3. INTRODUCTION
The aim of this
presentation is to examine
issues related to the sound
(Audio devices, formats
and codes), which will
serve us later if we want to
work with music or sound.
4. AUDIO DEVICES
Microphone: A microphone is an example of a transducer. The sound
information exists as patterns of air pressure; the microphone changes this
information into patterns of electric current.
Loud Speaker: A loud speaker is an electroacoustic transducer that
produces sound in response to an electrical audio signal input.
Sound card: It is an expansion card or integrated circuit that provides a
computer with the ability to produce sounds that can be heard by the user
either over speakers or headphones
Sound port: A sound port serves as an interface between the device and
other peripheral devices.
Headphones are a hardware device that either plugs into your computer
(line out) or your speakers and allow you to privately listen to audio without
disturbing anyone else.
5. CODECS
A codec is a device or computer program capable of encoding or
decoding a digital data stream or signal. Depending on its
compresion quality we can differentiate two type of codecs lossy
codecs and lossless codecs:
The loss codecs reduce quality by some amount in
order to achieve compression
The lossless codecs are used for archiving data
in a compressed form while retaining all of the information present
in the original stream.
Lossy codecs:
Lossless codecs:
6. SOUND FORMATS
Sound format also know as audio file format is a flie format for storing
digital audio data on a computer system. Among the sound formats, we
can differentiate three major groups of audio file format:
Uncompressed audio formats:
Formats with lossless compression:
Formats with lossy compression:
MIDI: (Short for Musical Instrument Digital Interface) is a technical
standard that describes a protocol, digital interface and connectors.
