Sea Change aims to bring about a fundamental
“Sea Change” in the way European citizens view
their relationship with the sea.
It does this by empowering them – as ‘Ocean
Literate’ citizens - to take direct and sustainable
action towards healthy seas and ocean, healthy
communities and ultimately - a healthy planet.
TITLE: SEA CHANGE
PROGRAMME: Horizon 2020
TOPIC: BG-13-2014: Ocean literacy –
Engaging with society – Social Innovation
TOTAL BUDGET: €3.5 million
DURATION: 36 months
COORDINATOR: The Marine Biological Association of the
United Kingdom (MBA)
CONSORTIUM: 17 partners from 9 different countries
Ocean Literacy for Empowered Citizens
“Ocean Literacy” - an understanding of the
ocean’s influence on us and our influence
on the ocean.
An Ocean-Literate person:
• Understands the importance of the ocean to humankind
• Can communicate about the ocean in a meaningful way
• Is able to make informed and responsible decisions regarding
the ocean and its resources
How will Sea Change achieve its goals?
1. EMPOWER educators, students and educational communities
to help integrate and promote Ocean Literacy principles.
2. PROMOTE responsible behaviour of citizens towards the
ocean and its resources.
3. ENGAGE in a dialogue with key actors of the international
marine governance system on the link between human health
and the health of the ocean in order to improve decision
making and policy development (both in Europe and the
transatlantic context).
How will Sea Change achieve its goals?
4. COLLABORATE with transatlantic partners in order to bring
about a global approach to protecting the planet’s shared
ocean.
5. ENSURE that efforts to sustain an Ocean Literate society in
Europe continue beyond the life of Sea Change through codes
of good practice, public campaigns and other ongoing
community activities.
6. CREATE a resource relating to the links between the planet’s
ocean and human health.
WP3 – Education and Lifelong Learning
Outputs
• Consultation in 8 EU countries on the ‘barriers’ to teaching OL
• Online directory of marine best practice
• Two e-books on cold water corals and harmful algal blooms
• Coderdojo gaming competition ‘Future Ocean’
• Development of Blue schools in collaboration with FEE
• Marine teacher training MOOC
• Online seminars
• Development of the EMSEA network
Legacy & Impact
Work Package 6 – Sea Change Legacy
Objective: To build on the project activities, their outputs and
impacts with a view to ensure there is a legacy to Sea Change
beyond the project duration and to improve Ocean Literacy of
European citizens so that they can become more active actors of
change to help protect the seas and ocean.
Work Package 8 – Impact Evaluation
Objective: To develop and implement an evaluation programme
to measure the impact of activities carried out within the
project, and establish a framework to evaluate wider impacts
beyond the project lifetime.

  • 1. 11th Scientix Projects Networking Event Fiona Crouch (Marine Biological Association), Sea Change Project Manager
  • 2. Sea Change aims to bring about a fundamental “Sea Change” in the way European citizens view their relationship with the sea. It does this by empowering them – as ‘Ocean Literate’ citizens - to take direct and sustainable action towards healthy seas and ocean, healthy communities and ultimately - a healthy planet.
  • 3. TITLE: SEA CHANGE PROGRAMME: Horizon 2020 TOPIC: BG-13-2014: Ocean literacy – Engaging with society – Social Innovation TOTAL BUDGET: €3.5 million DURATION: 36 months COORDINATOR: The Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom (MBA) CONSORTIUM: 17 partners from 9 different countries
  • 4. Ocean Literacy for Empowered Citizens “Ocean Literacy” - an understanding of the ocean’s influence on us and our influence on the ocean. An Ocean-Literate person: • Understands the importance of the ocean to humankind • Can communicate about the ocean in a meaningful way • Is able to make informed and responsible decisions regarding the ocean and its resources
  • 5. How will Sea Change achieve its goals? 1. EMPOWER educators, students and educational communities to help integrate and promote Ocean Literacy principles. 2. PROMOTE responsible behaviour of citizens towards the ocean and its resources. 3. ENGAGE in a dialogue with key actors of the international marine governance system on the link between human health and the health of the ocean in order to improve decision making and policy development (both in Europe and the transatlantic context).
  • 6. How will Sea Change achieve its goals? 4. COLLABORATE with transatlantic partners in order to bring about a global approach to protecting the planet’s shared ocean. 5. ENSURE that efforts to sustain an Ocean Literate society in Europe continue beyond the life of Sea Change through codes of good practice, public campaigns and other ongoing community activities. 6. CREATE a resource relating to the links between the planet’s ocean and human health.

WP3 – Education and Lifelong Learning Outputs • Consultation in 8 EU countries on the ‘barriers’ to teaching OL • Online directory of marine best practice • Two e-books on cold water corals and harmful algal blooms • Coderdojo gaming competition ‘Future Ocean’ • Development of Blue schools in collaboration with FEE • Marine teacher training MOOC • Online seminars • Development of the EMSEA network

Legacy & Impact Work Package 6 – Sea Change Legacy Objective: To build on the project activities, their outputs and impacts with a view to ensure there is a legacy to Sea Change beyond the project duration and to improve Ocean Literacy of European citizens so that they can become more active actors of change to help protect the seas and ocean. Work Package 8 – Impact Evaluation Objective: To develop and implement an evaluation programme to measure the impact of activities carried out within the project, and establish a framework to evaluate wider impacts beyond the project lifetime.
