• Unbelief of Family – John 7:1-13
• You Do Not Know God – John 7:14-31
• Come To Me And Drink – John 7:32-44
• Unbelief of The Jewish Leaders – John 7:45-52
John 7:1-9
1 After this, Jesus went around in Galilee. He did not want to go about in Judea
because the Jewish leaders there were looking for a way to kill him. 2 But when
the Jewish Festival of Tabernacles was near, 3 Jesus’ brothers said to him, “Leave
Galilee and go to Judea, so that your disciples there may see the works you do.
4 No one who wants to become a public figure acts in secret. Since you are
doing these things, show yourself to the world.” 5 For even his own brothers did
not believe in him.
6 Therefore Jesus told them, “My time is not yet here; for you any time will do.
7 The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify that its works are
evil. 8 You go to the festival. I am not going up to this festival, because my time
has not yet fully come.” 9 After he had said this, he stayed in Galilee.
Summary of John 7:1-9
• Jesus’ brothers were not believers at this time.
• Had not come to faith in Him as Savior
• Family dynamics?
• Became believers after resurrection and ascension (Acts 1:14)
• Brother, James, became a pillar of the church (Galatians 2:9)
• James presided over the council of Jerusalem (Acts 15)
• Wrote the Book of James
• Jesus was expected to go to Jerusalem for the Feast of Tabernacles.
• Brothers were acting as campaign managers!
• Promoting Jesus as a political King
• Their intentions were good.
• “My time has not yet come …” crucifixion and resurrection were to occur
during Passover, not the Feast of Tabernacles.
John 7:10-13
10 However, after his brothers had left for the festival, he went also, not publicly,
but in secret. 11 Now at the festival the Jewish leaders were watching for Jesus
and asking, “Where is he?” 12 Among the crowds there was widespread
whispering about him. Some said, “He is a good man.” Others replied, “No, he
deceives the people.” 13 But no one would say anything publicly about him for
fear of the leaders.

days. 35 The first day is a sacred assembly; do no regular work. 36 For seven
days present food offerings to the Lord, and on the eighth day hold a sacred
assembly and present a food offering to the Lord. It is the closing special
assembly; do no regular work.)

Temple in Jerusalem (Model)

Temple Court

John 7:14-24
14 Not until halfway through the festival did Jesus go up to the temple courts and
begin to teach. 15 The Jews there were amazed and asked, “How did this man
get such learning without having been taught?”
16 Jesus answered, “My teaching is not my own. It comes from the one who sent
me. 17 Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out whether my
teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own. 18 Whoever speaks
on their own does so to gain personal glory, but he who seeks the glory of the
one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him. 19 Has not
Moses given you the law? Yet not one of you keeps the law. Why are you trying
to kill me?”
20 “You are demon-possessed,” the crowd answered. “Who is trying to kill you?”
21 Jesus said to them, “I did one miracle, and you are all amazed. 22 Yet,
because Moses gave you circumcision (though actually it did not come from
Moses, but from the patriarchs), you circumcise a boy on the Sabbath. 23 Now if
a boy can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses may not be
broken, why are you angry with me for healing a man’s whole body on the
Sabbath? 24 Stop judging by mere appearances, but instead judge correctly.”
Summary of John 7:14-24
• Jesus says that His doctrine comes from God.
• Jewish leaders thought theirs did also!!
• He responds to their criticism of Sabbath healing of crippled man in John
5.
• Jewish priests are violating Sabbath by circumcising on Sabbath.
• You have lost the meaning of the Sabbath.
John 7:25 – 27
25 At that point some of the people of Jerusalem began to ask, “Isn’t this the
man they are trying to kill? 26 Here he is, speaking publicly, and they are not
saying a word to him. Have the authorities really concluded that he is the
Messiah? 27 But we know where this man is from; when the Messiah comes, no
one will know where he is from.”
28 Then Jesus, still teaching in the temple courts, cried out, “Yes, you know me,
and you know where I am from. I am not here on my own authority, but he who
sent me is true. You do not know him, 29 but I know him because I am from him
and he sent me.”
• (Jesus tells the crowd and leaders that they do not know God. They
thought they were serving God.)
John 7: 30 – 32
30 At this they tried to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his
hour had not yet come. 31 Still, many in the crowd believed in him. They said,
“When the Messiah comes, will he perform more signs than this man?”
32 The Pharisees heard the crowd whispering such things about him. Then the
chief priests and the Pharisees sent temple guards to arrest him.
33 Jesus said, “I am with you for only a short time, and then I am going to the
one who sent me. 34 You will look for me, but you will not find me; and where I
am, you cannot come.”
35 The Jews said to one another, “Where does this man intend to go that we
cannot find him? Will he go where our people live scattered among the Greeks,
and teach the Greeks? 36 What did he mean when he said, ‘You will look for
me, but you will not find me,’ and ‘Where I am, you cannot come’?”
• Where? Jesus answers in John 14
John 14:1-4
1 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me.
2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you
that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a
place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may
be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I am going.”
5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can
we know the way?”
6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the
Father except through me. 7 If you really know me, you will know my Father as
well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”
The Last & Greatest Day of the Feast “Day of the Great Hosanan”
• Procession through Water Gate with golden vessel to get water at Pool of
Siloam repeating Isaiah 12.
• 1 In that day you will say:
Isaiah 12:1-3
1…

