EDU: 810-TRENDS AND ISSUES
Life skill has been classified into three broad categories:
Thinking skills:
 Thinking skills are the skill that enhances the logical faculty of the
brain using an analytical ability, thinking creatively and critically,
and developing problem-solving skills and improving decision-
making abilities.
Social skills:
 Social skills include interpersonal skills, communication skills,
leadership skills, management skills, advocacy skills, co-operation
and team building skills, etc.
Emotional skills:
 Emotional skills, involves, knowing and being comfortable with
oneself. Thus, self–management, including managing/coping with
feelings, emotions, stress and resisting peer and family pressure.
11. CORE LIFE SKILLS

2. Decision Making
3. Critical Thinking
4. Creative Thinking
5. Communication Skills
6. Self-Awareness
7. Stress Management
8. Empathy
9. Interpersonal Relationship
10. Dealing with Emotions
11. Problem-Solving
The strong belief refers to the attitudes towards spiritual
aspects of religion.
Allah has created man for a specific purpose. The
purpose of man is superior than man and superior to man
is GOD.
Our religious beliefs are our views on religious matters.
In beliefs we live and we move. The beliefs constitute the
base of our life.
All our conduct, including the intellectual life, depends
on the system of our authentic beliefs.
 Abilities to assess available
options
• To foresee the consequences
of different decisions
(actions/non-actions)
 Nodecision is alsoadecision
2. What Is Decision Making?
• Abilities to assess availableoptions
• To foresee the consequences ofdifferent
decisions (actions/non-actions)
• No decision is also a decision
Critical thinking is an ability to analyze information
and experiences in an objective manner.
 Critical thinking can contribute to health by helping
us to recognize and assess the factors that influence
attitudes and behavior, such as values, peer pressure,
and themedia.
 Creative thinking is a novel
way of seeing or doing things
that is characteristic of four
components – fluency
(generating new ideas),
flexibility (shifting perspective
easily), originality (conceiving
of something new), and
elaboration (building on other
ideas).
Effective communication
means that we are able to
express ourselves, both
verbally and non-verbally, in
ways that are appropriate to
our cultures and situations.
This means being able to
express opinions and
desires, but also needs and
fears. And it may mean
being able to ask for advice
and help in a time of need.
 Self-awareness includes recognition of ‘self’, our
character, our strengths and weaknesses, desires and
dislikes. Developing self-awareness can help us to
recognize when we are stressed or feel under
pressure. It is often a prerequisite to effective
communication and interpersonal relations, as well
as for developing empathy with others.

It means recognizing the
source of stress in our
lives, recognizing how
stress affects us and acting
in ways that help us
control these levels of
stress by changing our
environment or lifestyle
and by learning how to
relax
It is the ability to understand what
life is like for another person, even
in a situation with which we may
not be familiar.
• Empathy help to accept others who
vary from us.
• This can improve social interactions
• Empathy encourage the adoption of
nurturing attitude towards people in
need of care and assistance
• It helps us to relate in positive ways with the people
with whom we interact.
• This means being able to maintain friendly relations
with family, friends and colleagues, which can be of
great important source of social support.
• It also means being able to end relationships
constructively without bitterness and anger.
It means recognizing our emotions as
well as those of others, being aware of
how emotions influence behavior, and
being able to respond to emotions
appropriately. Intense emotions like
anger or sadness can have an effect on
our health if we do not respond
appropriately
 Problem solving enables us to deal
constructively with problems in our lives.
Significant problems that are left unresolved
can cause mental stress and give rise to
accompanying physical strain.
Life skills education contributes to:
 Basic education;
 Gender equality;
 Democracy;
 Good citizenship;
 Quality and efficiency of the education system;
 The promotion of lifelong learning;
 Quality of life;
 The promotion of peace.
 The promotion of healthy child and adolescent development;
 Primary prevention of some key causes of child and adolescent
death, disease and disability; Socialization;
 Preparing young people for changing social circumstances.
 It is suggested that to make students familiar with
life skill education, we should teach about:
 Share facts about brain
 Goals are good, pressure is not
 Making space for failure
 Adress lacking skills
 Listen more than you talk
The life skills education
plays crucial role towards
the positive and healthy
development of the
adolescent, to come up with
new ideas and cope up with
the various situations, which
comes in day-to-day life.
