Job satisfaction is defined as “the extent to
  which people like (satisfaction) or dislike
         (dissatisfaction) their jobs.”

Job satisfaction is an emotional response to a
   job situation. As such it cannot be seen,
            it can only be inferred..

Dimension           Examples

Empowerment         *Involvement in decisions, information from management.

Job fulfillment     *Sense of personal accomplishment , good skills and abilities.

Payment             *Pay relative to others, pay for type of job.

Work group          *Quality of work done by group, co-operation among people.

Security            *Good job security, good total benefits programs.

Work facilitation   *Company efforts to make competitive changes, conditions
                    for employees to be productive.
Building Job Satisfaction
   The first step in the search for job satisfaction is
    to know yourself. If you're to be happy and
    successful, you need to understand your
    strengths and weaknesses.
   Even if the job itself is not all that challenging,
    you can make it challenging. Some great ideas
    here include:
     Set performance standards for yourself
     Ask for new responsibilities
     Teach others your skills
     Commit to professional development
     Start or take on a project that uses skills you would
      like to use, or want to improve.
   Closely related to the need for challenge is the need
    to minimize boredom. Boredom is a common culprit
    when it comes to job dissatisfaction. Some common
    methods to alleviate boredom at work include:
   Cross train and learn new skills.
   Ask to be moved to a new assignment or department
    requiring the same skills.
   Ask to work a different shift.
   Attitude plays a huge role in how you
    perceive your job and your life in general. If
    you are depressed, angry or frustrated,
    you're much less likely to be satisfied with
    anything.
   Keep a list of your accomplishments.
   Update your resume on a regular basis.
   Keep up to date on employment trends.
   Research other jobs that interest you.
   You need to keep your life and work in
    balance. When you focus too much on one at
    the expense of the other you risk putting your
    whole system in distress. When work takes
    over your life, it is easy to resent it and lose
    your sense of perspective: Suddenly everything
    about your life is clouded with negativity.
Productivity
 Productivity is a measure of the efficiency of
  production.
 Productivity is a ratio of what is produced to
  what is required to produce it.
Absenteeism
 Absenteeism is a habitual pattern of absence
  from a duty or obligation
 It has been viewed as an indicator of poor
  individual performance
Turnover
 The ratio of the number of workers that had to
  be replaced in a given time period to the
  average number of workers
 High turnover may be harmful to a company's
  productivity

     Organizations take actions to retain high performers
      and to weed out lower performers.

organization, etc.
     Interpersonal - respect, fairness,
      honesty,
healthy communications, cooperation,
friendly
     Environmental - safe, clean,
      accessible,
pleasing to senses
     Procedural - meaningful
      processes, efficiency
and effectiveness, hassle free
     Tangible - accurate and timely
      information,
things, adequate resources, food, water,
etc.
     Financial - salary and benefits
How Satisfied Are People in Their Jobs?
 In general, people are satisfied with their jobs.
  Depends on facets of satisfaction—tend to be
     less satisfied with pay and promotion
                  opportunities.

  • 6. Dimension Examples Empowerment *Involvement in decisions, information from management. Job fulfillment *Sense of personal accomplishment , good skills and abilities. Payment *Pay relative to others, pay for type of job. Work group *Quality of work done by group, co-operation among people. Security *Good job security, good total benefits programs. Work facilitation *Company efforts to make competitive changes, conditions for employees to be productive.
  • 8. The first step in the search for job satisfaction is to know yourself. If you're to be happy and successful, you need to understand your strengths and weaknesses.
  • 9. Even if the job itself is not all that challenging, you can make it challenging. Some great ideas here include:  Set performance standards for yourself  Ask for new responsibilities  Teach others your skills  Commit to professional development  Start or take on a project that uses skills you would like to use, or want to improve.
  • 10. Closely related to the need for challenge is the need to minimize boredom. Boredom is a common culprit when it comes to job dissatisfaction. Some common methods to alleviate boredom at work include:  Cross train and learn new skills.  Ask to be moved to a new assignment or department requiring the same skills.  Ask to work a different shift.
  • 11. Attitude plays a huge role in how you perceive your job and your life in general. If you are depressed, angry or frustrated, you're much less likely to be satisfied with anything.
  • 12. Keep a list of your accomplishments.  Update your resume on a regular basis.  Keep up to date on employment trends.  Research other jobs that interest you.
  • 13. You need to keep your life and work in balance. When you focus too much on one at the expense of the other you risk putting your whole system in distress. When work takes over your life, it is easy to resent it and lose your sense of perspective: Suddenly everything about your life is clouded with negativity.
  • 14. Productivity  Productivity is a measure of the efficiency of production.  Productivity is a ratio of what is produced to what is required to produce it. Absenteeism  Absenteeism is a habitual pattern of absence from a duty or obligation  It has been viewed as an indicator of poor individual performance
  • 15. Turnover  The ratio of the number of workers that had to be replaced in a given time period to the average number of workers  High turnover may be harmful to a company's productivity

Satisfaction and Productivity  Satisfied workers are more productive AND more productive workers are more satisfied!  Worker productivity is higher in organizations with more satisfied workers.  Satisfaction and Absenteeism  Satisfied employees have fewer avoidable absences.  Satisfaction and Turnover  Satisfied employees are less likely to quit.  Organizations take actions to retain high performers and to weed out lower performers.

  • 20. How Satisfied Are People in Their Jobs?  In general, people are satisfied with their jobs.  Depends on facets of satisfaction—tend to be less satisfied with pay and promotion opportunities.
