The first graduation ceremony of the Faculty of
Medicine was held. 93 foreign students from 35 countries and
10 Soviet students graduated, including Ahmed Taki Murad
from Sierra Leone, the owner of a student card № 001.
September 1966 The construction of a building for hu-
manitarian faculties started in Miklukho-Maklaya street.
December 1970Vladimir Stanis was elected PFU rector.

  • 3. PEOPLES’FRIENDSHIP UNIVERSITY OF RUSSIA 2 Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia was established by theDecreeoftheUSSRGovernmentonFebruary5th,1960and was named Peoples’Friendship University. In February, 1961 it was named after Patrice Lumumba and in 1992 it was turned into Peoples’Friendship University of Russia (PFUR). In February 1975, the University was granted an award of Peoples’Friendship for its contribution in preparing specialists from Asian, African and Latin American countries. Main peculiarity of our University lies in its multicultural character.Todaythereareabout28,000graduates,post-grad- uates and interns studying at PFUR.They represent more than 500 nations and nationalities from 152 countries from all around the world. The high quality of education provided at PFUR is displayed through the success of 90, 000 of our alumni who work in al- most all countries around the world. Among them are a num- ber of Presidents and Prime Ministers, hundreds of famous politicians and successful businessmen. WithinhalfacenturyofitshistoryPFURhasbecomeaworld- known university and gained popularity as a classical univer- sity which has been holding leading positions among the best Russian higher education institutions for many years growing rapidly up in the international rating lists. According to the World QS rating PFUR is in the list of Top- 500 world universities (there are only 10 Russian universities listed inTop-500 world universities). According to joint project by the ‘Interfax’ Informational Agency and the QSWorld University Rankings 2014, PFUR is in Top-100 universities of BRICS states, and 7th among the uni- versities of Russia, CIS and Baltic countries and 1st in the in- ternalization. The University is ranked 4-6th in the National University ranking 2011/2014 held by the‘Interfax’Informational Agen- cy and‘Echo of Moscow’. Peoples’Friendship University of Russia is a great scientific centre that is taking an active part in carrying out scientific re- search and experimental development projects within the pri- orityscientificareas.PFURhasoneofthelargestsystemsof30 dissertationcouncilsinRussiaintendedtoassessscientificand pedagogical qualifications, i.e. to grant diplomas in PhD and Doctoral degree. PFUR academic team consists of 500 doctorate degree hold- ers, over 1, 200 Phd holders. There are 57 academicians and corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and other state and public academies; 28 Honored Scientists ofRussia.26peoplearehonorarymembersoftheinternation- al academies and scientific communities. More than 500 em- ployees are inventors and rationalizers. Due to their outstanding contribution in science and edu- cation and the great input into the development of friendship between the nations, 26 outstanding people from Russia and other countries were awarded with PFUR Emeritus Professors. Among them are 2 monarchs, 8 presidents and 2 Prime-Min- isters. The University has established long-lasting and firm inter- national ties with universities as well as international organi- zations worldwide. PFUR is a member-university of Interna- tional Association of Universities (IUA), founder and member oftheEurasiaUniversityAssociation;NetworkUniversityofCIS member counties, the SCO University (Shanghai Cooperation Organization), participant of programs of the Association of Academic Cooperation, member of the Black Sea Universities’ Network (BSUN) and others. PFUR has signed more than 400 agreements of cooperation with foreign universities and sci- entific centres. PFUR is a leader among all Russian universities in the to- tal number of master’s programs in English (more than 30), as well as joint master’s programs offered in cooperation with leading world universities (more than 100) which gives stu- dents an opportunity to receive 2 diplomas at the same time: one of PFUR and another one of the university-partner. PFURprovidesalltherequiredconditionsforstudiesandlei- sure, including well-developed infrastructure. PFUR campus is one of the best in Russia which has been proved by a number of awards at annual contests for the Best campus and student hostels of universities of Moscow and Russia. PFURprovidescompletesecurity:alluniversitybuildingsare equipped with modern systems and automatic fire alarm in- cluding electronic access system and modern system of vid- eo surveillance to monitor the University territory with 2, 000 video cameras. Peoples’Friendship University of Russia takes special care of students,teachersandemployees’health:PFURhasapolyclin- ic, sanatorium and Medical service centre, more than 70 de- partments of medicine, a