The following keynote occurred on May of 2018 to the Association of Municipal Administrators of New Brunswick. The Keynote challenges the ideas of how complex innovation has to be and what the consequences of resisting change can be, and why we still do it.

Reasons
You’d Think
01
Traffic and Cost
Boston’s push came on the heels of yet
another delay to their “Big Dig”
underground freeway through the city.
Bikes allowed for easier travel and less
damage to streets and infrastructure.
02
The Environment
Human powered vehicles are renewable,
it improves the health of the citizenship
and the surrounding air quality and
environment.
03
To Look Hip
More and more young professionals are
choosing to live in “walkable” or “bike-
friendly” communities. In order to retain
this in demand demographic communities
take big steps.

Innovation
Innovation can mean a lot of things. The Keurig was
innovative, so was the 100% biodegradable cups that the
first innovation necessitated.

26. The Need For
Innovation
Every person, business and community has a
hierarchy of needs. Whether we realize it or not
we are working to satisfy those needs.
The truth is that in communities like those in
New Brunswick the need for Innovation is even
more essential; however, threats to those
needs are more acutely felt. Whether perceived
or factual.

• Lack of Emotional Empathy
• Disharmony
• Us Vs. Them Mentalities
• Stagnation of Creativity
• Decline in New Jobs

34. The Preconditioning of the human brain to
expect and thus react to something with
preconceived notions and responses.
We are conditioned through our experiences
with film, news and media to assume the worst
about what innovation can bring us.
The truth is however, that these fears are
largely unfounded. Especially for those who
want to move their organizations forward.

42. Why
We Need You
to Embrace
Innovation
The world needs it’s
communities to step
up, and lead by
example. In remote
areas, this is even
more critical.

44. Call to Action
Your Journey has to Start Somewhere
Become the innovator, change
the world, and don’t worry what
the world has to say about.
Do not be afraid to seem a bit
crazy.
