What is CULTURE ?
✓ Culture refers to a shared general beliefs and values that defines
what is right and what is wrong and what is good and what is bad.
✓ The values which are same across the different cultures in the whole
world are called Trans-cultural HumanValues.
▪ These values prevail in the entire world.
Trans Cultural Values make an individual a good manager.
Some of the trans-cultural values followed by managers are:-

b) Loyalty towards workers

d) Open minded and transparency in dealing

➢ Trans-cultural practices & values have become significantly important in
corporate business.
➢ The synergy between corporate culture & managerial values gives rise to cross-
cultural practices which helps in making effective strategic options & performing
the business tasks successfully.
➢ Skills, capabilities, knowledge, technology & experiences are better facilitated by
cross-cultural approach particularly in multinational organizations.
➢ Compatibility between societal values & managerial practices influences the

Trans-cultural human values in Management Education
Multicultural education has two view points:
➢Assimilation or melting pot: In this, small cultural people should give their
original culture, identities, language, values, behavior & communication
styles & merge into the predominant bigger culture.
➢Global perspective: It promotes trans-cultural human values & equity
amongst all cultural groups in the society. It allows people to respect &
appreciate all existing cultural groups.
Trans-cultural human values in Management Education
• Trans-cultural competence is the process in which a person adopts multiple
ways of perceiving, evaluating, believing & solving problems to understand
& learn to negotiate cultural diversity among nations.
• Equity pedagogy: It aims at achieving fair & equal educational
opportunities for all the children.
• Curriculum reform: It should include curriculum theory & historical inquiry
so that bias in textbooks, media & other educational materials can be easily
detected.
• Teaching for social justice: It develops understanding of the evidence of the
individual i.e. what exactly an individual is..

Secularism
❑Secularism is the doctrine, that, morality should be based solely with regard
to the well-being of mankind in the present life to the exclusion of all
considerations drowns from belief in God.
❑Indian conception of secularism required that there shall be no state religion
and the state shall treat all religions equally.
❑Secularism means non-religious.
❑Secularism means being materialistic and task oriented for managers.
❑Secularism is a professional value which completely ignores the difference
of caste, colour, religion, culture etc.
The main features of Secularism
I. Primary emphasis on the material improvement of human being.
II. Respect for and search for all truth whatever be its source which can be
tested in reality to observe whether it leads to human betterment.
III. Concern for this era or world and its improvement.
IV. Primary Profit Oriented:- Firm’s main objective is to earn profit fairly
without hurting any faith, religion or culture. One should plan the actions
in the way to maximize the profit without discriminating your work force.
V. Responsibility towards Society:- Decision should be made keeping in
mind that it will be more beneficial to the organization and society. One
should take the maximum efforts for the well being of society.
vi. Professionalism:- Decision taken should not be on the basis of religion,
caste, colour etc. Decision taken should not show personal image or
business.
vii. Secular values lay emphasis on brotherhood of man and unity of the
world.
viii. Secularism emphasis on the cultural and material welfare of human
beings.
Effects of Secular Management
• Management acted as a puppet of profit, and the motto is more and more
money at any cost.
• External growth at the cost of internal growth.
• Man as a human being stands nowhere.
• There is no human approach, erosion of ethical, spiritual, moral and human
values.
• In an organizational structure, erosion of human touch between top
management and operatives.
• Rampant use of natural resources.
Spirituality
❑Spirituality involves a belief in a relationship with some higher power, divine being
or infinite source of energy.
❑Derived from Latin word SPIRITUS which refers to “breath” or “wind”.

Role of Management in Spirituality
• Having an organizational vision/ mission that helps individuals make a difference
in the world they could not otherwise make;
• leading and managing by using values that devoid of fear and abuse out of the
workplace and engage the hearts and minds of people;
• allowing for decision making responsibility through self-managed, empowered
teams;
• trusting people and letting them be who they are to use and develop their gifts
and skills;
• offering collective forms of reward and recognition; and
• providing a way for employees to fulfill their family and other social obligations.
Adapting Secularism and Spirituality
together
• Worshipping Tulsi- Tulsi is a kind of plant. We do worship of Tulsi by giving
water or by lighting a lamp in the plant of Tulsi. Secularism believes that
lighting a lamp in Tulsi kills insects. Tulsi also has medicinal value as it cures
cough and cold.
• Giving Argh to Sun- It is spiritual value to give argh to sun in the morning
because sun is God. Secular values believe that when we give argh to sun,
our eye sights will also become good.
• Touching feet of elders- According to spirituality, we get blessing by
touching feet of elders. While a secular value says that blood circulation is
maintained by it.