2

3

“I will praise you, Lord.
Although you were angry with me,
your anger has turned away
and you have comforted me.
Surely God is my salvation;
I will trust and not be afraid.
The Lord, the Lord himself, is my strength and my defense;
he has become my salvation.”
With joy you will draw water
from the wells of salvation.
Processional to Pool of Siloam
Pouring Water from Pool of Siloam
• Water poured along with wine into a basin at base of altar singing Psalms
113-118(Hallel)
• “Praise the Lord.”
• These flowed down a conduit which carried the water/wine to the Brook
of Kidron
• Raise lulav and etrog and shout “Lift your hands!”
• This was the closing ceremony of Feast of Tabernacles
Symbolism of Water Pouring Ceremony
• Prayer for the Fall rains upon which Israel’s crops depended.
• Water which flowed from the rock for Israel in Exodus 17:6.
• Pictured the coming of the Messiah and His Kingdom.
• The pouring out of the God’s Spirit upon Israel and all nations of believers.
John 7:37-39
37 On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud
voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in
me, as Scripture has said, streams (rivers) of living water will flow from within
him.” 39 By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later
to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet
been glorified.
Message of John 7: 37 “Let anyone who is thirsty ...”
• “To thirst” – Recognize your need for God
• Only condition is need… to be thirsty
• Human soul has thirst for God
• Soul has something like physical thirst
• You were made to drink God
• All scripture is a banquet for your soul
• Drink and be satisfied.
“If any man thirst …”
• Jesus is what satisfies the soul.
• What Jesus offers is what will satisfy the soul.
• Goal of our ministry as Christians:
• Awaken the need of ‘soul thirst’ to non-believers
• See Fruit of Spirit in our lives
• Point them to the one who can satisfy that need
• “Let Others See Jesus In You”
“… let him come to me and drink.”
• Jesus is what we drink; He is the water.
John 6:35
35 Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never
go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”
• Your soul was made for Jesus only.
• Things of life do not satisfy!
“… come to me and drink.”
• Your soul can drink.
• A spiritual action
• “Then sings my soul, my Savior God to thee, how great thou art.”
• Even if your body cannot move, your soul can eat and drink Jesus.
Isaiah 55:1 “Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; ...”
John 7:38 “… Whoever believes in me ...”
• Coming and drinking are what it means to believe in Jesus.
John 6:35 … “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry,
and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”
• Believing is a spiritual coming to Jesus to be satisfied.
John 7:38 “… streams of living water will flow from within him.”
• You get a spring of water, not just a sip of water.
• Rivers (streams) of living water flow out of your soul.
“… as the Scriptures said, ...”
• All Scripture points to Jesus as Messiah.
• Jesus would be the fulfillment of the Feast of Tabernacles.
• God had this all planned and timed since the creation of man.
Isaiah 58:11
11
The Lord will guide you always;
he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land
and will strengthen your frame.
You will be like a well-watered garden,
like a spring whose waters never fail.
John 7:38b – 39
38b “…streams of living water will flow from within him.” 39 By this he meant the
Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the
Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.
John 7:39 The Future Coming of the Holy Spirit
• Fellowship with the risen and glorified Christ could not be known yet.
• The atonement for sin had to occur first.
John 14:16-17
16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you
and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth.
• Jesus is telling them, “It’s me that will be flowing out of you through the
Holy Spirit!
Responses To Jesus
John 7:40-44
40 On hearing his words, some of the people said, “Surely this man is the
Prophet.”
41 Others said, “He is the Messiah.”
Still others asked, “How can the Messiah come from Galilee? 42 Does not
Scripture say that the Messiah will come from David’s descendants and from
Bethlehem, the town where David lived?” 43 Thus the people were divided
because of Jesus. 44 Some wanted to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him.
• Same responses today: Believe; Refuse; Unsure
John 7:45-52
Summary
• Temple guards refuse to arrest Jesus.
• 46 ...”No one ever spoke the way this man does.”
• Pharisees determined to discredit and kill Jesus.
• Nicodemus assigned task of determining Jesus’ hometown or
Galilean ancestry.

