Why Pipeline Operators Need Dogs
Pipelines can become susceptible to
damage as they age, and any impairment
can cause a leak.
Many pipeline operators rely on online
systems to alert them of leaks, but the
technology can’t detect more than 1
percent of pipeline flow.
It becomes very expensive when
pipeline operators have to add
complimentary detection methods in
addition to the online systems, and even
with those complimentary methods, Oil
and Gas Technology said dogs are
probably still more reliable in detecting
leaks.

One of the advantages of using detection dogs for oil
and gas leaks is their capability of smelling even parts
per billion in comparison with the detection of parts per
million using the most state-of-the-art equipment,”
Guido Van Baelen, chief operation officer of The
Sniffer’s dog division, told Oil & Gas Technology.
In addition to being more reliable, dogs are also more
efficient. Bill Allen, founder of OutWest Canine
Consulting, explained to LPGas that if oil and gas
companies don’t use dogs, their only choice is to
excavate or expose the pipe after a pipeline fails a
pressure test.
The Canadian Energy Pipeline Association said that
because dogs are so quick to detect leaks, they can help
pipeline operators act quicker to prevent hazardous
substances from seeping into nearby farms or bodies of
water.

London-based energy company Penspen, in
association with Newcastle University in the U.K.,
began researching dogs’ reliability in pipeline leak
detection in 2007.
In one study, Blitzen, a black Labrador retriever,
proved his ability to tell the difference between
multiple types of hydrocarbons. In another, a German
longhaired pointer named Wallace was able to sniff out
leaks as small as 5mL buried up to 800 mm.
Wallace had an 86 percent success rate in detecting
leaks.
Penspen’s research also determined that dogs can be
taught to distinguish between as many as 10 different
odors.

Now there are even pipeline leak detection
companies that use dogs as their primary
investigative method, including Pipe Dogs Inc.
and K9 Pipeline Leak Detection LLC.
According to the latter’s website, its dogs can
work in temperatures ranging from 32 to 95
degrees.
They also participate in an intensive 6-week
training program. Both companies use at least
two dogs for every job.
Damage Prevention Professional declared that
an ideal method for pipeline leak detection is
utilizing a dog’s sense of smell in conjunction
with current mapping technologies.
Human’s best friend is proving to be an
invaluable asset and potential life saver.

The canine olfactory system consists of soft tissue, bones, nerves,
and parts of the brain. The soft tissue and bony structures make up
the cavities into which odor particles flow.
These cavities are lined with scent receptor cells which connect
to olfactory nerves that connect with the olfactory lobe of the
dog's brain.
Dogs have large folds of mucous membranes inside their nose
containing more than 200 million scent receptors compared to
smaller areas of mucous membranes containing about 4 million in
humans.
Their olfactory bulbs are also about 4 times larger than ours.
Their noses are also uniquely designed to draw air samples
through — They can even smell a few parts per billion, where
the most sophisticated equipment can only measure parts per
Million.

LEAK DETECTION WITH TÜV-CERTIFIED DOGS
Using our TÜV-certified sniffing dogs for leak detection has unique advantages.
The 2 main reasons for incidents and disruption of continuous supply remain excavation damage to the pipeline and
corrosion of the steel pipes. The goal of this industry remains zero leakage. The main challenges of hydrocarbon leak
detection in the pipelines come from the underground installation and the long distances involved.
Detecting leaks at an early stage is thus crucial to guarantee both the quality and the continuity of your pipeline
infrastructure.
The Sniffers is helping its customers in addition to the full spectrum of possible detection services with our own
TÜV-certified dogs for gas and oil leaks, illegal pipeline tapping and the detection of electrical short circuits.
Almost all underground pipelines are accessible for our sniffing dogs; a dog’s mobility brings its nose above pipelines
in rural areas, through woods, crossing mountains and through fields with dense vegetation. Many measuring
instruments cannot be used in these circumstances at an acceptable pace.
We rely on 25 years of experience in leak detection to detect the smallest leaks but also gas or oil treated water.

Richard Eckles is President and Founder of Pipe Dogs Inc., an
oil & gas pipeline leak detection company.
He is a retired U.S. Navy veteran. His experience was as a
Military Working Dog explosive/narcotic detector dog handler,
trainer, and kennel master.
Knowing first hand the dogs’ exceptional detection capabilities,
he saw a great chance to bring those capabilities to the oil & gas
industry. Richard knows that a dog’s ability to detect parts per
billion/trillion (PPB/PPT) make dogs a great choice for leak
detection.

Ron Mistafa, Owner
Detector Dog Services International Ltd.
DDSI employs specially trained dogs that are able to detect actual leaks to an
accuracy of less than half a metre. Unlike mechanical devices, the pipeline leak
detection success rate of healthy, properly trained DDSI dogs is 100%.
DDSI dogs are much more versatile. A single dog can be trained to detect
thousands of relevant substances.
A DDSI dog is a lot more portable and has its own built-in locomotion system.
DDSI can be on the job in a shorter period of time at a much lower cost.
DDSI services are not only more accurate, they're a lot more cost-effective.
The bottom line: DDSI can save you a tremendous amount of time and money
compared to using leak-detection equipment.