Complex Program‘Health’. Annually PFUR students and employees undergo a complete examina- tion. Healthcare is provided with the opportunity to stick to a healthy diet and do sports- there are more than 20 cafes and restaurants with exotic traditional dishes of different coun- tries, physical recreation centre with 45 departments and 40 kinds of sport. PEOPLES’FRIENDSHIP UNIVERSITY OF RUSSIA 6 In 1965, the first 288 young specialists from 47 countries of the world graduated from PFUR and in 1975 the University trained about 5,600 specialists including 4,250 graduates for 89 foreign countries. On September 14, 1960, following the order of Rector PFUR admitted the first international student which got the Student ID card №1. It was Ahmed Murad Taki from Sierra Leone. In 1966, he successfully graduated from the Faculty of Medicine and underwent a 1 year internship training. After returning to his motherland Ahmed Murad Taki worked as practitioner and headed a Medical college in Freetown for many years. The first foreign postgraduate who successfully defended the PhD thesis in 1968 was Kante Kabina from the Republic of Guinea who graduated from the Faculty of Science of PFUR in 1965. After returning to his motherland Kante Kabina worked asdirectoroftheNationalInstituteofScientificResearch,dean of the faculty in the University of Conakry and general director of Department of Bauxite. The first foreign PhD candidate who defended in 1977 his doctoral thesis for the degree of Doctor of Biological Sciences was Honmode Jayant Dattatraya from India who graduated from the Agrarian faculty of PFUR. At his motherland he headed the Department of Veterinary Medicine of the University located in Akola for many years. In 2006, PFUR awarded its 50,000th diploma. It was awarded to Jose Antiencia Villagomez (Ecuador), graduate fromtheFacultyofEngineeringwithmajorin“Automatization and Control”. As of today Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia has trained more than 90 thousand specialists from almost all countries of the world. In 2010/2011 academic year 2,024 students studied at Masters level, in 2011/2012 academic year their number rose to 2,342 students, in 2012/2013 academic year it reached 2,883 students. International students In 1960, 589 international students from 59 countries studiedintheUniversity.Thus,during55yearsoftheexistence oftheUniversitythenumberofforeignstudentshasincreased 10 times. Recentlytheincreaseinthenumberofinternationalstudents exists due to the students from CIS countries. Therefore, in 2014 their number at all the faculties and institutes reached 2,262 people. PFUR also admits students from far more countries now, including Asia-Pacific countries, United States and European countries. PEOPLES’FRIENDSHIP UNIVERSITY OF RUSSIA 8 Quality system of PFUR  iscertifiedinaccordancewithISOstandard9001:2008bya French agency AFNOR Certification in 2011;  the certificates were confirmed based on the results of a control audit by AFNOR Certification in 2012 and 2013;  receivedaRussianCertificateofQualityinaccordancewith GOST R ISO 9001:2008;  in December 2013, all higher education programs of PFUR received accreditation of Rospotrebnadzor until 2020. 24 educational programs of PFUR received international ac- creditation of European agencies. Based on the results of monitoring of the performance of federal educational institutions of higher professional educa- tioncarriedoutbytheMinistryofEducationandScienceofthe Russian Federation in 2013 PFUR was featured in the list of ef- ficient universities. Many things have changed in the University for the last few years: the number of faculties and specialties has increased, new multilevel structure of higher education (bachelor - master - PhD) has been introduced. Faculty of Russian language and general educational disciplines - 1 year Bachelor studies - 4 years Master studies - 2 years PhD studies - 3 years Starting from 2007-2008 academic year students of all faculties and specialties moved to a new system of training with the use of credit points, similar to the ECTS with the issuanceofasingleEuropeanDiplomaSupplementofhigher education in foreign languages. For all the disciplines and majors that are part of the system of credit points there is a point rating system which includes a multipoint system of credits and a methodology ofranking of students. Since 1996, PFUR has a quality management system for education. Following the Edict of the President of the Russian Federation of 12 March, 2012, PFUR obtains the right of developing and implementing its own standards of the main educational programs. WWW.RUDN.RU 9 Peoples’Friendship University of Russia has more than 150 laboratoriesandscientificcentersinwhichscientists,PhDcan- didates and students carry out research in all fields of basic and applied sciences. Thanks to the technical support of sci- entific laboratories there are 7,5 students per one laboratory space (comparing with 7,2 in 2010). Current laboratory devel- opment of teaching materials, electronic publications