2. “Important as lifeboats are, most
crew and passengers on ships
would rather they remained
unused.
However, they are a necessary
last resort for those on board
and over the years many have
been grateful that they were
provided.”
3. Lifeboat is one of the most important
life-saving equipment onboard a
ship, which is used at the time of
extreme emergencies for
abandoning a ship.
4. An integral part of marine safety
procedures.
Aboard a ship to carry out emergency
abandonment.
Primary device for the evacuation of
passengers to a safer place.
Important for the vessel to carry a
specific number of lifeboats for safety
purposes.
5. According to SOLAS Regulations, each vessel should contain
enough lifeboats to accommodate 75% of the total people on board
(passengers and crew).
Inflatable or rigid liferaft must accommodate the remaining
passengers and crew.
HOW MANY LIFEBOATS DOES A SHIP NEED?
7. OPEN LIFEBOAT
Has no roof and is normally propelled with
oars. (compression ignition is used
sometimes)
Obsolete now due to stringent safety
norms.
Not too helpful in rain or bad weather.
8. CLOSED LIFEBOAT
Most popular lifeboats used.
Protects crew from seawater, strong wind and
rough weather.
Watertight integrity is high.
Gets upright on its own if toppled over by
waves.
Classified as Partially enclosed and
Fully enclosed lifeboats.
9. PARTIALLY ENCLOSED LIFEBOAT
Compact, light weight and reasonable size
Higher strength construction
Foldable cover
Raised and loaded by gravity luffing arm type
davit
10. Similar to an enclosed lifeboat but the
launching differs.
Aerodynamic nature helps penetrate water
without causing damage to body.
Located at the aft of the ship providing
maximum area for free fall.
FREE-FALL LIFEBOAT
11. FIREPROOF LIFEBOAT
Heavy insulation helps withstand flaming
substances.
When waterborne, it can protect members
from fire that envelops the lifeboat for about 8
minutes.
Is used during Oil Spills.
12. HYPERBARIC LIFEBOATS
A sealable diving chamber with hatches
large enough for people to enter and exit
A pressure vessel with compressed breathing
gas supply to raise the internal air pressure.
During accidents, it helps people escape
easily without undergoing decompression.
13. LIFEBOAT RELEASE MECHANISM
Whatever the type, the most important
consideration is to make sure it releases
quickly and perfectly As that ensures the
people in distress evacuate as fast as
possible.
Let's take a look at the 3 different
mechanisms practiced at sea...
14. ON LOAD MECHANISM
Focuses on releasing lifeboats from the
wire, with crew members inside the boat.
Operates with the boat close to water to
ensure a smooth landing
Renders least damage to the boat or the crew.
15. OFF LOAD MECHANISM
This type of mechanism releases lifeboats after
it is fully on the sea.
The hydrostatic piston unit at its bottom is
connected to the operating lever.
Once waterborne, the water pressure
moves the lever up which will release the
fall wire.
16. FREE FALL LIFEBOAT RELEASE
MECHANISM
Launches from stowed position by operating a
lever inside the boat to release it.
Causes the boat to slide through the titled
ramp and onto the surface of the water.
17. MAINTENANCE OF LIFEBOATS
Lifeboats make all the difference when it
comes to safety at sea. Hence, it is
important they function perfectly at all
times.

18. TIPS FOR PROPER LIFEBOAT MAINTENANCE
Inspect the boat every 3 months to avoid rupture and damage
Check hull regularly for cracks and drills
Check the air support system regularly
Keep pressure in check to avoid the passage of toxic gases
in the air bottles
Check sprinkler system regularly to avoid frozen or damaged
valves
Test engine for at least 3 minutes every week
Check battery regularly and renew it every 2-3 years
19. HOW OFTEN SHOULD A LIFEBOAT BE INSPECTED?
Adhering to onboard company checklist, weekly and monthly
checks are a must. Shore engineers shall conduct annual and 5
Yearly tests. Timely maintenance ensures perfect operation
condition of the lifeboat.
