How do Aussie consumers
really want to shop
in the future?
We’ve been thinking a lot about
how shopping
habits are changing
in Australia.
Yes,
bricks and mortar
stores still exist.
But,
more people are
shopping online.
and,
Amazon
hasn’t even arrived yet!
Things are changing quickly…
We began to wonder...
What will
things look like
in five years’ time?
Will we all order our weekly shop through Alexa?
Will we all have an Amazon Dash
button to automatically
reorder our toilet roll?
Will drones deliver our
ASOS shopping?
And the bigquestion...
Are consumers
even thinking
about this
So,
we asked them.
(with a little help from ACRS)
Here’s
what we
learnt.
In five years’ time,
how would you prefer
to receive information
about new products
and services?

The majority
wanted to

search online.
What we learnt:
Consumers like to do
their own research.
Once consumers have
an idea of what they want,
how did they say
they wanted to compare
the product/service
they are thinking of buying?

We asked consumers
how would they prefer to
do most of their shopping

There seems to be
a trend here.
Consumers are
still on the fence about
fully embracing
online shopping.
The machines are
not taking
over yet.
Seeing is
believing after all.
When asked which products/services
they would leave to automated
technology (hello Alexa),
half wouldn’t
even consider it. 53%

five years’ time.
So,
why is this
It seems
Australians are
just a social
bunch at heart.
The majority of shoppers (59%)
admitted they would like an equal
balance between using technology
and interacting with people.
In fact, the majority of shoppers (59%)
would prefer to interact with
humans rather than technology
when they have a problem with an item
or service they have purchased.
Complaining to a computer
just doesn’t cut it.
what can retailers
do right now to get
ahead of the curve?
So,
Firstly,
the majority of shoppers (71%) said
they would like to see
real-time, in-store stock
status from retailers.
Something like this…
Click and collect functionality
Half (56%) of consumers said
they would like
delivery to their exact
location by a person.
Nobody
wants to put Dave the
delivery man out of a job
Again,
us Aussies are
a sociable bunch
And if
the product needs
to be returned?
A whopping 80% of consumers said that
they would most like to see
a free and easy returns policy
from retailers in five years’ time.
Amazon’s recent
announcement
about its new returns policy
to get the general idea.

how would consumers
like to be kept informed of
products and services?
Consumers were split on
whether they would be willing to
share their personal information
with a brand or retailer.

needs and tastes)
So,
our
conclusion?
for bricks and mortar
stores alongside online.
There’s still a place01.
whether it be the delivery
driver or the shop assistant.
People like dealing with people:02.
in the visibility of stock
availability, delivery and returns.
But, where consumers do
want to see innovation is03.
