Backup Power in Dubai Airport based on SUNLIGHT VRLA Batteries
The Need
Dubai International Airport is a major airline hub in Middle East. It is the main airport of Dubai and it consists of three terminals, having a total capacity of 80 million passengers annually. Terminal 3 is the largest building in the world by floor space and the largest airport terminal in the world. Dubai Airport (DXB) is spread over an area of 8,500 acres. Currently DBX is the 7th busiest airport in the world by passenger traffic and the 2nd busiest airport in the world by international passenger traffic. In addition to being an important passenger traffic hub, the airport is also the busiest cargo airport in world, handling 2.44 million tonnes of cargo.
Because of Dubai Airport’s size and vital role in terms of passengers and cargo traffic, the airport has to be fully functional 24x7x365. Failing to respond on a power failure will surely result in a series of issues both in terms of safety and costs. Therefore the designing, installation and functioning of reliable backup power systems aiming to provide uninterruptible power supply in case of power failure is a very critical and an integral part of its operations.
The Challenge
Dubai airport can be characterized as a masterpiece of operations. In this context, coping with its rapid growth over the years, while safeguarding in parallel its everyday operations in terms of power supplies is a very challenging task.
One of the key success factors for achieving this is the selection of reliable partners that can provide the right solution, consisting of high quality products and premium services, while also having adequate know-how and resources to support all future facilities’ expansions.
The Solution
Following advanced engineering and procurement processes the Dubai Airport has installed, through accredited EPC Contractors, more than 1.200 Uninterruptible Power Supply Systems with power rating ranging from 10 to 300 KVA.
Since 2006, in co-operation with SUNLIGHT’s long-lasting local partner, who act as an EPC contractor for the Airport’s Power Supplies, more than 43.000 SUNLIGHT VRLA Batteries (SPb Series) have been installed and successfully support airport’s UPS systems.
Technical Features of SUNLIGHT VRLA SPb Series
Valve Regulated Lead Acid batteries with AGM Technology Manufactured according to IEC60896-21&22 & BS6290-4 standards
Capacity range: 33-200Ah
Voltage range: 12V EUROBAT

Results & Impact
For almost a decade, the high performance and reliability of SUNLIGHT’s VRLA SPb Batteries have
contributed to Dubai Airport’s seamless operation. Furthermore, the maintenance free operation of
these batteries has optimized the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), by reducing operational expenses
and offering maximum lifetime value and cost efficiency.
In this context and taking into consideration the Airport’s plan for further expansion (plans for an
investment of $32 billion), SUNLIGHT is placed as a basic candidate for providing its energy storage
solutions in the future, being considered a Reliable Battery Solutions partner for high demanding
Infrastructure Projects.
