This document discusses creativity and innovation for school leaders. It begins by defining creativity as using imagination rather than routine skills to imagine new solutions. It then discusses why innovation is important, noting that schools that do not innovate will decline. The document outlines some key challenges schools may face in the next 10 years and areas for potential innovation, such as teaching and learning processes. It also discusses common barriers to creativity and provides techniques to overcome blocks and generate new ideas, such as brainstorming, visualization, and mind mapping. Finally, it covers how to effectively pitch and sell new creative ideas to decision-makers by addressing potential objections and doing homework to build support.

Brain Storming
Select a group
leader and describe
the problem. Using
a flipchart, ask each
member in turn to
suggest a solution.
Record all ideas
on the and,
if possible,
number them to
ease final
selection.
Encourage and
provoke team
members to give
ideas or pass. No
evaluation of ideas
should be permitted.
Once the leader feels there are
enough ideas, move to the
evaluation phase to choose one
or more viable solutions using a
consensus selection
method
18. Visualization
Highly creative people will tell you that once
they have an idea, they take some time to make
a clear and detailed picture of the final,
implemented solution.
Soccer players see themselves creating new moves
over and over in their minds.
Painters visualize the finished canvas.

Elaborate on it mentally.
Whenever you have
an idea, stop and
savour it.
20. Mind Mapping
Mind Mapping is a brainstorming tool.
The principle behind mind mapping is
that the process of creativity is organic
rather than linear and that creative
thoughts grow like the branches of a
tree rather than in lines like in a a book
or on a computer screen.
21. Note sub-ideas as keywords on
‘branches’ of trunks and then ‘wings’.
Put main ideas as
keywords on ‘trunks’
radiating out from the
middle.
Start in the middle of the page with
the problem.
Wherever possible use
color plus logos or
pictures instead of
words.

24. Selling Creative Ideas
The enemy
“I have seen the enemy and he is us”
It is true that we are usually our own worst enemy when it
comes to our own creativity, but even if we know we have the
idea of the century, selling it to management (or the Board of
Trustees) may be incredibly tough. The status quo is
comfortable, creative change is not.
25. It is a great idea but,
unfortunately, we don’t
have the budget.

26. Selling Creative Ideas
Doing your home work
Do your homework before proposing your new idea to the
decision-makers. One method to prepare to face the 'enemy' (status
quo inertia) is to conduct an analysis of the forces working against
your idea as well as those working in your favor.
27. Selling Creative Ideas Doing your home work
• No budget
• Principal likes to ‘play it safe’
• Shortage of staff
• New technology needed to
produce it
• Creativity is part of our mission
• Parent complaints show need
• Students’ performance are
declining
• Competition with other schools
