En cuanto a la ganadería, según información del IGAC y Corpoica (2002), 40 millones de hectáreas se destinan a esta actividad en el país, a pesar de que la vocación para esta actividad es de 10 millones de hectáreas . Murgueitio (1998) menciona que los principales impactos de la ganadería a nivel de la biodiversidad se relacionan con: "l a tala y la quema de bosques, la erosión y compactación del suelo; la uniformidad genética al privilegiarse el monocultivo de gramíneas mediante quemas estacionales y eliminación de la sucesión vegetal por medios químicos (herbicidas) o físicos; la desecación de humedales; la construcción de vías de penetración; la demanda creciente de madera para cercos, corrales de manejo y camiones ganaderos; la contaminación del agua y el suelo por fertilizantes sintéticos y plaguicidas, así como las emisiones de gases producidas por la quema de combustibles en el transporte terrestre y fluvial de animales vivos o sus productos".
