• Situated on the equator on Africa's
east coast.
• It has a rapidly growing population of
around 44 million people.
• It is also one of the most ethnically
diverse countries in the world.
• Due to this ethnic diversity Kenya has
a multilingual society. Although the
official languages are English and
Swahili there are around 62 other
languages spoken in the country.
3. Project Information
This is the second year that SVA has sent volunteers to Kenya.
This year we will be working with Xchange Scotland to partner with an NGO
called Kenya Voluntary Development Association (KVDA).
Volunteers will be offered training by the NGO on arrival.
After project, volunteers have the opportunity to travel around Kenya and
neighboring countries.
4. Project Format for 2015
• 4 week long project during Summer
2016
• Dates are flexible at the moment
• 2 weeks based in an urban
environment in the heart of Kisumu
city & 2 weeks in a rural community
40km away.
• Activities (this year) included
teaching entrepreneurship to young
people in the community &
participation in a
construction/environmental project
5. Project objectives:
1. To provide work-readiness trainings to young people.
2. To encourage young people to participate in relevant learning and work
experience/opportunities beyond their current education and training
activities.
3. To undertake training activities that will provide youths with fundamental
knowledge in market relevant skills.
4. To undertake environmental and construction projects.
6. Situation for youth in Kenya
There are many significant issues affecting
the youth of Kenya which include issues such
as :
•Poor infrastructure in education
•Inequality/regional disparity
•& Displacement
7. Costs involved in Volunteering
Personal costs to be covered by volunteer:
Return flights to Kenya, vaccinations &
antimalaria tablets, travel insurance, visa and
other personal costs such as spending money
for trip etc.
Accommodation & food are included within the
project budget.
Before leaving for project, volunteers are expected to raise around £6000
as a group of 10.
£3000 of this is fundraised as a group.
£300 is fundraised personally.