10 October 27, 2013, John 7:1-53, Jesus Goes To The Feast Of Tabernacles

  • 1. Jesus Goes To The Feast of Tabernacles John 7:1-53 October 27, 2013 First Baptist Church Jackson, Mississippi USA References • THE GOSPEL OF JOHN: A Commentary by Fredrick Bruner • JOHN: St. Andrew’s Expositional Commentary by R. C. Sproul • Chapter 7 of John, a Sermon by John Piper Studying The Gospel of John • John helps set the stage with details of the situation for Jesus’ sermons and comments. • 2/3 of John’s Gospel covers the last week of Jesus’ life on earth. • Every detail of Jesus’ encounters is important. • God put every situation and person in place for Jesus to respond. John Chapter 7 Preview • Unbelief of Family – John 7:1-13 • You Do Not Know God – John 7:14-31 • Come To Me And Drink – John 7:32-44 • Unbelief of The Jewish Leaders – John 7:45-52 John 7:1-9 1 After this, Jesus went around in Galilee. He did not want to go about in Judea because the Jewish leaders there were looking for a way to kill him. 2 But when the Jewish Festival of Tabernacles was near, 3 Jesus’ brothers said to him, “Leave Galilee and go to Judea, so that your disciples there may see the works you do. 4 No one who wants to become a public figure acts in secret. Since you are doing these things, show yourself to the world.” 5 For even his own brothers did not believe in him. 6 Therefore Jesus told them, “My time is not yet here; for you any time will do. 7 The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify that its works are
  • 2. evil. 8 You go to the festival. I am not going up to this festival, because my time has not yet fully come.” 9 After he had said this, he stayed in Galilee. Summary of John 7:1-9 • Jesus’ brothers were not believers at this time. • Had not come to faith in Him as Savior • Family dynamics? • Became believers after resurrection and ascension (Acts 1:14) • Brother, James, became a pillar of the church (Galatians 2:9) • James presided over the council of Jerusalem (Acts 15) • Wrote the Book of James • Jesus was expected to go to Jerusalem for the Feast of Tabernacles. • Brothers were acting as campaign managers! • Promoting Jesus as a political King • Their intentions were good. • “My time has not yet come …” crucifixion and resurrection were to occur during Passover, not the Feast of Tabernacles. John 7:10-13 10 However, after his brothers had left for the festival, he went also, not publicly, but in secret. 11 Now at the festival the Jewish leaders were watching for Jesus and asking, “Where is he?” 12 Among the crowds there was widespread whispering about him. Some said, “He is a good man.” Others replied, “No, he deceives the people.” 13 But no one would say anything publicly about him for fear of the leaders. • 4. Temple in Jerusalem (Model) Temple Court John 7:14-24 14 Not until halfway through the festival did Jesus go up to the temple courts and begin to teach. 15 The Jews there were amazed and asked, “How did this man get such learning without having been taught?” 16 Jesus answered, “My teaching is not my own. It comes from the one who sent me. 17 Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own. 18 Whoever speaks on their own does so to gain personal glory, but he who seeks the glory of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him. 19 Has not Moses given you the law? Yet not one of you keeps the law. Why are you trying to kill me?” 20 “You are demon-possessed,” the crowd answered. “Who is trying to kill you?” 21 Jesus said to them, “I did one miracle, and you are all amazed. 22 Yet, because Moses gave you circumcision (though actually it did not come from Moses, but from the patriarchs), you circumcise a boy on the Sabbath. 23 Now if a boy can be circumcised on the Sabbath so that the law of Moses may not be broken, why are you angry with me for healing a man’s whole body on the Sabbath? 24 Stop judging by mere appearances, but instead judge correctly.” Summary of John 7:14-24 • Jesus says that His doctrine comes from God. • Jewish leaders thought theirs did also!! • He responds to their criticism of Sabbath healing of crippled man in John 5. • Jewish priests are violating Sabbath by circumcising on Sabbath. • You have lost the meaning of the Sabbath.
  • 5. John 7:25 – 27 25 At that point some of the people of Jerusalem began to ask, “Isn’t this the man they are trying to kill? 26 Here he is, speaking publicly, and they are not saying a word to him. Have the authorities really concluded that he is the Messiah? 27 But we know where this man is from; when the Messiah comes, no one will know where he is from.” 28 Then Jesus, still teaching in the temple courts, cried out, “Yes, you know me, and you know where I am from. I am not here on my own authority, but he who sent me is true. You do not know him, 29 but I know him because I am from him and he sent me.” • (Jesus tells the crowd and leaders that they do not know God. They thought they were serving God.) John 7: 30 – 32 30 At this they tried to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come. 31 Still, many in the crowd believed in him. They said, “When the Messiah comes, will he perform more signs than this man?” 32 The Pharisees heard the crowd whispering such things about him. Then the chief priests and the Pharisees sent temple guards to arrest him. 33 Jesus said, “I am with you for only a short time, and then I am going to the one who sent me. 34 You will look for me, but you will not find me; and where I am, you cannot come.” 35 The Jews said to one another, “Where does this man intend to go that we cannot find him? Will he go where our people live scattered among the Greeks, and teach the Greeks? 36 What did he mean when he said, ‘You will look for me, but you will not find me,’ and ‘Where I am, you cannot come’?” • Where? Jesus answers in John 14 John 14:1-4 1 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. 2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I am going.” 5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”