of study materials, laboratory ofTV and Radio service (TV PFUR) and a classroom(complexoflaboratories)ofconferenceinterpreting allow to implement many projects. The classroom of confer- ence interpretingactualized the need for a program of train- ing interpreters which is implemented at the Philological fac- ulty.Laboratoryofdevelopmentofmodernteachingmaterials and electronic publications and printing of modern teaching materials located at the publishing complex of PFUR allows to provide edition and printing of modern teaching materials and other printed materials of the University staff as well as of non-university authors. Modernizedscientificlaboratoriesprovidedevelopmentand expansionoftheresearchcapacityofPFURintoppriorityfields of science and technologies. High-tech equipment including unique allow to carry out not only R&D but also commercial research and to determine development of innovative educa- tional courses and programs for bachelor and master studies as well as programs of supplementary professional education. Technical support in educational process Joint Educational Programs with foreign universities International cooperation is an inherent part of the work of Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia as an internation- al university. It is also an important instrument of securing the quality of education and its compliance with internation- al standards. Elaborationofjointeducationalprogramswithforeignpart- ners universities is an important aspect of inter-university co- operation. Peoples’FriendshipUniversityofRussiaisaleaderamongall Russian universities in the field of joint educational programs with the leading universities of the world. The University has 114 programs of Double diploma education with European, Chinese and CIS universities, including:  77 programs with universities of CIS countries;  9 programs with Chinese universities;  27 programs with European universities;  1 program with a Canadian university. International impact of such pro- grams is reflected in the growing adaptation of PFUR gradu- ates to the global labor market. Thus, in 2014 the University has 31 master’s programs in English, French and Spanish for foreign and Russian students. Due to this fact the number of those who want to study in PFUR is steadily rising. In 2014, the total number of applications submitted to the University reached 30,099 which was 1.936 applications more than in 2013 (28,163) and 5,767 applications more than in 2012 (24,332). In 2014, admission of full-time students was carried out in 51 majors, with only 5 of them having contract spaces with payment of tuition fees.

PEOPLES’FRIENDSHIP UNIVERSITY OF RUSSIA 12 Preparatory courses of the Russian language for interna- tional students started their work in 1960, whereas other 6 faculties (Engineering, Historical and Philological, Medical, Agronomy, Faculty of Science, Economics and Law) started in September, 1st , 1961. In the 1990s, new faculties started functioning at PFUR (Ecological, Economics, Law, Philology, Humanities and social sciences, Upgrading skills for teachers of Russian as a foreign language, Upgrading skills for medical workers), as well as newinstitutesofForeignlanguages,Worldeconomyandbusi- ness, Distant education, Hospitality and tourism, Gravitation and Cosmology, new systems of pre-university education and continuing professional education were developed. In 2000, Chair of Policy in Higher Education with the status of UNESCO Department was initiated. In2011,Educationandresearchinstituteofcomparativeed- ucational policy started functioning at PFUR, and in 2013 the Institute of applied technical and economical expertise start- ed its work. In 2014, subject to the structural changes at PFUR, Faculties of Medicine and Law were reorganized into the Institutes of Medicine and Law. The academic and research team included 4 Doctoral degree hold- ers, professors and 26 PhD holders, associate professors. Tenyearslater,initsanniversaryyear(1970)PFURacademic team consisted of 864 people (84 Doctoral degree holders and 388 PhD holders). Today total number of PFUR employees has reached 5, 000 people with 2, 464 teachers (506 Doctoral degree holders, 1, 153 PhD holders), with potential and skills to provide quality training of specialists and carrying out scientific and research work in the outlined research frames. In October 1960, more than 100 pro- fessors of Russian language started to work in the University. The Department was divided into sections of Latin America, South-Eastern Asia, Middle East and Africa and study groups of international students were formed subject to their majors. Currently PFUR has 10 departments of Russian language which teach Russian to Russian and international students. Russian language is taught by about 300 professors in- cluding:  20 DSc;  136 PhD;  6 incumbent and corresponding members of state and public academies of sciences of Russia;  4honoraryworkersofhigherprofessionaleducationofthe Russian Federation. From 2010 to 2014, professors