2. Ethical Issues during Hijack Whether to listen to the Hijacker or to listen to the ATC Passenger Safety Safety of the people on the ground. To risk his/her own life by lying to the Hijackers
3. Categorical Imperative The pilots should not focus on the consequence and should be ethical during hijack. If a pilot is lying to the hijackers about low fuel etc. to ensure the safety of the passengers then it is unethical according to Immanuel Kant. However, personally I don’t agree to this as a pilot should focus of the final consequences and should use any means (ethical or unethical) to reach the desired end.
5. Smart move by pilot Ethiopian Airlines Flight 961 was hijacked in November, 1996. The hijackers demanded the plane to be flown to Australia but the pilots insisted that they did not have enough fuel which was true. The hijackers didn’t listen. The pilots continued to fly along the African coast later crashing near the sea shore which saved the life of 50 passengers on board flight 961.
6. Pilots with Guns? For safety issues related to hijacking They could misuse the gun as well and hijack themselves as there have been issues where the official pilots have hijacked the aircraft.
7. Utilitarianism The pilots have to act thinking about the consequences in a hijacking situation. They have to take care of the consequences as they are responsible for the lives of all on board.
8. Pilot the hijacker There has been an incident where the official pilot has been the hijacker. A Chinese pilot with his wife hijacked the plane as he was upset about poor working conditions such as low wages and a late promotion.
9. What would you do ? Try and fight the hijackers Obey the hijackers Try and play smart by fooling them Listen to the ATC and disobey the hijackers
