Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T) is a technology, engineering,
construction and manufacturing company. It is one of the largest and
most respected companies in India's private sector. Seven decades of a
strong, customer-focused approach and the continuous quest for world-
class quality have enabled it to attain and sustain leadership in all its
major lines of business.
L&T Engineering & Construction division (E&C) wanted to build a
knowledge portal (Knowledge Online – KOL) to harness its intellectual
capital and reuse valuable information.
This would help in increasing customer responsiveness, reduce time
and costs incurred in delivering projects and gain a competitive edge.
 Eight years ago the company developed a knowledge sharing exercise
on a small scale with the support of Lotus Notes software.
ABOUT THE COMPANY
Knowledge Management: “Knowledge is a fluid mix of framed experience,
values, contextual information, expert insight and grounded intuition that
provides an environment and framework for evaluating and incorporating
new experiences and information.
 It originates and is applied in the minds of the knower. In organizations, it
often becomes embedded not only in documents or repositories but also
in organizational routines, processes, practices, and norms.”
Importance of Knowledge Management
It is a strategic part of the business.
Knowledge is part of the asset base which can be exploited.
Train workers to meet the long and short term goals of the firm.
Integration of knowledge with in the firm increases efficiency.

Knowledge Management process:-
 Capitalizing on IBM Lotus Dominos robust application development environment, L&T E&C
developed KnowNet, an integrated Knowledge Management portal that encompasses all
the aspects of KM.
 Its key modules are Knowledge- On-Line (KOL) that provides a complete, centralized
database of tacit knowledge learned from every project that the company undertakes.
 With the help of KOL, L&T engineers can now access all essential information on each
project along with guidelines, tips and troubleshooting advice from expert resources
SAMETIME
COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE
Sametime is a Lotus application that allows people in L&T to hold
meetings for giving online presentations, sharing and jointly editing
online documents and send instant messages or chat.
 A CoP is a team of people who are practitioners of a well-defined knowledge
domain who come together to capture, create and share relevant knowledge ,
in pursuit if business excellence.

  • 2. Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T) is a technology, engineering, construction and manufacturing company. It is one of the largest and most respected companies in India's private sector. Seven decades of a strong, customer-focused approach and the continuous quest for world- class quality have enabled it to attain and sustain leadership in all its major lines of business. L&T Engineering & Construction division (E&C) wanted to build a knowledge portal (Knowledge Online – KOL) to harness its intellectual capital and reuse valuable information. This would help in increasing customer responsiveness, reduce time and costs incurred in delivering projects and gain a competitive edge.  Eight years ago the company developed a knowledge sharing exercise on a small scale with the support of Lotus Notes software.   • 4. Knowledge Management: “Knowledge is a fluid mix of framed experience, values, contextual information, expert insight and grounded intuition that provides an environment and framework for evaluating and incorporating new experiences and information.  It originates and is applied in the minds of the knower. In organizations, it often becomes embedded not only in documents or repositories but also in organizational routines, processes, practices, and norms.” Importance of Knowledge Management It is a strategic part of the business. Knowledge is part of the asset base which can be exploited. Train workers to meet the long and short term goals of the firm. Integration of knowledge with in the firm increases efficiency.

Knowledge Management process:-  Capitalizing on IBM Lotus Dominos robust application development environment, L&T E&C developed KnowNet, an integrated Knowledge Management portal that encompasses all the aspects of KM.  Its key modules are Knowledge- On-Line (KOL) that provides a complete, centralized database of tacit knowledge learned from every project that the company undertakes.  With the help of KOL, L&T engineers can now access all essential information on each project along with guidelines, tips and troubleshooting advice from expert resources

SAMETIME COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE Sametime is a Lotus application that allows people in L&T to hold meetings for giving online presentations, sharing and jointly editing online documents and send instant messages or chat.  A CoP is a team of people who are practitioners of a well-defined knowledge domain who come together to capture, create and share relevant knowledge , in pursuit if business excellence.  Provide a supportive environment that encourages collaborative knowledge development, capacity building, problem solving and innovation