of the Russian language wrote 500 textbooks and manuals, including 104 with labels of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Feder- ationandnationalacademicassociations.Textbooksandman- uals developed at PFUR are widely used in Russian universi- ties as well as in foreign ones. For instance, the textbook by C. Khavronina and A. Shirochenskaya“Russian language in exer- cises”has been used for 50 years and published 70 times in 18 languages. PFUR specialists in Russian philology participate not only in academic but also in scientific activity as well. For the last 5 years they have prepared 2,500 publications, including:  450workspublishedinscientificjournalsfeaturedinHigh- er Attestation Commission register;  500 publications issued abroad;  45 monographs;  scientific articles devoted to the Russian language and methods of its teaching. Professors of the Russian language of PFUR maintain close scientifictieswithMoscowStateUniversity,RussianLanguage Institute of RAS, Institute of Linguistics of RAS, Pushkin State Russian Language Institute, specialists in Russian philology from Spain, Italy, France, CIS countries, India, China, Sri Lan- ka and other countries; they also participate in the work of different public professional organizations: International As- sociation ofTeachers of Russian Language and Literature (MA- PRYAL), Russian Society of Teachers of Russian Language and Literature (ROPRYAL) etc. It is worth mentioning the significant contribution that Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia made to the estab- lishment of the school of the Russian Language in Zvyozdny Gorodok (Cosmonauts’ training centre) for teaching Russian language to foreign astronauts. In 1967, the University established a faculty of Refresher training for teachers of Russian as a foreign language (FRT- TRF). The faculty organizes on a regular basis scientific and methodological schools, courses, internships, distant network schools, webinars, international round tables, conferences of professors and managers of nurseries, educational institu- tions, and international organizations in full-time and part- time form. FRTTRF staff published 48 monographs, more than 250textbooks,referencebooks,dictionaries,methodicrecom- mendations including electronic, and more than 1,600 scien- tific and methodological articles many of which are featured in SCOPUS and RSCI. Today the testingsystemisusedin160universitiesinRussiaandabroad. In 2009, HRLTCFFC as part of the RussianTest Consortium suc- cessfully passed the ALTE audit. From 2010 to 2013, Head testing center tested 13,634 can- didates for TORFL certificate, 29,887 candidates for the Rus- sian citizenship Certificate and 5,753 candidates for work per- mit Certificate in the territory of the Russian Federation. From 2009 to 2013, HRLTCFFC organized and conducted tests for 96,045candidatesforCertificateofstatetestingintheRussian language in total. Foreign languages at PFUR Trainingofspecialistsindifferentsphereswhospeakforeign languages and can work as translators and interpreters has al- waysbeenoneofthetopprioritiesofPFUReducationalpolicy. Firsova, Doctor of Philological sciences, mem- ber of the International Academy of Sciences of Higher School, isconsideredtobetherightfulfounderoftheschoolofforeign language and teaching translation at PFUR. Today PFUR has 9 departments of foreign languages which provide professionally-oriented teaching of foreign languages in accordance with the basic specialty of students of faculties and institutes. The major part of the student organizations are fraternities of international students, first of which started functioning straight after the University’s foundation. In 1960, there was already a fraterni- ty of Iraq students, in 1961- fraternities of students from In- donesia, Jordan, Yemen, Cuba, Lebanon, Mexico, Sudan, Chile and Japan. In 1995, the first regional fraternity of international stu- dents was founded- Federation of students from Latin Ameri- caandtheCaribbean.In1996,PFURAssociationofAfricanstu- dents (ASSAFTSU) was initiated. In 2001- Association of Arab studentsatPFURandPFURAssociationofstudentsfromAsia– Association‘Asia’. In 1997, the first union (association) of students from re- gions (constituents) of RF was established, i.e. Association of students from Republic of Altai. In 1999 – the first fraterni- ty of students from CIS countries started its work (Republic of Kazakhstan). Today there are more than 200 student organizations at PFUR:  PFUR Student Council (established in November 2001. Every year student groups of the University participate in 150 concert programs at venues of PFUR, Moscow, Russia and foreign countries, take part in many student festivals and win on a regular basis. For the last 5 years the total number of stu- dents who won and received diplomas has exceeded 260 peo- ple. As a result of hard work of administration and heads of the groups during the last few years the total number of all stu- dent performance groups members has risen from 673 to 1,076 