This document provides an overview of the SEAD (Sustainable Environment and Ecological Development) services and tools for data curation, preservation, and sharing. It outlines the SEAD workshop agenda which demonstrates how to use project spaces to manage research data, metadata, and social features. It also describes how to publish and preserve data, connect with other researchers through profiles and a research network, and find data within a project space. The goal of SEAD is to provide secure, team-controlled spaces to manage research data throughout the data lifecycle and promote sharing and discovery.

5. Administering a Project Space
By default Admin has control over everything in
the space
For example, administrators can:
• Add/Edit space information
• Add people to the space
• Remove people from the space
• Create new roles
• Edit roles
• Assign people to roles

6. Uploading Data
In your project space you can upload any kind
of data (e.g. xls, xlsx, csv, avi, asf, gis, ppt, pdf,
doc, txt, xml, etc.)
SEAD displays recognized file types in the
browser
SEAD extracts metadata from the file

7. Creating Metadata for a Dataset
You and your team determined how much and
what kind of metadata to add
• Title
• Creator(s)
• Data maturity level
• License
• Location
• Abstract
• Experimental method
• Tags

8. Social Interaction around Data
SEAD has implemented a number of social
features:
• Likes/dislikes
• View counts
• Download counts
• Commenting

9. Activity: Upload and Work with Data
Upload your own data and/or the datasets that
have been provided via Dropbox
Edit and/or add metadata

10. Create Collections
Make managing datasets easier by creating
collections and sub-collections
Metadata can be added at the collection level

11. Link Derivations and Versions
SEAD has tools for linking together raw and
derived data products
Using SEAD you can also link multiple versions
of the same dataset together

uploaded
Upload a dataset as another version of an
already uploaded dataset

13. Find Data in Your Space
SEAD provides a number of ways to find data
in your space:
• Geospatially
• Tag browse
• Simple search

14. SEAD’s Research Network
Create a profile so that:
• You can link to profile from data pages
• Others can find you
• You can see a record of your productivity
• Graphs depicting network relationships

15. Setting Up a Profile
1. Click on the “Google Single Sign-On” button
from the Research Network landing page
2. Enter the Google account information.
3. You’ll be prompted to fill in your first and last
name and email address.
4. From your profile page, you can add a
profile picture, your title, research interests,
contact information, and publications (to
name just a few!).

16. Publishing Your Data
When you’re ready to publish/preserve
data, you can do so from your project
space
Matched to an institutional repository
Assigned a permanent identifier
Indexed for discoverability

To get your own project space, contact us.
100GB is free. If your project requires more space, cost is
negotiable.
