Microgeneration is an important technology to assist in meeting Government targets for
substantial reductions in Carbon emissions. Scotland has an abundance of natural
resources and is promoted as the best place in Europe for renewable energy generation
but where is product development and the manufacturing capability in Scotland? This
presentation discusses legislative framework, technical requirements and market for
microgeneration products, with a focus on the opportunities for product development and
manufacture by Scottish companies.

12.15 Case Study Examples of Innovative Building Technologies, Prof Sean Smith,
Edinburgh Napier University
The scale and diversity of the construction sector provides diverse opportunities and entry
drivers for new building technologies. This presentation will focus on building technologies
adopted in housing and several case studies. The drivers behind their design, cost benefit
factors and building performance influence will be discussed.
1.00 Lunch
1.45 Demand Side Energy Management, Prof John Counsell, Strathclyde University
With security of energy a global issue, the focus is now on how to manage our energy
utilisation. University of Strathclyde has been working on a range of solutions for the
market, this presentation will focus on the skill set available to SME’s within the energy
management sector at BRE’s Centre of Excellence within Energy Systems Research Unit
at University of Strathclyde
2.15 Technical Considerations of Low Carbon Construction, Wayne Ward, BRE
Each category of construction product is subject to a number of verification and statutory
standards that must satisfy the market a product is fit for purpose; failure to meet the
required standard will ultimately lead to failure when commercialising the product. The low
carbon buildings agenda that is driving reduced emission targets provides a further level
of complexity, but also opportunity in the market. Focussing on construction materials, this
presentation will discuss the key elements which should form the backbone of product
development in the Low Carbon Built Environment.
2.45 Coffee Break and round table discussion
3.15 Financing Innovation, Ewan McPherson, Ideality
Finding the money to support an innovative development is a key issue, whether it is
being sought internally within the business, or externally from banks, private investors or
public sources. Resources are always restricted so your innovation proposal will be
competing with many others. You need to create the most compelling case in terms that
the funding source understands. This presentation will provide a framework of criteria for
consideration.