people (41%) and the number of foreign members has reached 518 people which is 48% of a total number of mem- bers. The leading position among all performance groups of In- terclub belongs to the International dancing group“Rhythms of friendship”(Director – Honorary worker of Culture of the RF Valentina Ryazanova). In 2011, this group celebrated its 40th anniversary.Everyyearthegroupadmitsmorethan40people; forallyearsofitsexistencethisinternationalgrouphastaught dances of the peoples of the world to more than 1,700 people who later brought their children to the dance group. ThefollowingsummerthePFUstudentsfrom25countriesof Asia, Africa and Latin America worked there. In1968,PFUfounded6universitygroupsthatworkedindif- ferent parts of USSR and helped to build the new building of the University in Moscow. PFU International constructional team existed till 1990. In 1999, upon the initiative of PFUR students, Rector and tradeuniontheInternationalconstructionalteam“Meridianof Friendship”resumed its work. Starting from 2001, the International constructional team “MeridianofFriendship”hasbeenworkingonanall-yearbasis and has become a structural division of the University. In 2008,“Meridian of Friendship”was re-organized and be- came the Center of youth student building teams“Meridian of Friendship”. Starting from 2010, apart from student building teams an agricultural team, IT team, service team and volunteer team were formed. For the last 5 years the total number of members of“Merid- ian of Friendship” has reached 1,700 students from 79 coun- tries. Therearetwoeducationalprogramsforthemembersofstu- dent building teams: School for training team leaders and Ba- sicTraining. For the last 5 years 327 students have undergone training in these schools. “Meridian of Friendship”has repeatedly won at city conven- tions of student building teams organized by the Department ofCultureofMoscowinseveralcategories:“Beststudentteam” and“Best student team of commissar’s work”.The PFUR Inter- nationalconstructionalteamalsohasDiplomasoftheGovern- ment of Moscow. KVNmovementinPFURstartedin1996.Decisiononholding annual tournaments for PFUR KVN Championship was made in 1999. For all years of its existence KVN has formed its sys- tem with rules and traditions. The University has its own KVN champions. The most outstanding KVN members were put down in the Book of Honor of PFUR. PFUR KVN team has more awards than any other club in the InternationalKVNClub.ItistheonlyteamontheInternational KVN Club that has all kinds of medals: Bronze medal (2003) Silver medal (2004) Gold medal (2006) The most triumphal moment for PFUR KVN team was 2007 KVN Summer cup in Sochi when the team became the Cham- pion of the Champions. KVN teams from PFUR participated in International Music Festivals inYurmala (Latvia) 10 times.They hold the record for the highest number of awards of this prestigious Festival.The first award“Big KiViN in Light”went to the team“Children of Lumumba” (in 1998), then PFUR KVN team got two awards “Big KiViN in Dark” (in 2002 and 2004), two awards “Small KiViN in Gold”(in 2003 and 2005) and the highest prize of the Festival“Big KiViN in Gold”(in 2006). The whole collection of prizes of PFUR KVN teams features Moscow Cup (won by the team “Children of Lumumba” in 1999), 5 awards of Interuniversity tournament of the South- West Administrative District Prefect Cup (won by Senior KVN team in 2001 and 2002, the KVN team RUDNiK in 2007 and 2008 and by Junior KVN team in 2012), the South Administra- tive District Prefect Cup (won by KVN Second team), Moscow MayorCup,uniqueCupsfromTyumen,Kazakhstan,theChech- en Republic, Prague, as well as certificates, diplomas and let- ters of gratitude. PFUR KVN teams participated in various Leagues of Inter- national KVN Union. Almost all PFUR teams have taken part in the Moscow league, the First league held in Kazan, Ryazan, Tyumen, St. Petersburg and Minsk, the Baltics league (Saint Petersburg),theNorthernleague(Khanty-Mansyisk),theEuro league (Minsk) where PFUR KVN team became a champion in 2002, the Central Ryazan league where the team “RUDNiK” became vice-champion in 2007, the Higher Open Ukrainian

The new wave of the KVN movement owes its existence to theincumbentinternationalPFURKVNteam,winneroftheIn- teruniversity tournament for the Cup of Prefect of South-West administrative district (2012) and holder of the Cups of II and IIIMoscowfestivalsofnationalhumor“Vsesvoyi”(“NoStrang- ers”) in 2011 and 2012. After the season of 2012 in the Big League of KVN“Povolzhie”(cities of Kazan, Ufa, Tolyatti, Che- boksary) the team became third out of 36 teams who started in the beginning. In 2013, the Junior PFUR team with the support of the Se- nior team brilliantly made its first appearance in “Dzintari” concert hall inYurmala and won“Small KiViN in gold”award. In December 2013, PFUR team participated in XXV Interna- tional festival of KVN teams in Sochi and was invited to play in the Big League of the International KVN Union which means that the story of KVN in PFUR continues.

