Fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas were formed over millions of years from the remains of ancient organisms. Coal is a hard, black rock that is burned for energy, while oil was formed from microscopic sea creatures and is refined into fuel. Natural gas is composed mostly of methane and is extracted from underground reservoirs for use in powering homes and businesses. The document discusses two major oil spills, Exxon Valdez and Deepwater Horizon, which caused environmental damage.
2. What are Fossil Fuels? There are three different types of Fossil Fuels, Coal, Oil, and Natural Gas. They all formed over millions of years ago and now we use them as our energy source. For Example, Fossil Fuel is 85% of all our energy used here in United States.
3. Coal. Coal is a hard, black colored rock-like substance. There are three different types of coal anthracite, bituminous and lignite. Anthracite is the hardest one. They have the most carbon. Coal is used as a fossil fuel by it being burned and it produces energy. It powers power plants and factories.
4. Oil. Tiny diatoms are the source of oil. Diatoms are sea creatures the size of a pin head. Oil was formed when this Diatoms (which stored energy) died and fell to the sea floor. They later then got buried under the rocks and sediment. Over millions of years they then became oil that can be use as energy for us.
5. Natural Gas. Natural Gas is made up of mostly methane. Methane is highly flammable.Natural gas is usually found near petroleum underground. It is pumped from below ground and travels in pipelines to storage areas. Natural Gas has no odor and you can not see it. But it is mixed with chemicals that gives it a strong odor. Like rotten eggs. If there is a leak it can be easily detected.
6. Refineries. They are factories and places that convert Fossil Fuels like oil into products. Gasoline, Jet Fuel, and Stoves that use Fossil Fuels.
7. Exxon Valdez. In 1989, an Oil spill occurred when a ship carrying Oil was leaking. The ship hit a ground and it started to spill. Over six million gallons of oil spilled into the water. Overall 11.2 million gallons spilled off the ship. Help arrived on the first day that the spill happened. People of the Valdez were going to organize the largest oil spill clean up in the world.
8. Deep water horizon Oil Spill. After an explosion on one of the refinery's oil spill from under the water. From an underground well. This oil has been very dangerous, it is spreading and effecting the eco systems of the surrounding area dramatically. Massive oil spill there everyday. Also the oil was coming closer to the borders of the states. That can cause problems like fisherman losing business. There has been attempts to reduce the amount of oil going into the sea by building relieve oil refineries. Also trying to pump the oil out and try to contain it.
