Beyond Bond Activity 1b: Skills Audit. June 2014
Personal Skills Audit Activity
Employability Skills : Employability skills are the essential skills sought after by employers in addition to your
academic learning. These are developed through a variety of activities and experiences.
Learning objective: To assess my current level of attainment of each employability skill identified in the
Beyond Bond Activity Framework.
Activity Purpose: The Beyond Bond Activity Framework provides a wide variety of activities across the four
categories of work-based, work-related, community-based and career-exploration. Undertaking a skills
audit will assist you to focus your selection of activities and your reflections based on the skills gaps or
weaknesses you identify. It is envisaged that you will update this audit as you progress through Beyond
Bond.
Task:
Step 1: Using the scale below, rank yourself for the first employability skill.
Step 2: Then provide some brief supporting comments as to why you feel you are at that level.
Step 3: Repeat steps 1 and 2 for the rest of the employability skills.
Step 4: Once you have completed steps 1-3, highlight any skills gaps or weaknesses.
Note: In order to obtain the 10 Beyond Bond points offered for this and the previous workshop, you must
upload your CV AND your completed Personal Skills Audit to the ILearn site by the end of week 14.
Scale: 0 = no development of this skill; 1 = very minimal development of this skill; 2 = minimal development
of this skill; 3 = good development of this skill; 4 = very good development of this skill; 5 = exceptional
development of this skill

People
1 Communication –
oral/written
The ability to communicate
orally, with a level of clarity
and formality appropriate to
the context
The ability to express ideas
clearly and correctly in
written form to the style
required of the occasion.
3 Oral communication is still in
need of improvement due
to nervousness. The greater
the crowd, the harder it is to
remember necessary
information for the public.
Written communication still
needs improvement, but
not to the extent of oral
communication, because
there is more time to
processes thoughts and
present important
information and leave out
unnecessary information.
2 Teamwork The ability to work with others
to achieve a collective goal,
ensuring clear responsibilities
and tasks, and the ability to
perform different roles to
adapt to the needs of the
group.
4 Most lab work requires
good team cooperation to
make best use of the
limited time we have in the
laboratory.
3 Leadership The ability to motivate,
encourage, energise, take
responsibility and support
3 Taking the lead role in
group projects is still in need
of development. Though,

enjoy encouraging and

to keep the motivation high

Self
4 Self-management The ability to set personal
goals and work steadily
towards them and organise,
prioritise and plan activities so
as to work at optimal
capacity and achieve a
desirable work/life balance.
Embracing a life-long
learning approach to skills
development.
4 The bachelor of biomedical
sciences requires an
individual to write lab
reports for different
subjects/classes and study
for mid semester and final
exams. There have been
semesters where lab reports
were due each week for 4
weeks prior to an exam.
Thinking
5 Critical thinking The ability to identify and
think through issues from all
aspects, evaluate and
formulate a logical
framework to present a
reasoned case.
4 I feel I have a high ranking
in critical thinking because
of the skills needed to do
well in biomedical sciences.
Thinking through problems
and coming up with a
logical explanation is
required in experiments as
science is more objective
than subjective.
6 Planning/
organising
The ability to organise,
prioritise and plan activities
and events such that they
proceed at optimal capacity
and efficiency and
contribute to short term
and/or long term strategic
planning.
4 Self-management is closely
related to planning and
organising, as both skills
require optimal
management of time.
7 Information
management
The ability to know where
and how to retrieve (using
diverse technologies),
evaluate and organise
appropriate information to
address or apply to a
problem or issue.
4 The use of Bond Library
electronic resources, to find
peer reviewed journal
articles and textbooks for
evidence, in order to back
up claims when writing lab
reports.
Approach
8 Initiative/
enterprise
Acting before being
prompted or taking a fresh
approach with energy and
enthusiasm to pursue a
project through being
creative and innovative.
3 Still in development, but lab
work require some amount
independence and
initiative.
9 Global
perspective
Adopting an approach to
issues which takes account of
cross-cultural and global

throughout my life.
10 Ethical thought &
action
Taking a responsible
approach which focuses on
integrity and ethical, moral
and cultural values and
standards.
4 As an undergraduate of

learned that ethics are very
important when planning
and performing an
experiment. Additionally
the morals and standards I
have been brought up with
focuses on helping to
improve the well being of
others.
11 Sustainability Demonstrating a
commitment to development
that meets the needs of the

compromising the ability of
future generations to meet
their own needs.
2 Was a member in a marine
conservation club during
