1. A PhD can take twice as long as a bachelor’s degree to complete
2. Professors will exploit you
3. You could drop out (57% completion rate, 10 years after joining)
4. You might end up on government help
5. Academic jobs are hard to find
6. It could cost you
7. You probably will not get tenure (68% in the US are without)
8. Universities would eliminate tenure if they could
9. More than 50% of the faculty are part-timers
10. Jobs can be scarce for PhDs outside academia
11. Difficult to find placement info for PhDs so you don’t know what to expect
12. Unfortunately, you can’t eat prestige
