1. Dear colleagues, dear friends,
Today we are celebrating the 56th Anniversary since the foundation of the
Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia!
As the previous year was not an easy one either for our country or for the
whole world, we have learnt to withstand difficulties and prioritize correctly.
Today, as never before, we need to remember the general principles, which
form the fundamental mission of the RUDN University: equality, friendship
and cooperation.
RUDN University academic and teaching staff’s professional skills and
enthusiasm, professional zest of the researchers, unlimited energy of students
serve the balks which help the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia strengthen its position
as one of the leading multi-profile education and research centres in Russia and abroad.
The hard experience of our predecessors, founders of the University, serves an inexhaustible
source of inspiration and encourages us to preserve and develop the traditions of our mentors.
Thousands of the University graduates hold senior positions and work in many countries all
around the world. They, therefore, confirm the prestige of the Russian education and promote
the fundamental principles of peace and cooperation.
We hope that the basic principle of friendship, implemented in the learning process at the
University, will bring fruitful results and allow to smooth things over in the world politics.

Friendship
RUDN University Birthday is a good reason to sum
up the previous year, as our Alma-mater is a peculiar
body, which consists of thousands of people, and a place,
where new ideas and concepts are constantly originated,
experiments carried out, projects implemented. As the
saying goes, hard work and eagerness are followed with
good results. So, we would like to consider achievements
of the RUDN University and the guests of the University
in 2015.
Home is best, but East or West are equally attractive!

Awarding the diploma of PFUR Doctor Honoris Causa
to the President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev in
the Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Сooperation between RUDN University and 17 Kazakh
universities was discussed at the ceremony. Mr. N.
Nazarbaev recalled his speech of September 18, 2015
delivered at General Debate of the 70th Session UN
General Assembly, when he emphasized the importance
of preventing international terrorism and religious
extremism and urged to hold an international conference
that would establish basic principles of international law.
Mr. N. Nazarbayev noted that it would be beneficial if
higher educational institutions could also contribute in
the discussion of these matters.

cooperation with RUDN University in the spheres of
education and scientific research. The priority areas of
cooperation are the joint Master degree programs and
programs in Russian and foreign language, academic
staff and student exchange programs including the
programs within the European program ‘Erasmus-plus’.
Considering the growing interest of the Greek in the
Russian language, the parties discussed perspectives of
teaching Russian. It’s important to note that Aristotle
University of Thessaloniki is holding the World
Conference, dedicated to the 2,400th Anniversary of
Aristotle. RUDN University was invited to take part in the
conference. Moreover, the meeting resulted in signing
a Cooperation Agreement and Work Program for 2015-
2017 within the frame of the Russian-Greek Bilateral

Opportunities of RUDN
Why RUDN UNIVERSITY?
Promoting, spread and supply of
space products to the mass consumers
are the major goals of the Russian
space industry today. Russia needs
to enter and develop its influence in
the world market and receive benefit
financially from the space industry
technology. This thought had been
expressed at the International Forum
‘Russian innovative technologies in
the world market’, which was hosted
by RUDN University in October 2015.
These goals were recognized
as primary and International
Marketing Centre is appointed
to take responsibility over
its implementation. Our
students come from all over
the world. The University is
acquainted with cultures and
traditions of various nations.
This knowledge helps to
develop successful business-
communication with foreign
partners. RUDN University is
an effective centre for training
highly-qualified specialists in
the spheres of international
economics and business. As
a proof, it shall be noted that most of
RUDN graduates hold high positions
in many countries, among them are
presidents and ministers, famous public
figures and successful businessmen.
Association of RUDN graduates and
friends can use its network and attract
people from different spheres and
countries to cooperate. ‘RUDN in
cooperation with Roscosmos and URSC
are searching for new ways to introduce
the latest civil purpose products
of the Russian aerospace industry.
Since the day it was founded, the
RUDN University has been training
specialists for many countries and
now we have an opportunity to
train experts, which would promote
Russian technologies’, said Vladimir
Mikhaylovich.
