Listening -
Definition
Listening is the ability to identify
and understand what others are
saying. This involves understanding
a speakers accent or pronunciation,
his grammar or his vocabulary, and
grasping his meaning. An able
listener is capable of doing these
four things at the same time.
 To learn
 To increase one’s understanding
 To advise or counsel
 To relieve one’s boredom
Objectives of
Listening
Real Listening
 Hearing: It means listening enough to catch
what the speaker is saying.
 Understanding: The next part of listening
happens when you take what you have
heard and understand it in you own way.
 Judging: After you are sure that you have
understood what the speaker has said, think
about whether it makes sense.
― Ralph G. Nichols
“The most basic of all human needs
is the need to understand and be
understood. The best way to
understand people is to listen to
them.”
Extensive Listening is what you may have
done outside the classroom. The goal here
is enjoyment and exposure. To do extensive
listening you listen to as many kinds of
resources as you can to improve your
listening fluency.
Two Routes to Improve Listening
Extensive Listening
Intensive Listening is what you do in the
classroom. The goal of intensive listening is
to focus on a certain detail. This focusing on
detail is often motivated by you having to
answer a question on a listening exercise or
test.
Intensive Listening
Extensive Listening – Developing Listening
through Technology
 Low Tech Components
 Radio
 Tape recorders
 Language Laboratories
 Mid Tech Components
 Videos
 High Tech Components
 Computer Technology
Radio
 Most accessible
 Real Time use only
 Broadcasts excellent language programs
 Student friendly
 Many teachers like to help their students
develop general or specific listening skills via
the radio
 Low-tech and radio broadcasts are
continuous
Tape Recorders
 Simplest and cheapest way
 An essential tool for language
classroom
 Tapes can be replayed and that
will help students to focus on the
main point
Language
Laboratories
 Most popular in educational
institutions
 Mechanical drills
 Repetition drills
 Quality materials are produced
Videos
 Received popularity in mid 1970s
 Obvious contextualization of
language
 Provided motivation to listen
 Rich context for authenticity
 Paralinguistic features of spoken
text
 Active viewing is promoted in
classroom
Computer
Technology
 Computer based listening tests
 CD-ROM based learning films
 Internet voice chatting
 Use of CD-player devices
 Target language digital stories help
to improve the learner's listening
comprehension
Why Listening is
Important?
 Communication is not complete without
effective listening
 An attentive listener stimulates better
speaking by the speaker
 A good listener learns more than an
indifferent listener
 A good listener can restructure vague
speaking in a way that produces
clearer meaning
 A good listener learns to detect
prejudices, assumptions and attitudes
Conclusion
.To become a good listener it is
really necessary to the overcome
barriers. As listening is the most
vital aspect of communication so to
become a good communicator it is
really important to overcome
listening barriers.
― Egan Gerard
“You do not listen with just your
ears. You listen with your eyes and
sense of touch. You listen with
your mind, your heart, your
imagination.”