  • 6. 6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.” The Last & Greatest Day of the Feast “Day of the Great Hosanan” • Procession through Water Gate with golden vessel to get water at Pool of Siloam repeating Isaiah 12. • 1 In that day you will say: Isaiah 12:1-3 1… 2 3 “I will praise you, Lord. Although you were angry with me, your anger has turned away and you have comforted me. Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid. The Lord, the Lord himself, is my strength and my defense; he has become my salvation.” With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation. Processional to Pool of Siloam
  • 7. Pouring Water from Pool of Siloam • Water poured along with wine into a basin at base of altar singing Psalms 113-118(Hallel) • “Praise the Lord.” • These flowed down a conduit which carried the water/wine to the Brook of Kidron • Raise lulav and etrog and shout “Lift your hands!” • This was the closing ceremony of Feast of Tabernacles Symbolism of Water Pouring Ceremony • Prayer for the Fall rains upon which Israel’s crops depended. • Water which flowed from the rock for Israel in Exodus 17:6. • Pictured the coming of the Messiah and His Kingdom. • The pouring out of the God’s Spirit upon Israel and all nations of believers. John 7:37-39 37 On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, streams (rivers) of living water will flow from within him.” 39 By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified. Message of John 7: 37 “Let anyone who is thirsty ...” • “To thirst” – Recognize your need for God • Only condition is need… to be thirsty • Human soul has thirst for God • Soul has something like physical thirst • You were made to drink God • All scripture is a banquet for your soul • Drink and be satisfied. “If any man thirst …” • Jesus is what satisfies the soul. • What Jesus offers is what will satisfy the soul. • Goal of our ministry as Christians: • Awaken the need of ‘soul thirst’ to non-believers • See Fruit of Spirit in our lives • Point them to the one who can satisfy that need • “Let Others See Jesus In You”
  • 8. “… let him come to me and drink.” • Jesus is what we drink; He is the water. John 6:35 35 Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” • Your soul was made for Jesus only. • Things of life do not satisfy! “… come to me and drink.” • Your soul can drink. • A spiritual action • “Then sings my soul, my Savior God to thee, how great thou art.” • Even if your body cannot move, your soul can eat and drink Jesus. Isaiah 55:1 “Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; ...” John 7:38 “… Whoever believes in me ...” • Coming and drinking are what it means to believe in Jesus. John 6:35 … “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” • Believing is a spiritual coming to Jesus to be satisfied. John 7:38 “… streams of living water will flow from within him.” • You get a spring of water, not just a sip of water. • Rivers (streams) of living water flow out of your soul. “… as the Scriptures said, ...” • All Scripture points to Jesus as Messiah. • Jesus would be the fulfillment of the Feast of Tabernacles. • God had this all planned and timed since the creation of man. Isaiah 58:11 11 The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.
  • 9. John 7:38b – 39 38b “…streams of living water will flow from within him.” 39 By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified. John 7:39 The Future Coming of the Holy Spirit • Fellowship with the risen and glorified Christ could not be known yet. • The atonement for sin had to occur first. John 14:16-17 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. • Jesus is telling them, “It’s me that will be flowing out of you through the Holy Spirit! Responses To Jesus John 7:40-44 40 On hearing his words, some of the people said, “Surely this man is the Prophet.” 41 Others said, “He is the Messiah.” Still others asked, “How can the Messiah come from Galilee? 42 Does not Scripture say that the Messiah will come from David’s descendants and from Bethlehem, the town where David lived?” 43 Thus the people were divided because of Jesus. 44 Some wanted to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him. • Same responses today: Believe; Refuse; Unsure John 7:45-52 Summary • Temple guards refuse to arrest Jesus. • 46 ...”No one ever spoke the way this man does.” • Pharisees determined to discredit and kill Jesus. • Nicodemus assigned task of determining Jesus’ hometown or Galilean ancestry.
