Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 – Mise-en-Scene<br />952592075Settings and Props<br />In this shot, we can see the film is set in a typical housing estate, as the building consists of newly built bricks and hedges that are typical of housing layouts. With the plant pot, hedge, and lamp it also gives the impression of a perfectly average styled home which does not contain much of the exciting scenes in the film. However, this average styled home idea that the character too has lived part of his life relatively normally. The character is central to the image, outside of the home door, holding a backpack in his hand and letting go of his owl; showing that the character is departing from this house and is to venture onto another scene. From the picture we can also see that the scene is set at night time, this gives the scene a mysterious and dark mood; which is also visible from the character’s facial expressions. This mysterious shot implies that the genre of film would be adventure, since the backpack represents the adventure that the character will undertake since leaving his home. <br />Costume and Make-up<br />The character in the centre of the image, Harry Potter, is wearing a simple red t-shirt with jacket, jeans and trainers. This simple combination of clothing suggests that film is set between the 90’s to the late 00’s. This quite recent setting of a film is also drawn from the building style, one which is commonly used in recently built estates. His clothing also indicates that he is neither wealthy nor poor, and that he is simply middle class. His glasses are also a common trademark of his character, which he is always seen to be wearing. <br />Figure, Expression and movement<br />From Harry’s body language, we understand that he is upset as he is letting go of his owl as his arm gestures that he regrets their separation. It is also clear from his facial expression that he is upset, most probably because the relationship between him and his owl, Hedwig, have to be separated. Importantly, Harry himself is stationary in the picture whereas Hedwig is mobile; this draw attention to Hedwig and then Harry in the picture so the audience is fully aware of their separation. This distance between Hedwig and Harry gives it a balanced shot, but at the same time both figures focus points of the picture. <br />Lighting and Colour<br />Interestingly, Harry is wearing a red shirt with plain blue jeans and jacket. The red brings a bright contrast to the neutral colour of the scene, consequently this draws the audience’s attention to Harry almost immediately as this make him stand out; so already the audience know his character is important. This red also may represent the love the character holds in comparison to the dark and evil which also features in the film. In contrast, the neutral colour scheme which is present in the browns and greens suggest unhappy and boring atmosphere which is associated with the setting from the character’s own feelings about the setting. The key light in this scene comes from the open doorway, which illuminates the character; it also signifies to the audience that this scene is set at night time as the light contrasts with the dark light from outside. The backlight comes from the window, and the filler light comes from the outside light. The filler light helps add lightning on the character, so the audience can see distinctly in the night his emotions. Whereas the backlight adds realism to the scene, showing at that time the house is in use, perhaps by other characters inside it. This overall low key lighting is used to reflect the gloomy emotions of the character. <br />Positioning of characters & objects within a frame<br />Both Harry and Hedwig are in the foreground of the picture as well in the middle so we know that both characters are important. However, Hedwig is mobile and about to evacuate the scene from Harry who is stationary, so this may represent also the difficulty of their separation. Both characters are positions directly in front of camera view at a mid-angle, so the audience specifically focus on each of the characters. This mid-angle shot also adds to the realistic value of the scene, so it would be similar view if the audience were stood right in front of the characters in the scene. The camera also allows a full body shot of the character which is important so we can see his body language as well as his facial expressions; from this shot it allows the background to be in focus so we can also identify the scene the characters are in. <br />
