XC — Limit switches
• Principle
• The target acts on a mechanical contact via
a command lever
• Depending on the position of the lever, the contact
will be actuated or not
• Advantages
• Suitable for targets that will not deform, regardless
of shape, type, composition, or color
• Rugged products
• Intuitive and easy product installation

XC limit switches
Technologies
• Detection of all solid object by contact
• Intuitive and easy to install
• Dry contact and positive opening contact+
• Head could be blocked with external materials
(chips, sawdust, etc.)
• Slow actuation speed (< 1.5 m/s)
• Low operating rates due to mechanical contact (~ 1 Hz)
wear of contact

Limit switch overview
Limit switches are used in all automated installations and also in a
wide variety of applications due to the numerous advantages
inherent in their technology.
Limit switches transmit data to the automation system regarding:
• Presence/absence of objects
• Objects passing a defined location
• Objects in the correct position
• Objects reaching the end of travel

• OsiSense XC

Technical key points — Head
• Three types of detection movements
• More than 50 different heads

• Linear movement
(plunger)
• Rotary movement
(lever)
• Multidirectional
movement
11. Telemecanique Sensors – May 2016 11
Technical key points — Contacts
• Snap actions contacts
• Are characterized by different tripping and reset points
(differential travel)
• The displacement speed of the moving contacts is not
related to the speed of the operator
• This feature ensures satisfactory electrical performance
in applications involving low speed actuators
Example: NC (normally closed) + NO (normally open)
• A: Maximum travel of the operator in millimeters
or degrees.
• B: Tripping travel of contact
• C: Resetting travel of contact
• D: Differential travel = B - C
• P: Point from which positive opening is assured

12. Telemecanique Sensors – May 2016 12
Technical key points — Contacts
• Slow break contacts
• Are characterized by identical tripping and
resetting points
• The displacement speed of the moving contacts
is equal or proportional to the speed of the
operator (which must not be less than
1 m/s = 6 m/minute)
• The opening distance is dependent on the
distance travelled by the operator
Example: NC + NO break before make
• A: Maximum travel of the operator in millimeters
or degrees
• B: Tripping and resetting travel of contact 21 – 22
• C: Tripping and resetting travel of contact 13 – 14
• P: Point from which positive opening is assured

How to choose the right product
1. Choose a body according to the environment
• Place to install and duty requested
o Size product and material
2. Choose a head according the "object" to detect
• The detection movement type linear, rotary, multidirectional
• After the adapted plunger, lever, spring rod, or cat whisker
3. Choose the contact according to the automatism function to achieve
• Snap or slow; 2, 3, or 4 contacts; NO + NC, etc.
4. Choose the electrical connection according to habits
(geographical use)
