2. RAJA RAO ‘s novel
KAMTHAPURA is most powerful
of the portraying the impact of
the Gandhian
Movement on the Indian people.
GANDHI’s civil movement comes
to this remote scheduled village.
Raja Rao,s first and best-known
novel, kanthapura(1938), is the
story of a south Indian village
named kanthapura… after this,
moorthy starts living with an
widow, Rangamma, who is active
in india’s independence
movement.
3. About Moorthy
Moorthy is a respected, college-educated young man, one of
thousands inspired by gandhi to fight for the cause of their
motherland. Supposedly, he attends a public meeting in
college and leads up on stage to meet gandhi, who then
encourages him to go back to his village and help the common
people. however, this event is presented secondhand by the
novel’s narrator, and so it is ambiguous whether this meeting
actually look place or was merely a vision in moorthy’s mind
moorthy then returns to kanthapura and explains to the
villagers the significance of gandhi’s struggle for
independence. Throughout the novel moorthy acts as gandhi’s
spokesman for the village, fasting and preaching against the
caste system. Ultimately, he acquires the villagers love, respect
, and confidence , and the villagers in turn continue their
protests after arrested. In the
4. MOORTHY the central
character, a young educated
man, comes from the city
with the message of
MAHATMA.
MOORTHY goes from door
to door, even the to the
PARIAH quarter of the
village the significance of the
gandhiji’s struggle for
freedom.
5. MOORTHY is progressive enough to go to pariah quarter,
eat with them and talk with the pariah.
But , after every interaction with the pariahs, when he
wants to enter RANGAMMA’s house he asks her whether
he could get into her house as has come out of pariah hut.
RANGAMMA asks him to purify himself with Ganga water
meekly follows her instruction and only after purifying
with his SACRED thread with Ganga water
Then he enter in house.
6. MOORTHY who is until than a strong follower of
GANDHI, to response his faith in Gandhian
ideologies.
He loses strength to continue loving under
Gandhism and face and brutal music of the British
government.
He burnt foreign clothes and stared using KHADI.
7. The women of kanthapura decide generally to
back Gandhi and stay him even when moorthy
who had commonly to back Gandhi and stay with
him even when moorthy who had initiated them
to Gandhism moves away .
There women have reached a stage where they
require such as moorthy to reach Gandhi.
8. Thus we can say that the
outstanding personality
of the village so far as this
narration is concerned
moorthy the followers of
Gandhiji.
The story is narrated in
flashback by ‘Achakka’.
Moorthy worked for the
upliftment of the
‘pariahs’ as gandhi
helped the ‘harijans’.
Moorthy was arrested
many a times but
everytime he behave like
Gandhiji.
