The document discusses and analyzes three romance films - Love Rosie, The Best of Me, and Safe Haven. It summarizes the plots of each film and notes some of the main actors. The document also discusses common narrative elements in romance films, such as two main characters being separated but finding their way back to each other. Trailers for each film are analyzed in terms of narrative, iconography, audio/technical elements, and mise-en-scene. Reasons for enjoying the romance genre and differences in how males and females typically perceive the genre are also mentioned.
1. PR7
The genre of movie I am going to analysing is romance the three films I am going to be
analysing will be Love Rosie which is about a girl called Rosie and a boy called Alex who
have been best friends since they were 5, so they couldn't possibly be right for one another
or could they? When it comes to love, life and making the right choices, these two are their
own worst enemies, The Best Of Me which is about a pair of former high school
sweethearts reunite after many years when they return to visit their small hometown and
Safe Heaven which is about a young woman with a mysterious past lands in Southport,
North Carolina where her bond with a widower forces her to confront the dark secret that
haunts her.
I think what attracts me to these kind of films is that facts that it makes you feel like you
are the people in the film and when you watch films like this it is a escape from real life, I
also like these films because in The Best Of Me one of the main actors is James Marsden
and in Safe Heaven one of the main actors is Josh Duhamel and in Love, Rosie one of the
main actors is lily Collins.
In these films there isn’t really any intertextuality between them other than the fact that in
these films the both mains actors find a way back to each other in the films, this is another
reason I like these films because in the trailer it shows you them not being together and
they usually have some kind of quotes over the trailer to explain things but it doesn’t show
how they end up back together so I watch these films to find out how this happens.
2. When I choose to watch films I usually check who is in the films and I think the majority
of people would do this because if you had a film with Zac Efron in it and then a film an
actor that no one knew you would choose to go see the film that Zac Efron was in because
you would think due to him being a main actor that the film would be good.
Love, Rosie Trailer
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SqSE6Kzuht0
Over all in this trailer there is 3 main characters Alex, Rosie and Gregg, they are all shown
multiple time thought out the video with Alex and Rosie being shown the most as they are
the main characters of the film, the narrative of this film is love and in the film it shows
that Alex and Rosie have been friend with each other since they were really little and like
the majority of romance films they move away and ‘love’ brings them back to each other,
the iconography in this film is where is it shown with the two main characters growing up
together then falling in love which is what happens in every romance movie, the setting of
this trailer is based in Britain, the technical and audio codes of this trailer are the camera is
mainly still shots, the editing is fast pace to fit the music, there isn’t a lot of diegetic sound
just the characters speaking, the non-diegetic is the music which run thought out the whole
of the trailer, the mise en scene of this trailer is that is set in a small urban town which
you see a glimpse of at the start, and the lighting and colour are quite natural.
The Best Of Me Trailer
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tInHLB2YYsQ
Over all in this trailer there are two main characters Dawson and Amanda who were child
hood sweet hearts who got separated due to Dawson being in prison they then meet
20nyear later and fall in love all over again, the narrative of this film is like many romance
films something pushes two people apart and in the end they find their way back to each
other, the iconography of this film is when the two are shown together in high school and
fall in love but something happens like many romance movies, the technical and audio
codes of this trailer are that there isn’t any diegetic sound apart from at the start when the
oil rig blows up and the character speaking, there is non diegetic sound throughout which is
the music, the place where this is set isn’t really shown in the trailer b but you can tell it is
most probably set in America and finally the lighting and colour in the trailer is again very
natural due to the genre of the film as the makers are trying to make it look as normal as
possible.
3. Safe Heaven Trailer
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4vhm3_-3VM
Over all there is two main characters in this film Alex and Katie who meet because she
wants to get away from her old life, the narrative of this film is the same as the majority of
romance films as something happens to then whilst they are seeing each other with this
film is it Katie’s crazy ex-boyfriend, the technical an audio codes for this film are that there
are not a lot of diegetic sound just the explosion on the house and the characters talking
and with the diegetic sound there is a songs played throughout the trailer, the mise en scene
of this trailer is meant to be Southport and the lighting and colour in the trailer are natural
to keep with the realistic-ish theme of the film.
I found out about all three of these film using IMDB because I saw one of them on
Facebook I then looked on IMDB for the full trailer and the other two were in the
suggestions of what I also might like to watch.
Reception theory
My favourite film genre is romance, when I asked someone what they thought of this genre
they didn’t like it as they thought it was an un-realistic view of real life they didn’t see
how any romance films are realistic because of the fairy tale like ending they have although
the got that films are all fantasy and rarely have anything realistic in them they preferred
the action genre to any other when I asked them if they didn’t like romance what did they
like they said they liked the fact that in these films there was guns and explosions which is
very different to my preferred genre, I feel this may have been because other the person I
asked being male and stereotypically males do not tend to like the romance genre and are
very much pushed towards the genre of action.
Active Spectatorship & Fandom
For my chosen genre there is all sorts of fandoms and Facebook pages for the fans of each
of the three film I wrote about this is one of the main ways money is made of these films
as the more people share a Facebook page or comment on it about the movie the more
people go to see the movies and hear about them, there isn’t really and floors in the way
this film has been marketed they have done it properly resulting in many viewers and fans
for all there of the films.
