The quality of the education & training is such -
valued by the industry & its host University
ranked in the top 10% of like courses in Aust/NZ  & in the top 20 of like worldwide
There is cooperation between industry (public & private sectors) and the postgraduate programs of Universities –
innovation is fostered and achieved -
there is outreach program to bring the benefits, knowledge and skill to industry,[object Object]
Required to Address the Issues The WILL  to do – from the whole industry and needs to be an ongoing commitment LEADERSHIP, ACCOUNTABILITY & COOPERATION, –from allparts of industry & academe STRATEGY – a plan to achieve the requirements ENERGY, RESOURCES & MONEY  –pool resources?  - some $s to commence & to raise required $s FOCUS & TENACITY & TIME, –will take a number of years ASSESS PROGRESS REGULARLY & ADJUSTMENT - need to establish a framework that will maintained by stakeholders – not one off

What was done in July & August Initial meeting of some of key industry (private sector, government and academia) - Outline schema to address issues was developed Small working groups established in areas of … Attracting schools leavers into training Establishing the sustainable academic base Addressing cadastral surveying – shortage, training, accreditation Raising $s & resources required
  • 12. What planned for October 2010 Some initial ideas from the small working groups Another meeting of wide variety of industry players Post Oct 2010? Will depend on- Who steps forward to lead Ability of various segments of the industry to work holistically Who willing to accept accountability
  • 13. In Conclusion We have a serious problem Not insurmountable – addressed similar 30 yrs ago Will take Leadership Full Cooperation -all industry segments & major employers Time, effort, resources & $s A solution for the future – not the present or past NB – The Engineering Industry has the same problem –Industry National Task Force set up – can learn from them
  • 14. What if don’t address? Some Uni programs will be closed down – an endangered species?? Skills Shortages will get worse Poaching intensifies– eg engineering to mining More OS recruitment – meeting the need??? Individual firms & elements seek to maximise own interest Will muddle along somehow Long slow decline - Won’t be great Recommend the industry to your children?
