Principle
• An inductive sensor generates a magnetic field with an oscillator
• When a metallic object is placed in this field, oscillations stop
• Function of oscillations an output signal normally open (NO)
or normally closed (NC) contact is generated
Advantages
• High operating rates; fast response
• Detection of all metals
• Excellent resistance to industrial environments
• Solid-state technology: no moving parts
8. Telemecanique Sensors – May 2016 8

XS proximity sensors
Technologies
• Detection of all metals (Fe, Al, Cu, etc.) without
contacts (no touch)
• High operating rates, fast response time, and no wear
due to solid state technology for output
• Excellent resistance to industrial environments
+
• Detects only metal objects
• Short sensing distance -> 60 mm-

Overview — Inductive sensors
Inductive proximity sensors are used solely for the detection
of metallic objects. Their range of application is very extensive and includes:
• Mainly monitoring the position of machine parts
• Also detecting the presence of metallic objects

Technical key points — Sensing distance
• Sensing distance
• Is directly linked to the size of the sensing face
• Nominal sensing distance Sn
• The rated operating distance for which
the sensor has been designed
• Assured sensing distance Sa
• This is the operating zone of the sensor
(in general 0.81 of Sn)
• Sensing distance is always given
for a steel standard metal target
• For all other metal than steel or small target
we must take into account a correction coefficient
Up to 60 mm
Up to 2.5 mm
80 mm
Ø 8 mm

11
Technical key points — Mounting sensor on a metal support
• Sensors not suitable for flush
mounting in metal
• Side clearance required
• Sensing distance greater than that for a standard flush
mountable model X2
• Sensors suitable for flush mounting in metal
• No side clearance required
• Schneider Electric offers a standard flush-mountable
model without reducing the sensing distance X1 or X2
• And a range of flush-adaptable models that enable
the detection of an object against a metal background
• Simple or double (X1 or X2) sensing distance
• It's the customer's choice
12. Telemecanique Sensors – May 2016 12
12
Technical key points — Electrical function
• Output function
• Normally open (NO)
- Corresponds to a sensor whose output changes
to the closed state when an object is present
in the operating zone
• Normally closed (NC)
- Corresponds to a sensor whose output changes
to the open state when an object is present
in the operating zone
• Complementary outputs (NO + NC)
- Corresponds to a sensor with a normally
closed output and a normally open output
13. Telemecanique Sensors – May 2016 13
13
Technical key points — Output function
• 2-wire type DC or AC
• NO or NC nonpolarized output
• 3-wire type DC
• NO or NC output, PNP or NPN
• 4-wire type DC
• NO and NC complementary outputs, PNP or NPN
• 4-wire type DC
• NO or NC programmable output, PNP + NPN
• Specific output signals, analog type

How to choose an inductive sensor?
1. Choose a body according to environment and sensing distance
• Place to install and request sensing distance (Sn)
- Size of product (dimensions and material)
- Pay special attention to the mounting in support (flush or nonflush)
2. Choose the electrical function
• According the automatism function to achieve
- NO, NC, NO+NC, analog, etc.
• According to the "load" compatibility (contactor, PLC, etc.)
- DC 3 wires PNP, NPN, DC, or AC/DC 2 wires
3. Choose the electrical connection according to habits (geographical use)
• Cable, connector, and screw clamp terminals