It was circulated among participants of the solemnmeetingtomarkthePFUanniversarywhichtookplace in the Kremlin Palace of Congresses in order to show them the newly born newspaper.The publishing organ was founded by theUniversityAcademicCouncilupontheinitiativeoffraterni- ties and student organizations. Today the newspaper circulation has reached 2,000, and certain issues include 20 pages of A4 format. Announcements andnewissuesinelectronicformatcanbefoundattheofficial website of the University. The newspaper is published in color and distributed free of charge. In its pages the paper highlights the scientific and business life in PFUR, international matters, events in PFUR culture and sport life, students’problems, publishes materials on healthy life. A number of events in accordance with the offered program is aimed at examining, curing, rehabilitating and preventing disorders of reproductive health state of PFUR students during the years of their studies. January 1, 1967,thelibraryhad350,000units.AnnuallytheLibraryre- ceived 50, 000 books and brochures, more than 1, 200 units of Russian and foreign literature.The Library fund in foreign languages consisted of 15, 000 units. In December 1983, new building for fundamental library was established with the territory of 7, 500 sq.m. Total ter- ritory of the Library including all the University buildings is over 9, 000 sq.m.The library fund included 1, 219, 500 units in January, 1984. In 1989, an experimental project of automated system‘Li- brary 2’ (MSU) was launched, to be later followed by new versions of the system. Since 1990, new materials arriving at the library have been registered in the Electronic cata- logue and the books that came before 1990 were also added to the catalogue. ‘Automated system of loan’ was launched and started working at the library in the Main building since 2002. In2006,theLibrarystartedworkingintheAutomated information library system‘MARK-SQL’. In2008,PFURResearchLibrarywasreorganizedintoStudy and research information Librarian center (Research library). The major task of the library is to provide resources for edu- cation process and scientific and research activities.The Cen- tre assistants carry out informational and educational and cultural work. Todaytotallibraryfundofprintedmaterialsisover1,800,000 units. Annually the Centre receives about 20, 000 units. The li- braryfundisunique,itincludesprintedandelectronicversions of unites in Russian and foreign languages. The total amount of the fund is 90, 000 units in 70 languages. In 2009, the website of the Library was launched http://lib. rudn.ru, which became a unique platform to access the library services and information content. In 2011, a new Electronic-library was created using the ‘MegaPro’program which allows the librarians and library at- tendants to use cloud technology and services. ELS is the first ELS created by the University. ELS was officially registered as the means of Mass media and data base which allows to get access to the library resources from the Internet, search need- ed materials and get access to the full versions of the books. Today the ELS includes 5, 500 full text materials, over 380, 000 bibliography notes. The Library is connected to 36 universal and professional text and bibliographic databases for study and research.You can also get information materials online. September 1, 2011, presentation centre ‘Rare book’ was opened. The collection consists of 3, 000 books of XVII-XXI c. There you can find old books, limited editions, hand-writ- ings, mini-books and many other rare books in different for- eign languages in different fields of studies. Part of the col- lection is presented in the electronic version and is already accessible with ELS. Today PPH is one of the leading university publishing hous- es, which annually prints out about 400 units with circulation of 150, 000 copies. According to the rating of the Russian university depart- ments by the Russian Central Institute of Bibliography, PPH is:  Ranked 5th in the number of items to publish;  Ranked 10th in the total amount of printed works pub- lished. The authors publishing at PPH are leading PFUR professors, teachers and researchers. Experienced editing team of PPH allows to publish literature almost in all fields of studies. Besides books, PPH