Solar energy provides over 15,000 times the world's annual energy needs and India receives sufficient solar radiation for energy production. Solar energy can be utilized through solar thermal and solar electric methods. India has increased its grid-connected solar capacity to over 7,800 MW and has a goal of 20,000 MW by 2022, 100,000 MW by 2030, and 200,000 MW by 2050 through its National Solar Mission. Gujarat leads India in solar power generation, contributing two-thirds of the country's 900 MW of photovoltaics.

Introduction
Solar energy is the most readily available and free source of
energy since prehistoric times. It is estimated that solar energy
equivalent to over 15,000 times the world's annual commercial
energy consumption reaches the earth every year.
India receives solar energy in the region of 5 to 7 kWh/m2 for
300 to 330 days in a year. This energy is sufficient to set up 20
MW solar power plant per square kilometer land area.
4. 4
Solar energy can be utilised through two different routes.
solar thermal route :-
solar electric (solar photovoltaic) routes
Solar thermal route uses the sun's
heat to produce hot water or air,
cook food, drying materials etc.
Solar photovoltaic uses sun’s heat to produce
electricity for lighting home and building,
running motors, pumps, electric appliances,
and lighting.

(CSP) systems use
A wide range of concentrating technologies exists;
In these systems a working fluid is heated by the
concentrated sunlight, and is then used for power
generation or energy storage
Concentrated solar power
Lenses or mirrors
Tracking systems

Photovoltaic
A solar cell, or photovoltaic cell (PV), is a device that converts
light into electric current using the photoelectric effect

April 2016 the installed grid connected solar power had increased to 7805.00 MW
India is ranked number one in terms of solar energy production per watt installed.
Gujarat has been a leader in solar power generation and contributes 2/3rd of the
900 MW of photovoltaics in the country.
National Solar Mission in India
Make India a global leader in solar energy and the mission envisages an
installed solar generation capacity of 20,000 MW by 2022, 1,00,000 MW by
2030 and of 2,00,000 MW by 2050.
The total expected investment required for the 30-year period will run is
from Rs. 85,000 crore to Rs. 105,000 crore.
Between 2017 and 2020, the target is to achieve tariff parity with
conventional grid power and achieve an installed capacity of 20 gigawatts
(Gw) by 2020.
4-5GW of installed solar manufacturing capacity by 2017.

Future Investments Related to Solar Projects
•Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has allocated Rs 500 crore in Budget
2014 to push ultra-modern solar power projects in Rajasthan, Tamil
Nadu and Ladakh.
•Solar power panels will become cheaper as solar power gear makers
will have to pay lower tax.
•Solar power equipment makers will have to pay lower excise duty on
solar cells, modules and batteries, among other products.
•The government wants to reduce the power utilities' subsidy burden
on electricity distribution to farm sector, which consumes 23 per cent
of power consumption in India but accounts for only 7 per cent of the
revenues.
•India has set a target of commissioning 20,000 mw of solar power
projects by 2022.
