2. INTRODUCTION
The traditional hotel industry has placed great emphasis on the provision of
quality service to guests. With the increasing demand for intensive information
from customers and hotel practitioners, hotels have adopted computer-based IT
facilities to improve operational efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance service
quality.
The investment in IT thus benefits the hotel if it enables customers to have a
better experience and the hotel staff to work more efficiently to better assist
customers.
3. Problems faced by Hotel Industry due to
lack of IT
there was a difficulty in manually maintaining past and
current guest details.
Problem in maintaining large number of labour
attendance and their account records.
Inaccuracy in maintaining hotel inventory which in turn
affect hotel profits.
4. Importance of IT
With local and international hotel establishments working overtime to tap into the
power of internet, in order to catalyze their sales and to improve customer relations, it
is only evident how internet is playing a key role in development of hotel industry
today.
Social networking portals like Facebook, Twitter etc. are increasingly playing a
dominant role in strategies of hotels all over. User generated feedback’s and reviews on
such websites play a huge role in popularizing the services of hotels by word of mouth.
Several other types of websites are working round the clock to bring travel related
products and services closer to end-user, either by way of making them available on the
clients’ desktops or via the exponentially rising number of mobile phone internet users.
5. Technologies used
Property management systems
In hotels a property management system, also known as a PMS, is a comprehensive software
application used to cover objectives like coordinating the operational functions of front office, sales
and planning, reporting etc.
Central reservations system
A computer reservation system or central reservation system (CRS) is a computerized system used
to store and retrieve information and conduct transactions related to air travel, hotels, car rental, or
other activities.
Global distribution systems
A global distribution system (GDS) is a network operated by a company that enables automated
transactions between travel service providers (mainly airlines, hotels and car rental companies) and
travel agencies.

7. Wi-Fi infrastructure overhauls
Nowadays, hotel guests who travel with devices such as phones, tablets and
computers no longer see Wi-Fi as a perk, but as a must-have when they
check in at a hotel.
Digital conference facilities
Besides being able to offer high density Wi-Fi for conferences and meetings,
hotels also need to be able to offer access to audio-visual (AV) and digital
facilities for conferences.
Smart room keys
Hotels will increasingly install smart room access systems that allow guests
to unlock their doors by simply swiping their phones across a keyless pad on
the door.
8. MirrorTelevisions
Imagine watching TV in the bathroom mirror during your stay. This is
already a reality at several luxury hotels across the globe, where guests
can watch high-definition TV in mirrors, usually while enjoying a
bathroom, sauna, or swimming pool
SmartThermostats
This one again involves using a guest's personal device. Hotels are
increasingly adding thermostat technology that will allow guests to
adjust the temperature in their rooms with a smartphone, even if they
aren't on the premises.
10. IMPACT
The main impact of IT has been in the front desk.
The property management has quickened the speed of service ; reduced the
labour cost ; improved accuracy ; and modernised the look and flow of lobby.
The self service kiosk that speed the guest along simultaneously saves the hotel
labour.
