The Wyckoff House is the oldest surviving example of a Dutch saltbox frame house in New York City, estimated to have been built in 1652. It was owned by Pieter Claesen Wyckoff and his wife Grietje van Nes, who settled in what is now East Flatbush-Flatlands, Brooklyn. Generations of the Wyckoff family enlarged and altered the house and farmed the land until 1901. The house is now a museum owned by New York City and was the first landmark designated by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1965. It hosts cultural events and educational programs about the history of Brooklyn.
5. Programs
Programs explore the diverse
peoples of Brooklyn.
They are all the social configurations
of Brooklyn from a rural Dutch
colonial farming settlement to a
retreat for wealthy nineteenth century
industrialists, to a haven for Jewish,
Italian, and other immigrants in
search of the American dream, to
today’s urbanized hodgepodge of
yentas, yuppies, Caribbean
islanders, African-Americans and
Eastern European immigrants.