What is expecting RUDN, or a bit
about the plans
Of course, there is only an
agreement signed. But in order to
display the potential of the project,
there are some secrets that shall be
revealed. International Marketing
Centre would carry out systematic
research, aimed at revealing most
beneficial conditions for promoting
the aerospace industry products. For
instance, active and thorough research
of the Asian and African market,
territories, which can be ‘used’. In
other words, the centre will unite
analytical work, political realia and
human resources.
In the nearest future there will
be new departments established
and provided with all the modern
technology to carry out marketing
research and develop marketing
mechanisms to promote products and
services.
Moreover, RUDN is also planning
to hold a round-table on ‘Issues and
perspectives of promoting aerospace
products in the world market’. ‘It’s not
military and technical cooperation. It’s
cooperation in implementation and
use of space products in agriculture,
environment management and
farming sector management’, -
explained Y. Vlasov, the CEO of
the JSC ‘URSC’.
For that we agree to work hard!
The initial grounds are
established. There’s much work
to do. Including attracting
human resources to work for
the International Marketing
Centre. All the students have the
opportunity to contribute to the
work of the Centre. So here we go!
RUDN students have a new sphere to display their skills and abilities. In the nearest future RUDN
students will have a chance to participate in the work of the International marketing centre that would
promote highly-technological products in the world market, as following the agreement between the
RUDN University and JSC ‘United Rocket and Space Corporation’.

Generations of students change,
new forms of team work are
introduced, however, the RUDN
University traditions are preserved
and achievements are not forgotten.
Foundation and activities carried
out by the International student
construction teams are an important
stage in the history of the University.
At the beginning of the meeting,
Vladimir Mikhaylovich reminded the
words of the second UDN University
Rector V.F. Stanis, who always
attended meetings of the University
student construction team: ‘Dear
friends, you are the Golden Fund of
our University! We feel proud of you!’.
This time again all the brightest
representatives of the ‘Golden Fund’
of the 1960-1980s, the veterans of
the ISCT gathered together, old and
greying but big professionals with
great life experience.
It shall be noted that their
professional success was achieved due
to the skills, working and managing
experience obtained at RUDN during
the 3rd labour semester spent in the
International student construction
teams of Karelia, Siberia, Moscow,
Kazakhstan and many other regions
in Russia and abroad.
The book was created step by step.
It took several years to collect, Marina Andreeva
systemize and sort out data, photos,
diaries and other materials from
the members of the International
construction team of different years and
generations. This edition is the result of
big hard work carried out by hundreds
of construction team members.
One of the features of the book
is the photo section which includes
more than 1, 500 pictures. The book
is well furnished with the memories
of many RUDN international student
construction team veterans. ‘This work
resurrected the years when I was a
youth communist, when we were hard-
workers, cheerful and very supportive.
It feels like it brought me 40-50 years
back. We were all different, but one
thing united us, that is our aspiration
to do the work properly, put everything
together, preserve and forward to the
future generations the memory of one
of the most interesting stages in our
life, one of the brightest stages in the
history of the international student
construction team’, - remembered
Vladimir Mikhaylovich.
What he remembered was the
friendship, mutual respect and
fellowshipwithinabiguniversityfamily.
The present meeting with the veterans
well proves that it’s not just mere
words. Within half a century, thousands
of young soviet, Russian and foreign
students received international work
experience. This was the reason
that mainly determined the future
of our construction team members.
Members of our current international
construction team ‘Meridian of
friendship’ have to know the history
of this organization. The time has,
undoubtedly, changed the working
conditions, but one thing has left
unchanged – the new generation
preserves the traditions of their
fathers and grandfathers and work
hard to build up and develop their
University, Moscow and other
regions.
During the meeting, the
participants showed respect and held
a minute’s silence in memory of their
friends, colleagues and comrades
who didn’t make it until today. After
several veterans had delivered heart-
breaking speeches, the participants
of the meeting were offered to watch
a documentary ‘RUDN Construction
teams. Stages in history’, which was
made by the RUDN TV based on
the interviews of the members of
construction teams.
