Facial Emotions
• Micro-expressions last a split second – video camera &
people catch it.
–Maintain positive emotions: happy, surprise, and calm
–Avoid negative emotions: angry, sad, confused, or fear.
–AI allows us to split your video into 1/30th of a frame in one

Eye Contact
• When speaking, maintain frequent eye contact. It demonstrates
confidence, engagement and the listener trusts you more.
• Make sure you are looking straight ahead at the camera and not
on the side at the people on the video call.
• While listening to others:
– Don’t look at your mobile.
– Don’t do email.
– Don’t open other web browsers.
– Don’t take another call.
– Don’t read papers or documents.
All of this is visible to others.

Head Movement
• If you don’t move your head, you look stiff, less confident, and anxious.
• If you move your head while talking, you engage your
audience.
• On a video call while listening, a nod of approval or slight head shake
demonstrate that you are listening.
• Though too much head movement can be distracting.

Hand Movement
• For video calls, your hands are generally not very visible.
• If you use your hands a lot, reduce it. The other person gets distracted
because it is too close to your face and upper body. Use only below
your shoulders.
• Lock hands if you need to or keep them on the desk.

• Placement of camera – eye level or slightly higher.
• Laptop/camera position should be one arms length away from you.
• Sit up straight and look attentive. Don’t slouch in your chair or bend over.
• Make it a flattering camera angle. Tip screen down.
• Avoid fidgeting with your ear, hair, nose, etc.
• If paid version of Zoom, can record your call. Allows you to focus on the
screen rather than writing and see how you looked later.

• 120 to 160 words per minute.
• Match the rate of speech of the other person.
• Slow down your rate of speech with international audiences. Enunciate
your words more by opening your mouth larger to improve your diction.
• If you speak too fast, use Period Pause at the end of each sentence
to slow you down.
• Vary your rate of speech periodically to keep it interesting. Try this
speaking exercise:
– Tiger/Elephant Caricatures – draw in transcript
• Tiger when you want to go faster and demonstrate excitement.
• Elephant when you want to slow down and emphasize a point to
make it more meaningful.

• Bumble Bee exercise
– Make a sound like a bumble bee up and down the piano in 6 to
8 seconds.
– Comes with time and practice.

your vocal chords.

• Balloon Exercise – Breath in deeply through your nose and slowly
exhale with the sound of shhh shh shhh shhh shhh…

– Feel your stomach almost touch your spine.

– Think of smelling your favorite flower.

• Try sitting up straight, standing or walking if possible. Will make

What is the sentiment (positive, negative, neutral) of the text?

Answer:
Negative sentiment because of negative opening line and passive phrases
and passive voice.
For example, in the opening line is a closed ended question, and gives the
right for the other person to refuse which sets a negative tone.
Second, it uses passive words/voice such as “I was only”, “It would be”,
“Hope it is not too much of an inconvenience.” “That is not my intention.”

It is not that you have to become a creative writer, even a few word changes can make all the
difference in text emotion.

• Your sentences should be between 5 to 20 words.
• Good to periodically vary the length.
• If longer than 20 words, get rid of redundant
words.
Example, redundant words are highlighted in
blue. Only one word is needed.
The fact that the vast majority of citizens like

Elevator Speech Format
1. What it’s about?
2. Why it’s important? (e.g. clear, specific, impact on business or
customer, be quantitative) Position this from the person’s view.
3. What would success look like in the future when we achieve it? (e.g.
clear, specific, action based vision). Describe in the future when you
achieved what you wanted what people will be doing, saying, feeling,
etc. This is a visual picture of the future that you want to create after
doing it. This is a not a list of benefits. Instead, a description of how the
future would look, feel and sound.
4. What specifically do you want this person to do? (e.g. mention in a
review, attend a call, approve a budget, give you 30 minutes to discuss
it in more detail, convince some other people, empower you with
authority, etc.)

1. Every year, the Association of Talent Development (ATD) has an international
convention with more than 10,000 participants including 6,000 international delegates
from over 70 countries. This year the convention is virtual in September. This
conference has workshops on the latest areas of learning and development, and
includes legendary speakers like Marshal Goldsmith, Ken Blanchard and many other
things.
2. By having one person in our team attend virtually, it will help us in four ways:

• New content for internal soft skills courses
• Understand microlearning better and how we can leverage it in our business.

Technique #2 – Dress Appropriately
• Avoid pajamas/night clothes/t-shirts on the bottom.
• Wear pretty colors that look good on you. A blazer with a shirt can look very
professional, depending on the call.
• Try different hair styles. No ponytails or braids. Neat and tidy.
• Wear close fitting close that hug your body. Dress as the normal you which is
appropriate for your industry.
• Extra makeup for women. It disappears on camera.
• Frame your best features. Lipstick is important.
• Teeth and eyes should look good.
• Nice to wear a necklace and earrings. No bangles though.
• If eyes are puffy, rinse with water beforehand.

Technique #4 – Background
• Avoid a distracting background.
– Some people find a changed background as unauthentic and
decreases your trust.
– Others like it because you can hide your mess, join from a
public space, etc.
– Some find it adds fun and lightness to the call.
– Preferably, have a blank white wall behind you or a none
distracting wall.
– Share only the relevant presentation/file and avoid sharing
your desktop which includes other things, email, documents etc.

Technique #5 – Lighting
• Avoid backlighting – a light behind the chair or next to the
chair.
• Avoid top down lighting side light, or direct lighting.
• Avoid light underneath you. Avoid fluorescent lights.
• Want lighting on your full face.
• Soft diffused natural sunlight the best unless too bright,
then turn down the window shades to reduce then
brightness.
• Short ring lights are good. Or standing light in front of your
desk facing you. Window in front of your desk. Or light in
front of your desk.
• Use a TV with a white background which adds light too.

• Try taking your mobile around the house to find the best
lighting. If you can change up the location.

Technique #6 – Have Good Sound Quality
• Use a headset or good earphone/mic set.
Makes a big difference in what you and
they hear.
• Turn off the fan. (And, not in your
picture too)
• Inform family of the times when you will
be having a call. Put a do not disturb
sign on your door.
• Avoid drinking, eating, or chewing gum.
Sound goes through and is visible.
• Test video when logging into an
important call.
• If going to the bathroom, make sure you
turn off your audio and video.
