2. Keith Mestrich is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Amalgamated Bank and brings with
him 25 years of experience working with the bank’s core constituencies in the labor movement and
nonprofit organizations. Keith is in the forefront of a movement that encourages unions and
nonprofits to build wealth for a purpose, not just for a profit. Under his leadership, this year,
Amalgamated Bank raised the minimum wage of all their employees to at least $15 an hour.
Previously, Keith advocated for the rights of working people as the Chief Financial Officer and
Deputy Chief of Staff for SEIU and as an organizer for the AFL-CIO and UNITE. Keith is currently
on the Board of Directors and serves as Treasurer of the Union Health Center in New York City and
the DC Employment Justice Center. He is also on the Board of Directors of the National Consumers
League, The Roosevelt Institute, Democracy Alliance, The Workers Lab, The Public Utility Law
Project, and the Remember the Triangle Fire Coalition.
We are proud to be honoring Keith and Amalgamated Bank for their leadership in the Fight for $15
and in recognition of our historic partnership. Together, the Workmen’s Circle and Amalgamated
(first as the Amalgamated Clothing Workers Union and later as Amalgamated Bank) formed a
cohesive community for working class immigrant families in the nineteen twenties and thirties in
the Amalgamated Housing Projects in the Bronx. Today, the values we share continue to provide a
strong, vibrant basis for progressive engagement that nurtures the next generation of innovative
thinkers and activists.