Time flies fast, veterans will be
replaced with a new generation of
students and teachers. Therefore,
it’s crucial to forward such a nice
tradition, so that the newcomers
wouldcomeandcontinueit,aslabour
nurturing is the most important
constituency in any international and
patriotic team.
The RUDN administration
awarded each veteran with a book
for them to keep the memory of
labour days in the International
student construction team. In the
name of all students of our Alma-
mater, we would like to express our
appreciation and gratitude to the
author and initiator of the current
project and all the people, who
participated and contributed in
publishing the two-volume book
of the history of the International
student construction team. We are
very grateful for the great work
done in preserving the memory of
the bright stages in the University
history.
RUDN held a meeting dedicated to the launch of the fundamental two-volume book ‘RUDN
International student construction teams. History and modern times’, which is dedicated to the 50th
Anniversary of RISCT. The project author and chief-editor is the Head of a research group in history
Vladimir Savin.

Anastasia Likhacheva
‘Music connected us...’
In December, the University welcomed the lovers of classical music. The University guests could visit the
Russian-Japaneseconcert‘Wecreatebeautytogether’,whichbecamethebeginningoffruitfulcooperation
‘Anykindofarthasatendencytoconnectpeople’,wroteL.
Tolstoy. His words remain valid even in today’s cruel world.
Culture and art cannot only overcome differences between
nations, but also unite representatives of different nations
in indestructible units. This is the idea behind the ‘MIN-
ON’ Concert association, initiated within the frame of the
‘MIN-ON Global Music Network’ Program and agreement
on academic, cultural and educational cooperation signed
between RUDN and University of Soka.
Art for the sake of a human
‘Our goal is to facilitate the art for the
sake of a human and the humanity,’ – this
is how the initiator and the founder of the
Min-On Concert Association, big friend of
MSU and RUDN, Daisaku Ikeda defined
the main idea behind the concerts he
organizes. He believes that joint concerts
do not only get young Japanese musicians
closer to his colleagues abroad, but also
serve a beneficial platform to strengthen
friendship ties between Russia and Japan.
Location
This year the concert was held on
three stages in Moscow on December
9-11. First, the Japanese musicians
demonstrated special program for the
Russian audience in the Small Hall of the
Moscow Conservatory; then, it was in the
Emperor’s Hall in the Lomonosov Moscow
State University. Finally, the third concert
took place in the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia.
The art and professional performance of foreign musicians
touched even the most experienced audience and critics.
Popular classical compositions were performed in modern
variations.
Opening
The concert was opened by the Merited Worker of the
Russian Federation, Dr. in Philology, Professor Galina
Trofimova. She performed a paraphrase on ‘Eugene Onegin’
at the concert.
New talents
Among the participants of the concerts were the
winners and laureates of the International Tchaikovsky
Competition. The Competition is held once in four
years beginning from 1958. This competition serves
a starting point for young talented musicians, gives
them a chance to receive the attention and love of the
audience and recognition of the world professional
society, as well as to start a successful international
career. For example, cello player Fedor Amosov
displayed his outstanding skills when he played
voluntary program, which was also one of his own
compositions. Talented violinist Ruslan Turuntaev,
who is also a laureate of the Competition, performed
Russian Dance from Tchaikovsky’s famous Nutcracker
Suite and sonata #3 (E. Isai) .
Image of Japan
Of course, the concert could not do without the national
colouring.
Tikudo Takahashi is one of the most popular musicians in
Japan. He can play the Japanese national musical instrument
called‘Tsugarushamisen’.Three-stringedmusicalinstrument
played by plucking has absolutely no similarities to any other
instrument, it is so peculiar. When hearing this instrument
play, one would imagine samurai and their world full of
chrysanthemum and green pheasant.
