The case to be discussed will be as follows: Ms. Marisela Sanchez is a widowed 58-year-old Nicaraguan woman, who is an immigrant, and has lived in Miami for ten years. She lives in a second floor walk-up apartment with her daughter and son-in-law and their four children in Hialeah. Her son-in-law, who is the sole breadwinner, lost his job five months ago. They are two months behind in rent and can barely afford to pay for food and utilities. About a month ago, Ms. Sanchez's daughter found a job as a custodian in a daycare center. She was laid-off, though, after two weeks, for being constantly late to work due to lack of transportation. One of Ms. Sanchez's granddaughters, Leana, is 6 years old and was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. Though she is uninsured, she has benefitted from home therapy services in the past and is now experiencing problems with communication in the home and school settings. Ideally, the family would like to continue therapy services, but they can no longer afford them. Ms. Sanchez, also a month ago, suffered a stroke and was hospitalized for five days. Because she has no health insurance, she is worried about her hospital bill and is unsure where to pursue primary care followup. On discharge, the hospital social worker gave her a list of several community health centers and other programs in Miami-Dade County, but she cannot decide. Part of her concern is that she is undocumented. The family hears of a health fair in Hialeah and brings Ms. Sanchez to the event, hoping to get some advice. You are part of an interdisciplinary team of students staffing a health-screening booth. Your team notices that she is able to walk slowly with a wide- based quad cane. As she answers your questions, she lets you now that she has fallen twice since discharge, without significant injury, and informs you that she has diabetes and high blood pressure. She takes oral medications, but she is getting worried. She reports that she sometimes feels like food gets caught in her throat and sometimes coughs when she drinks. She tells you she does not check her blood sugars at home, because she does not feel comfortable pricking her finger. When you calculate her BMI, it is 33 . The objectives of the exercise are to: 1. Practice team dynamics through case work. 2. Identify the social determinants related to patient health. 3. Provide an opportunity for reflection on team processes that emerge from interdisciplinary casework. Student learning outcomes for the exercise are to: 1. Demonstrate effective team dynamics through casework. 2. Integrate social determinants of health into team-based approach. 3. Describe at least two components of group process demonstrated in the interdisciplinary case discussion you participated in..

the answers are 1.utilitarianism 2.respect for nature 3. animal rights A. Many places that humans greatly value or enjoy visiting would be off limits if they are also use by individual non-human animals who may be impacted, hurt, or killed by human presence. B. Certain species may be considered more important than others or prioritized over other species. To some extent, in this perspective, the importance of a species to ecosystem functioning influences how humans 'should' intervene in the environment. C. Prioritizing individual animals requires radical changes to the ways we currently interact with animals, across agriculture, pet ownership, conservation, etc. This would be difficult to implement and have far reaching impacts. D. It can be difficult to compare and weigh different types and degrees of harm involving animals, especially when moving from the individual to the population and/or species. E. Prioritizing animals as individuals may mean losing more species to extinction, since this perspective prefers individual animals to be free in the wild even if raising and caring for some individuals in captivity could benefit the species population numbers. F. Some individuals may still be harmed or forced to pay the price for what is deemed "good" or the "best" outcome possible overall. 6. Determining the "best outcome" or how to "limit suffering" can be difficult to assess. Some stakeholders do not get an informed say (e.g, animals or people who may not know conservation decisions are being made). H. An introduced species, which may thrive in an environment, may have to be removed or killed to return the ecosystem to a "normal" or "natural" state. In acdition it isn't always clear what version of a "natural state" we ought to return to..

The amphibian populations in Lake X have been observed to be declining in recent years. Anthropogenic factors were suspected and an investigation was initiated to collect information in the area around Lake X as well as similar ecosystems in other locations the state of New York. In addition to Lake X, 30 other lakes were studied. Species abundance in the aquatic, sediment, and terrestrial habitat were surveyed. Human activities around the areas of each lake were evaluated. Chemical analyses of both environmental and biota samples were conducted and pathological analyses were carried out on selected species within each site. The preliminary results are listed below. Please examine the results and determine what kind of implications or preliminary prediction/hypothesis you can make to identify the most probably reason for the decline of amphibian populations in Lake X. Each subsequent line of evidence should be evaluated together with all previous ones 1. (Example) Among the 30 lakes examined, decrease in amphibian populations was only observed in 18 lakes that receives discharges from waste water treatment plants. In addition to amphibians, decrease in fish populations was also reported in 15 of the 18 lakes. Chemical herbicides have been routinely applied in 17 of the 18 lakes for invasive aquatic plant control and the chemicals are known to be toxic to fish. Their toxicity to amphibians is unclear. In comparison, no decline in fish populations was observed in Lake X. History of herbicide applications in Lake X is not available. There is no direct waste water discharge into Lake X but one of the tributaries does receive waste water from a nearby town. Both the herbicide and contaminants in the waste water are considered potential causes for the decline of amphibians in these lakes. Since the fish in Lake X did not seem to have been affect, herbicide may not have been used, or at least not as frequently, as the lakes with fish population declines. 2. Compared to lakes that neither receive waste water discharge nor herbicide treatment, relatively fewer number of fish species were spotted in contaminated lakes. Species that are more tolerant to environmental toxicants dominated the contaminated lakes. Similar patterns were observed in sediment and terrestrial species in/around these lakes. 3. Amphibians in the 18 contaminated lakes are dominated by adult individuals compared to uncontaminated lakes, where individuals of both adults and juveniles were observed. In Lake X, adults appeared healthy, and their average bodyweight is slightly higher than those in the contaminated lakes. 4. Pathology studies revealed that fish in all lakes that received herbicide treatment exhibit lesions similar to those seen in fish exposed to herbicides under laboratory conditions. Adult amphibians in contaminated lakes had significantly enlarged liver which is a general indicator for exposure to toxicants. However, adult amphibians in Lake X did not exhibit any pat.

the answers are 1.utilitarianism 2.respect for nature 3. animal rights A.