also publishes 4 scientific journals: ‘PFUR Vestnik’, ‘Contemporary mathematics’, ‘Construction mechanics of engineering constructions’ and ‘Metaphysics’. PEOPLES’FRIENDSHIP UNIVERSITY OF RUSSIA 70 As of today PFUR has a social infrastructure which allows pro- fessors, staff and students to obtain all kinds of services: healthserviceatclinic№25attheFacultyofrefreshertrain- ing of medical staff (FRTMS), at PFUR Medical center;  network of public catering establishments in academiс buildings and campus;  the facilities on campus include shops, dry cleaning, con- sumer service enterprise, banks etc. Such infrastructure allows professors, staff and students to obtain these services directly in the academic buildings and in the territory of the University. PFURstaffandfacultyenjoysocialbenefitsandgetfreecon- sultations from specialists of FRTMS and MC at clinic №25. In case of emergency the University provides assistance in hospi- talization to the clinics, where the faculties of the Institute of Medicine are located. PFUR Department of Social Development pays great atten- tion to students. There are specialists who supervise students ofdifferentsocialcategories:orphans,invalids,victimsofCher- nobyl etc. In 2014, more than 15 million rubles were allocated to the assistance to orphan students. In November 2000, the University established a kindergar- ten №896 which works 247. 40 children aged 3-6 attend this kindergarten. The University also founded a children’s health camp “Yu- venta”forchildrenofprofessorsandstaffwhichhasrepeatedly won a review competition of children’s country camps of Mos- cow organizations for the best educational work. Besides, the University campus dorms provide children’s rooms for students’children. All students can make use of services and obtain transport cards and pension insurance policies. In 1997, in order to implement its social policy PFUR found- ed a Department of Social Development which includes the following divisions: Sector of“Family, Motherhood and Childhood” Sector of“Recreation and Health” Sector of“Financial and welfare support for employees” Sector of“Pension and health insurance” The Social Insurance Fund is used to pay: benefits for temporary incapacity for work maternity benefits allowance in early pregnancy child birth benefits monthly maternity-leave provision In 2014, the sum of such social insurance benefits exceeded 28 million rubles. According to the collective agreement children of the Uni- versity staff can study in PFUR on concessional terms. Special honor and respect are paid to the veterans.The Uni- versity does its utmost to help these people. Attention is paid even to those veterans who don’t work in the University any- more.

ObjectiveprerequisitesfortheestablishmentofthePeoples’ Friendship University developed at the turn of the 50s-60s. Massive release of Asian, African and Latin American countries from the colonial and semi-colonial dependence, a significant increase in the number of students from these regions, geo- political needs – these factors necessitated the establishment of a higher education institution, which would not only train highly qualified personnel for the countries that have taken the path of independent development, but also develop the best educational programs and work with foreign students. The establishment of Peoples’Friendship University on the 5th ofFebruary1960wasahistoricalnecessity.Inamatterofdays, this news spread around the world. February 21, 1960 During his official visit to Indonesia Ni- kita Khrushchev , Chairman of the Council of Ministers, deliv- ered a great speech at the National University of Indonesia Gadjah Mada, in which he declared that the Soviet govern- ment in its wish to assist countries in preparing their nation- al personnel decided to establish the People’s Friendship Uni- versity in Moscow. March 17, 1960 Following Resolution 317 of the USSR Council of Ministers Peoples’Friendship University was given a number of buildings to arrange the faculties and organize the educational process, as well as student dormitories: training building of the Academy of the General Staff of the USSR Min- istry of Defense (Ordzhonikidze street, 3), most of the barracks at the Pavlov street, and a complex of buildings of the military boarding school at the 3rd Cable street.