Undoubtedly, most fancied at the concert
were younger musicians Kanon Matsuda
(piano) and Seiya Ueno (flute). Despite
their young age, the performers have
already become laureates and winners of
a number of international competitions
and have released their albums recorded in
studios. Moreover, they are loved not only
in Japan, but all over the world. Kanon
performed four Preludes Op.10 for piano
C-sharp minor (Rachmaninoff, Sergei)
and Waltz in A-Flat Major (A. Scriabin).
Incredible talent along with the powerful
energy of the young performer created the
atmosphere of peace and harmony. Flute
player Seiya Ueno captured the audience
from the first sounds of the ‘Karmen’ and
held the audience in tension until the last
second.
RUDN postgraduate student Bris
Fuako was also given an opportunity to
display his program, which was the famous
Italian composition ‘Funiculi-Funicula’,
which became the highlight of the concert.
Unite for a goal
RUDN Vice-Rector for academic work Alexander
Yefremov summed up the results of the concert. In his speech,
Mr. Yefremov emphasized the importance of such events: ‘It
is the wonderful music, that we deliver to the people’s souls,
that unites us no matter what nation or race we belong to’.

‘Weakening of the RUB is good’
January 25, Russia celebrated Tatyana’s Day. Moslenta.ru correspondents interviewed RUDN
students and asked questions about their life in Moscow and learnt how to learn 5 languages, bring
up kids and play drums in the Kremlin.
Kalidu Guisse, Senegal, postgraduate student,
Philological Faculty
We have an agreement signed between our countries, so
annually 15 students from Senegal come to study in Russia. I
also joined this program because I did very well at school. When
I first arrived here from Dakar 8 years ago, it was difficult for
me: I didn’t speak the language, the climate is different, the
culture too. But, thanks God, I met nice people, who helped me
to adjust and solve all the issues. We have an organization here,
RUDN Campus Student Council, which helps those students,
who come here to study, and protects their rights against the
university administration. And it doesn’t matter what country
you come from, they help everyone.
I appreciate a lot how much the guys from the Council
helped me during my first year here, it’s a good thing to do. So
I decided to join them then, I helped them, and when the former
Chairman graduated from the University, I was appointed to
that position, and it’s been 4 years since I became Chairman of
the RUDN Campus Student Council. We hold negotiations with
the University administration, organize concerts, sport events,
there are so many things to do.
As I receive my scholarship from the government in euros,
the weakening of the ruble is good for me. I receive the same
scholarship, but more money in rubles. I study Russian at the
Philological Faculty. When I graduate, I’m planning to get back
home and work there, then back here again, to work in the
Embassy in Moscow. It’s my dream.
Triana-Romero, Columbia, 5th year student,
Psychological Department
My aunt and uncle studied in Moscow during the USSR.
And when I was a child and went to visit them, I always went
through the photo-album and imagined that I would come here
on my own, when I grew older. When I finished school, I sent my
application to receive a scholarship to study in Russia. I won a
scholarship, and here I am, I’ve been here for 5 years. My husband
and I live together in the RUDN hostel, he is Russian, we study
together. Our daughter Elizabeth is 3 years old.
When I first arrived here, to be honest, I was sad: I wasn’t
used to living without my mother, my father, and it was cold here
and the sky was grey, and there was little sun. But then I got used
to it. And most importantly, something turned out to be great.
Before I arrived here, I thought people were reserved in Moscow.
But it turned out to be the contrary. When I learnt the language
and started socializing with people, I found out that people here
are very warm-hearted. I got used to it, and I liked living here
so much that I decided to do my master’s degree here as well. I
always dreamt of opening a Charity Fund to help single-mothers.
Therefore, when I graduate from the University, I would like to
open such a Charity Fund in Columbia, Bogota, where my parents
are still living today. So my plan for the future is to help people.
Arsalakh Samim, Afghanistan,
2nd year Master student, International law
My father has long been living and working here in Moscow.
