The Networks - Australia
• Mobile networks
3G: 5Mb – in major cities
4G: 12-15Mb (*Australian speeds)
4GX: top speed 150Mb
5G: Gb coming (due 2017-2021)
• WiFi networks
802.11b/g: 11/54Mb
802.11n/ac: up to 1.3Gb
802.11ax: potentially 10Gb
without more spectrum it will get worse and ax not ratified
until 2019 – kit will sooner (2016)
• Public Carrier WiFi is on the rise – Telstra Air, Optus, TPG..
10. COMMSDAY UNWIRED - SYDNEY 2015 VR THE WORLD
Data Plan Hell
• TodaysExamples Mobile Plans:
• Telstra $70 – 7GB
Vodafone $80 – 11GB
Optus $70 – 10GB
• Optus just launched Fixed Wireless 4G - $70 for 50Gb
• Thanks to OTT services like Netflix most Fixed line plans have been increased and
will have no issues with VR. However, coverage still an issue while waiting for NBN
• Just like Netflix, carrierswill have to figure out how to handle the large VR media
11. COMMSDAY UNWIRED - SYDNEY 2015 VR THE WORLD
2016/17 – The Networks
• More Data in plans
• More Apps being used – Death of SMS and normal calls. OTT - WhatsApp, Facebook,
Telegram, Skype, etc.
• More Speed - More 4GX from more carriers
• More Coverage - means new customers – even more network load
• More Demand – not a lot for 4GX right now – use cases will drive demand
• VR, IoT, SVOD, Cloud Storage, Mobile Gaming, Mobile Education, AR appearing
• Will have to be priced reasonably
12. COMMSDAY UNWIRED - SYDNEY 2015 VR THE WORLD
Summary
• VR is here to stay – AR is following
• Large file sizes on more devices means greater stress on WiFi and mobile
networks. Larger devices will mean even more data stored
• Service providers will need to allow for larger more flexible plans
• New wireless network standards need to be rolled out faster to cope
• We need to innovate… we need new ways to deal with the demands. OTT is
the networks worst nightmare... and it is only going to get worse
