1. 3R SLOGAN FOR OUR
ENVIRONMENTAL
PROTECTION
(SOLIDWASTE MANAGEMENT)
2. THEME:
Effective approach for planning, design, management to maintain
sufficient, Economical and naturally responsible systems.
SOLIDWASTAGE:
Rapid increase in population and higher standards of living resulted in
development of solidwastes.
The Excessive presence of unused or discarded solid materials is called
SOLDWATAGE.
MANAGEMENT OF SOLIDWASTAGE:
Wastes has always been a part of the Earths ecosystem, but human activities
now generate so much waste that it needs proper “MANAGEMENT”.
SOURCES OF SOLIDWASTAGE:
Human activities generate many categories of wastes, each with its own
characteristics and disposal problems.
3. a. Domestic wastes:
Food wastes, plastics, vegetable wastes, egg shells, bulky items etc.,
b. Industrial wastes:
Packaging, materials, rubber, oils, paints, ceramics, grain pores etc.,
c. Agricultural wastes:
Fertilizers, pesticides, damaged items, peanut shells etc.,
d. Institutional wastes:
Paper, cardboard, pens etc.,
e. Constructional wastes:
Low quality of Steel, concrete, granite, cement, bricks breakage etc.,
f. Electronic wastes:
Batteries, chips, handsets, chargers, CD’s, storage devices etc.,
Some other wastes:
Wastage from natural disasters: Tsunami, cyclones, floods etc.,
Wastage from wars and conflicts.
4. REASONS:
• Improper manufacturing
• Demand on Requirements
• Lack of awareness
• Negligence
• No other option
RESULT OF SOLIDWASTE DISPOSALS:
Air pollution: Dust, burning of coal, fossil fuels.
Water pollution: contamination of plastics, wastage with water increases
unhygienic conditions
Soil pollution: plastics has a half life of more than 100 years and massive
usage of it cause millions of years to disintegrate
Sound pollution: ---------?
5. Effects on human and animal life:
Increase in toxicity causes health and may affect as cancer.
Decrease in strength of nutrients which indirectly from soil.
Breathing problems from burning of waste materials.
solids undissolved in water creating unhygienic conditions.
solid wastes can cause our life and existence in our future.
So in order to be protected from such circumstances we have to move with a
simple and basic technique called “3R RULE”.
What is 3R rule…?
REDUCE
REUSE
RECYCLE
6. REDUCE:
On an average a household contains 100 pounds of toxic waste solid materials
during a survey, if it neglected may become problem even to our survival.
METHODS OF REDUCING:
SOURCE REDUCTION: Use less material when making a product.
Minimize packaging products and do not buy pre-purchased items.
Refuse the large plastic carry bag offered by them.
Do not throw toxic materials such as batteries, thermometers and insecticides
into garbage.
We have to reduce a. fossil fuels.
b. usage of Electricity.
Because these are producing from emissions of natural gas and coal.
Example procedures for Reduction of waste:
Use Rechargable Batteries.
Study through e-sources.
Use Refillable bags and Refillable containers.
Plant more trees and use CFC free Refrigerators.
7. Crushed glass(cullet)reduces energy required to manufacture new glass by 50%.
LANDFILLING:Collection and waste in a landfill is burnt reduces the waste of
Garbage.
REUSE:
Using the same materials for our convenience is termed as REUSE.
If any products already left , we have to REUSE them instead of buying a new one
like poor people who collects waste and use those based on their requirements.
In the modern technology, Doctors of various specialization's reusing parts of one
person to another who needs it rather than allowing hem to decay matter.
So we have to REUSE the used materials.
Examples of REUSE:
Treasure bags from a carton.
Bracelet from a toothbrush.
Greeting card from a old CD case.
New piece of furniture out of salvage wood.
Paper covers from student’s Notebook pages.
8. RECYCLING:
Making of discarded materials into new useful products.
or
The process of developing a used item or any waste into new usable form.
17 Trees to make one ton of paper and where the paper discarded of….?
Mining of new aluminum is Expensive and when it is Resmelted, there is
considerable saving in cost and material.
Making paper from waste pulp rather than virgin pulp saves 50% energy.
Every ton of Recycled glass saves an energy equal to 100 litres of oil.
BENEFITS OF RECYCLING:
• By taking away some of waste reduces Environmental degradation.
• As against expenditure incurred on disposing waste, we now make money out
of waste materials.
PROBLEMS OF RECYCLING:
Technical and Economical.
Plastics are difficult to recycle because of polymer resins of distinct chemical
composition.
9. WASTE TO ENERGY
Biomass is also one type of solid wastage exiting from living organic matter.
The wastage can also be converted into energy.
Electricity[Electrical energy]:
1. combustion: Burn biomass directly, heat water to steam and sending it
through a steam turbine which then generates Electricity.
2. Gasification: A biomass gasifier takes dry biomass, such as agriculture waste
food and manure into CH4 in a gas engine (turbine) for Electricity production.
Wood has been used by humans for producing energy as heating, cooking Etc.,
Both wood and charcoal formed part of backbone of early Industries revolution
prior to discovery of coal for Energy.
Wood → charcoal → Energy
10. Practical example of 3R rule:
Bio-bus:
Based on 3R rule, entire designing, manufacturing and functioning of BIO-BUS
is processed.
The Bio-bus is fuelled by bio methane gas from sewage and food waste.
A single tank of ‘gas’ is Equivalent annual waste from 5 people.
Bus produces less Emissions than those from a diesel Engine.
Thus bus shows us that from quality poor and our wasted food are valuable
resources.
Environmental benefits:
→ Increase urban air quality.
→ <97% reduction in dangerous partial ash.
→ “well to wheel” bio methane produces 95% less Co2 than diesel.
“tank to wheel” Co2 Emission are 20-30% lower than from diesel vehicles.
11. ROLE OF GOVERNMENT AND AUTHORITIES:
To create awareness among people.
Proper implementation
ROLE OF PEOPLE:
Participating in this as individuals duty.
Making one another and our surroundings to get rid of solidwastes in any
concern.
CONCLUSION:
IF this 3R rule mainatained attentively,we will be considered as PROTECTORS OF
OUR ENVIRONMENT.