And when I finished school in Kabul, he offered me to move
here and study at RUDN, as the quality of education is much
better here. So I arrived here in September 2009. I received
a scholarship for 4 years and shifted to a fee-based tuition 18
months ago. According to my University agreement, I have to
pay the tuition fee in dollars. I work in Moscow, my father and
I have a shoe-department store, so I earn money in rubles, and
the fact that ruble has lost its value against dollar is not so good
for me, now I have to pay twice as much. But I can do nothing
– I went to ask if it was possible to change the contract and me

We have factories in my country, which produce aluminum.
And I signed an agreement with the RUSAL company and came
here to study, and after I graduate I will have to get back and
work in Guinea, according to the contract.
In Moscow, I presume, everything is ok. Before I arrived
here, everyone told me that there are many racists in Russia. But
it was the case in the 90s, and when I came here 4 years ago, I
realized that everything was ok. Ordinary people, they are really
cool. I am also an actor, I perform in ‘Afra drum show’, play the
dzhemba. There are 5 of us: 3 guys play the instruments and 2
girls dance. Our team is international, we come from Guinea,
Cote D’Ivoire, Congo and Benin. We have performed In many

of signing the new contract. They said: ‘No’. The rest is alright, I’m
very thankful to the teachers for their good treatment. The dean and
everyone at the Department are good to me. I only go to the hostel
to visit friends, I live in my own flat, I come to the RUDN to attend
classes and take exams. When I was coming here, they told me: ‘Don’t
leave your beard, shave it, as you might be attacked by the racists’.
They said many things: about hooligans, gangsters, and many other
negative stories. But what I like about Moscow is that I feel home. I
am not always on the territory of the university, I always travel around
Moscow. And there’s been no one who would look weird at me, or say
bad things. Here relationships between people are as follows: I respect
them, they respect me. I’m an international lawyer and I want to find
a job in Moscow and be a lawyer. I attend many interviews and every
time they ask the same question: ‘Are you a Russian citizen?’ And I’m
still the citizen of Afghanistan. Well, I don’t know yet what’s going to
happen when I graduate the university. Meanwhile, I’m trying to find
a job in the Embassy of Afghanistan in Russia.
Tsuy Yan, China, 1st year student,
Institute of World Economy and Business
I have been long in Moscow, since 2005. I’m used to Moscow and I
feel home here. I was born in Ural, but I’m a Chinese citizen. The thing is
that my parents are from China, but they met and got married in Perm,
where they used to work then. There I was born. I went to visit China
only in the summertime during my vacation. I have been into volley-ball
since school years, I played for the team ‘Uralochka’ in Yekaterinburg
and I moved to Moscow to keep on with my training, I was accepted
to the school of Olympic reserve. I was in a Moscow united team,
participated in the Russian national team, and now I play for RUDN. I
have my classes in the morning and training in the evening after 6 p.m.
Training takes place in the RUDN Physical Recreation (Sport) complex.
Now I study world economy. Plans for the future… of course, they are
bright and positive. I might stay in Russia for longer, I’ve just started
my 1st year at university, I need to look around and understand what
kind of company I would like to work in, what I want to specialize in.
Now I’m taking a course in foreign languages, in ‘Translation’, I’m
learning 5 languages: Russian, Chinese, French, Spanish and English.
I hope that when I start working, it will be my asset, my support. As I

Friendship
when Bo knocked to Oleg’s room and
asked very politely to have a cigarette.
Being turned down, but not offended,
Bo went back to his room. Bo couldn’t
bear another 5 min, so he went back to
Oleg’s room and started begging him
for a cigarette again. Oleg refused him
politely for the second time. The third
time the pack of cigarettes was thrown
into Bo’s head. This shocked Bo and he
gave up smoking.
The theory failure
Meanwhile, life went on in its usual
way. Only two students didn’t study-
soviet Oleg and Bo from Cameroon,
as they had their own way of studying.
Disso was observing the two guys and
worried a lot that they would fail the
exams. But Bo was self-confident as
he received some pieces of advice from
Oleg.
