Effects of Some Materials on People
1. Foods like vegetables, fruits ,
fish, meat and juice, give our
body the nutrients it needs.
Foods packed or canned like
corned beef, sardines, fruit
cocktails, and others should
be check the ingredients or
substances contained in the
different materials and the
expiry date of the products
in the labels. You might be
buying food without
nutritional value.

Preservatives and
additives are
usually added to
processed food.Ex:
food coloring,flavor
enhancers,monosod
ium
glutamateMSG,
and sodium nitrate.
Eating too much
chips and instant
noodles can harm


3. Vitamins make our body more

resistant to sickness. Medicines like
paracetamol are taken to relieve
pain or treat diseases like headache
and fever.
Use these as prescribed by doctors.


4. Liquid detergents are used in
washing clothes. Muriatic acid
and other disinfectants are used
for cleaning the toilet and the
bathroom.
If not properly used they can
cause respiratory diseases
especially when it is inhaled.

These must be used as indicated
in the products labels.


5. Insecticides are used to
kill insects like
mosquitoes, flies, and
cockroaches.

If it is not used properly
it can make us sick.
Products labels should
be read before using
them.

Harmful Substances
Alcohol, cigarettes and certain
types of drugs are harmful to
people.
It can damage the lungs, body
organs and change the way a
person thinks and acts.
Person should always say
“NO” to harmful drugs to keep
the body fit and healthy.

Precautionary Measures in Handling Substances.
1.Always read the labels of products before buying them.

2.Do not buy products without the expiry date.

3.Insecticides, muriatic acids, and disinfectants should be
kept in places where children cannot reach them . Wear
gloves and cover your nose and mouth with mask. Change
your clothes and wash hands thoroughly after using
chemicals.

4. Keep flammable items, like gasoline and kerosene away
from the stove, fireplace and other sources of heat. They
can catch fire easily.

5. Take only the recommended dose of medicines as
prescribed by your doctor . Too much intake of medicines,
or overdosage, is not good to the body.

6. Provide designated areas for different household items.
Label all household items properly. Keep dangerous
chemicals in locked containers.

7. Dispose of used materials and dangerous substances
properly.
