Looking for the
German
connection in
family history
Eileen Dwane
This session will cover:
• an overview of the SLQ family history website
• some historical factors affecting German family
history research
• common problems associated with German
family history research for Australians
• some of the resources available at SLQ and
online to assist in tracing your German
connection

Who were the Germans?
• No unified country prior to 1800’s: numerous
small kingdoms, principalities & duchies
• 30 Years’ War, 1618-1648
• Invasion by neighbouring countries
• Napoleonic Wars
• 1815 Treaty of Vienna

Changing boundaries
Implications for German family history
research:
• no central recording agency
• no consistently used language in records
• different dates for commencement of civil
registration and other records
• different details in records
• frequent place name changes
Critical to establish place of origin and an
approximate date of arrival in Australia:
• exhaust Australian resources first
• look for information on places of origin in:
• family papers, BDM certificates;
• church records, immigration records;
[German] emigration records,
• naturalization records, newspapers,
• old maps and online gazetteers,
Where to start?
German names may be:
• misspelled
• filed under any element of a multi-part name,
e.g. von der Heide
• inaccurately transcribed by non-German speakers
• deliberately anglicized, e.g Hans/John;
Heinrich/Henry; Gartner/Gardener
German language in Australian
records: names
Always search flexibly and employ
wildcard options when possible
German umlaut used to modify vowels sounds
ä ö ü
• can affect filing order in alphabetic indexes
• source of frequent misspellings
• usual convention: replace as ae, oe, ue

Australian BDM indexes
Available for all Australian States:
• Variety of formats provide different search
options and results: microfiche, CD-ROM &
online
Use wildcards* whenever possible
• Date ranges and details in indexes and
certificates vary from state to state.
Check SLQ Info Guide: Births, Deaths & Marriages

Notes de l'éditeur

  1. Example of problem Patronymic naming patterns in Schleswig Holstein in North of Germany
  2. Umlaut tells me that it could be spelled Koenig. Non German speakers may have spelled the name as it sounded to them, e.g. adding ‘r’ sound. Robert seems to have alternated between “Gustav Robert” and ‘Robert” fairly regularly. Therefore use of wild card is useful Both given and maiden names for his wife are spelled in a variety of ways NOTE how parents’ names are given in full in death index – very useful and may save having to purchase the certificate.
  3. Note variations in spelling of surname. There is even a KORNIG.
  4. Both given and maiden names for his wife are spelled in a variety of ways Variants forms of Katherina/Katharina, Catherine, Catharina Enders/Anders name. Was there an e or an a at the end of her given name. Germans would sound the e as an a’. No Australian BDM indexes give details of the exact place of birth. So you may eed to buy a certificate Which is the correct form in original German records?
  5. Parish records can often augment the information we have from BDM indexes and in some instances can save us from having to buy BDM certificates.
  6. Note: text in German. SLQ only have a limited selection of Lutheran parish records, most will be at the South Australian Lutheran Archives.
  7. State responsibility up to the mid 1920s or so. Immigration Board lists for assisted immigrants to NSW probably the most useful – often provide details of native place and names of parents and where resident in Germany
  8. 1860’s to mid 1870’s manyQld immigration records lost at the end of the 19th century in floods. This is a typical example of a ‘reconstructed’ list – very little detail.
  9. 1860’s to mid 1870’s many Qld immigration records lost at the end of the 19th century in floods. This is a typical example of a ‘reconstructed’ list – very little detail.
  10. This sort of record helps explain why so may immigrants appear to have swum here!
  11. Women not generally found in naturalisation records – they weren’t allowed to vote anyway and usually couldn’t own land UNLESS they were widowed. Note information on Friedrich Berger is useful. Wittenberg, now officially called Lutherstadt Wittenberg, is in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt
  12. Articles on German migrants researched by Jenny Paterson from State Records NSW and other sources. Very helpful transcriptions. Maiden names of married women provided from details in lists and helpful additional information about places of origin, employment, etc. Painstakingly indexed by one of our family history volunteers, Lynn Heilbronn, who has indexed the named under their variant forms to be sure of there being picked up easily by the researcher. Our catalguing colleagues have also made the volumes more accessible by adding the name of the ship or other topic covered in each issue to the catalogue entry and the front of the