Five days before the session started,
Bo and Oleg went to the library and
grabbed the required materials. Each
went into his own room to start the
racing and this is when the time changes
its shape: there’s never enough time for
the rest, for the food and you always
want to have more hours within a day.
After only one day, Bo started losing
himself. Having lost the feeling of time,
he started being late to the canteen. He
was starving, was constantly exhausted,
nervous as he was feeling more and
more under pressure. And here came a
sensation- for the first time in his life Bo
failed an exam. The experiment ended
Welcome, our foreigners
Disso, student of the Engineering
faculty from Sri Lanka, was bending
over the drawing-board and making last
corrections to his course paper, when
his neighbor from Cameroon, called Bo,
entered the room. Bo was a goal-oriented
young man, the winner of the competitions
among foreign students. That day he was
wearing a grey hat with a tie tied to the
latest fashion. With the suit bought in
Paris, which outlined his figure, and with
a bit slitted eyes he made an impression of
a smart man.
-That’s it, I stop studying, - said he
irritatingly to his neighbor. And then he
threw his bag on his bed. This news struck
Disso, as Bo was an A-student, a role model
for everyone.
- Are you crazy?
Disso paused, trying to guess, what
might have caused such a spontaneous
decision.
- You might have failed an exam?
- No, I am excellent,- said Bo climbing
on the bed.
-Then what’s up? - said Disso surprised.
- Imagine, Oleg, a Soviet student who
is living in the room in front of us, has also
received an A-grade.
-Why are you being jealous? That’s not
good. He is your friend.
-Of course, he is my friend. - Bo spread
himself on the bed and shifted into a more
comfortable position - but it’s not fair. He
doesn’t study, he doesn’t attend lectures.
He only attended the very first lecture and
that’s it. But then he goes to the library,
takes the book that the professor uses,
and that’s it. If he doesn’t find the book he
needs in the university library, he will do
whatever it takes to get it. I stocked him. –
Then he raised himself upon the elbow and
pointed his finger up.- And he does nothing
during the whole semester except learning
languages, in the end- here you are, he gets
an A-grade. Do you think that’s fair?

sideburns like the ones that Pushkin used to
Soviet system of education
It’s nice when people remember about RUDN and even send their works of art to the University.
RUDN Newspaper editorial board publishes satirical stories written by students from the
Engineering faculty in 1984, Alevset Alimuradov. We tried to find as many images to his story as
possible.

have, moved away from the drawing-board.
- You are smarty. You joined the
Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia
after studying in Sorbonne, in Paris. What’s
up? Try and do like Oleg does.
Bo signed heavily. He had to take a
decision.
And? – kept on Disso, - Dare you?
- I do, - said Bo with a firm voice. – You’ll
see what I’m going to do the next semester.
– To look more decisive, he stood up and
shook Disso’s hand. – I’m not sure as we
followed different systems of education, he
had soviet, I did - the western.
The beginning of the experiment
Holidays passed by very fast, another
academic term started. Bo stopped studying
systematically. Not knowing what to do in
his free time, he started taking classes of
chess from Oleg. He became fond of chess
very quickly and one could very often see
him with the chess board in the University
halls. He was happy like a child when he
managed to win and he got very upset
when he would lose. Bo’s next hobby was
playing lottery. Ignasio, a student from
the Dominican Republic, Oleg’s roommate,
started playing lottery since the very first
day of his studies in Moscow, although he
never won. When Bo, a mathematician,
joined him, they started developing
mathematic models to the game based on
the theory of probability. Once they even
succeeded- they won a big sum of money.
The emotions were taking over, they got
sucked in the game. However, soon their
luck started betraying him: either it was
because the theory of probability betrayed
them or their tricks had been revealed. And
once they separated for a month being left
without any means for living, as they had
risked and lost the money they had received
from the scholarship. Somehow with Oleg’s
scholarship they managed to survive. Being
down, Bo started smoking and very soon
got addicted. He started coughing. Doctor
prohibited him smoking, but Bo was so
much addicted that he could not give it up.
