WHAT DOES A DOULA DO?
Recognizes birth as a key experience
the mother will remember all her life
Understands the physiology of
birth and the emotional needs
of a woman in labor
Assists the woman in preparing for
and carrying out her plans for birth
Facilitates communication between
the laboring woman, her partner and
her clinical care providers
Perceives her role as nurturing and
protecting the woman’s memory
of the birth experience
Allows the partner to participate
at his/her own comfort level
Stays with the woman throughout the labor and provides emotional support, physical comfort measures and
an objective viewpoint, as well as helping the woman get the information she needs to make informed decisions
A Doula is a specially trained and experienced professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support
to the mother before, during and just after birth. The word Doula comes from the ancient Greek, meaning a woman who serves.
WHAT IS A DOULA?
A Doula is NOT a hospital staff member
(such as a nurse)
A Doula is NOT a part of the mother’s social network
(spouse, mother, sister, friend)

At 6 weeks after birth, mothers who used a Doula had significantly:
“Overall, these results indicated that mothers
who had the support of a doula during labor
had a remarkably positive level of affectionate
interaction with their infants compared to the
other mothers two months after delivery.”
Having a Doula can counteract the negative effects of
a clinical hospital environment, helping a woman feel
more competent, with increased confidence in her
own abilities—not only in delivering a baby, but in
her mothering abilities as well.