Then Bo came up with a cunning plan,
he gave his cigarettes to Oleg and asked
Oleg not to give them back to him despite
any pledges. But it wasn’t even 10 min Continuation on Page 11

Temple of history
Museum, it’s a word full of unsolved mysteries of
the humanity and of what existed long before the
civilization. Museum keeps the memory of the past
and encourages people to move forward to the new
and unknown. And, finally, museum is a temple of
history, temple of knowledge and thought.
with complete failure. Everyone worried a lot about Bo.
At diplomats from Cameroon
The Embassy of Cameroon asked Bo to explain himself.
- I don’t know why that happened, - Bo was trying to explain
himself, - I carried out an experiment and understood that our
system of education teaches and the soviet system of education
trains.
- What do you mean? – the representative of the Embassy
couldn’t understand Bo.
Bo made a pause to collect his thoughts.
- You know that soviet students, when training for an exam,
can remember great amount of information and then they
forget it if they
don’t need it at
all. For example,
my group-mate
O l e g , w h e n
he is taking an
exam, he knows
everything. But
t h e m o m e n t
he leaves the
room, he forgets
everything. It’s
like a recorder:
if he wants- he
records, when he
doesn’t – he deletes. In my understanding, such a phenomenon
is called a well-trained brain.
- What’s the point of learning something if you forget it
later? – the diplomat asked puzzled.
- The thing is that Oleg studies at the Engineering faculty,
but he doesn’t want to work as an engineer. He wants to become
a translator.
- Why?
- Because they have lots of engineers and those have a very
low salary. Whereas translators earn a lot.
- Ok, all is clear with Oleg, - said the diplomat, - but what to
do with our fellows?
And Bo looked into the diplomat’s eyes and said:
- We need to study in a Soviet school.
Since then Bo stopped experimenting with his destiny and
followed his learning style, and successfully graduated from
the Peoples’ Friendship University and proceeded with his
post-graduate studies. Bo always remembers his adventures as
a childish attempt to interfere into ‘someone else’s business’.
What about Oleg
Many years have passed. A group of foreigners carried out
a research on the level of education In Russian villages. The
results were shocking: they couldn’t find almost anyone who
would master a foreign language there. The group was almost
about to get back to the city when they suddenly met a man in
gumboots and work clothes. It was Oleg. He was pushing an
overloaded truck and he looked very exhausted.
- I’m sorry, - hopelessly asked one of the group members
looking down at Oleg through his glasses. - Do you speak
English? - the answer struck the man.
Oleg full of pride answered in perfect English:
– Yes, I do. I also speak Spanish and Arabic.
– It’s unbelievable! - Exclaimed the foreigner. - An…
But Oleg didn’t allow him to finish the question, easily
guessing what was to come. He answered in a low and sad voice:
‘No one needs anyone and no one needs anything’
He turned around and kept on pushing his truck along the
unpaved road, which was running from the barn to the dump
in the end of the village.
There are thousands of temples all around the world, each of which
is valuable for the humanity, be it the State Historical museum in
Moscow, or historical museum in the Peoples’ Friendship University
of Russia. RUDN students had a great opportunity to learn more
about the history of our University having visited the RUDN Museum
on November 11, during the history class given by prof. Vladimir
Kozmenko. The students were welcomed by the Director of the Museum
Vladimir Velichkin, RUDN graduate, who knows the history of his
Alma-mater perfectly well. So he told students that the Museum of
the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia was founded in 1993,
and was initially called the ‘Museum of peoples’ cultures’. As the
university was developing and more historical data was collected, it
was decided to create a ‘Museum of the RUDN history’. The idea was
realized in September 12, 2010, with the help of the RUDN Rector V.M.
Filippov. The Museum is located in the building of the Faculty of the
Russian language and general disciplines. There one can find not only
the souvenirs given to the RUDN by honored guests from different
countries, but also cups and medals received by students and student
bodies in different competitions. There are also photo expositions
placed in the RUDN Main building. Among a great number of artefacts
visitors can find various particles which reflect customs and traditions
of those countries, for example, flags, emblems, hymns, pieces of art,
cutlery, household appliances, scripts written in different languages and
many other things. Pictures that reflect student life are also exhibited
in the Museum. In conclusion, I would like to give a call to everyone to
visit the museum, develop and learn more about the history, culture,
customs and traditions of not only the world states and countries but
also of the educational institution where you study. Then and only then
your life will become much more interesting and fulfilling.

We are the future!
More attention is being paid to the issues of traffic and transport on the roads in Moscow. The best example
is the case of Lubyanka Square: now it has a status of a multi-level junction, but many Moscow citizens
want to make it available for the public use again. The changes in the Square raised mixed feelings among
the Moscow citizens. The Moscow government took the public opinion into consideration and announced
a tender for the best Square design project. RUDN student Idris Suliman won in the competition among
students-architects, winning the hearts of the jury with the elegance and simplicity of his design project.
Make a way for the young architects
Lubyanka Square has always been one of the most favorite places
of the citizens. In the XIX c. it was decorated with a bronze fountain
where the citizens could get drinking water. In the middle of the XX c. it
was replaced with a statue of Felix Dzerzhinsky. In 1991, the monument
was taken away and since then the place is left unfinished. In order to
solve this issue the Moscow government decided to announce a contest
among students, young architects, for the best Lubyanka Square design
project. There were more than 30 projects participating in the contest,
10 out of which were chosen to be considered in the 2nd round. The
top 3 projects were selected, Idris Sulimanov’s project was recognized
to be the best one. It was him who managed to find the issue and work
out the most optimal design solution.
Not just mere‘concrete blocks’
Idris Sulimanov arrived in Moscow 3 years ago. He applied to study
at RUDN and was offered free tuition education in the University. So he
decided to move to Moscow from his home country Syria and try to start
a new life away from the war. Initially, he was considering to become
an economist, but the profession of an architect grew over him more
and more. Soon he understood that he was really keen on architecture
and this field of studies would allow him to open up his potential. ‘Most
of all I like creativity in my specialty. I can create something that will
help people to live a better and more comfortable life, unite them and
facilitate their movements. I believe that architecture is not just mere
concrete blocks, but philosophical approach in the profession of an
Person
architect’.
Unexpected victory
It was Andrey Tukanov, professor of Idris, who told him about
the contest. The student immediately agreed to participate in it as
he wanted to try himself. ‘I found it to be an interesting experience
to participate in the contest. I have long known about the issue of
the Lubyanka Square and, I believe that the solution to this issue
was very obvious’.
The young architect had been developing the concept of his design
project for 3 weeks. Meanwhile, he was preparing for his exams at
the university, which considerably slowed down the process of the
concept development. One cannot say with full confidence that he
believed in the success of his project. Idris hoped to receive one of
the top places for it, but he didn’t anyhow expect that the jury would
so highly appreciate his project. The finalists of the contest presented
their projects in the Central House of Architecture. After the juries
announced the list of three finalists, Idris couldn’t believe it at all
that it was his project that was recognized as the best.
Beauty in minimalism
The young architect carried out his project in the minimal style.
The student was inspired by the ‘Black square’ of Malevich and, in
general, the art of the Suprematism art movement. Idris wanted to
move away from the historical parallels and the previous fountain on
the Square, but create an absolutely modern area. According to the
project, the Square is to be decorated with a 25-metre quadrangular
fountain made of glass that will be lit up from inside with laser lights.
The water from the fountain will go into a special pool. Under the
stele there will be cultural and entertainment areas for the citizens,
such as museum, cafés and supermarkets.
Check it out by yourself
Despite the decision of the jury, the final decision was taken
by the citizens. Three best projects were presented on the website
zafontan.ru, where the citizens could learn more about the projects.
The voting lasted until January 15, and now we are waiting for the
results. We believe in the victory of the student of our University.
