EDHI Foundation is the largest non-profit organization in Pakistan, founded in 1951 by Dr. Abdul Sattar
EDHI. The foundation has 335 centers in Pakistan, providing health care and emergency assistance
wherever it is required. The main focus of this NGO is to serve humanity without any discrimination.
EDHI refrains from the financial support by the foreign aid giving agencies and believe in the principle
of self-help. EDHI says, “My religion is humanitarianism... which is the basis of every religion in the
world."
The establishment runs 8 healing facilities giving free therapeutic consideration in Karachi alone, 1800
ambulances encouraging 24-hour crisis administrations crosswise over Pakistan and abroad, blood and
medication bank, malignancy doctor's facilities, diabetic focuses, home for the dejected kids, air

Mr. Abdul Sattar started his first ever medical center in
the year 1951, which was at that time called as EDHI
trust.
He had only spent Rs.5000 in order to commence the
EDHI trust.
At this moment of time the EDHI foundation has more
than 300 centers that are spread all over Pakistan.
Whether it is large cities, small cities or the rural
areas of Pakistan, one will find a center of the EDHI
foundation out there.
It is through EDHI that many people across Pakistan
are having medical aid as well family planning and
emergency assistance.
5. ORIGIN OF EDHI FOUNDATION

The overall important contributions by the EDHI
foundation are as follows:
“ Saving more than twenty thousand abandoned
babies Training of forty thousand qualified nurses
Housing of over fifty thousand orphans in EDHI
homes across Pakistan.
If we take Karachi, the city where the foundation was
formed, in particular, we would see the
extraordinary services by EDHI.
Here, the EDHI foundation runs 8 hospitals. These
hospitals provide free medical care, surgical units,
diabetic centers, 4-bed cancer hospitals, mobile
dispensaries and eye hospitals”.

It was from a young age that Abdul Sattar EDHI was always
taught to be very kind towards people and help those who are
poor.
It was the same mother who became paralyzed when EDHI was
only eleven, later as a result of falling ill she died, EDHI was just a
nineteen years old boy at that time.
The death of his mother made him extremely sad, but also
created a new sense in his heart, the sense of loving humanity,
the sense of helping others.
He started involving in social work and doing work with the
social organizations. In the initial times, he could only manage to
buy a small van, which was his ambulance.

It was through this ambulance that h used to
travel across the city of Karachi.
He helped in giving medical aid and burying the
dead bodies that were unclaimed.
Soon, EDHI became famous for his efforts to
help the poor.
Due to this many people started trusting him a
lot and started donating to EDHI, which helped
him in expanding the operations of EDHI trust.

He employed staff and nurses for his
work, one of the nurses employed
there included Bilquis, who later on
married Abdul Sattar EDHI in the year
1966, today she also is the co
chairperson of the EDHI Foundation.
The EDHI Foundation created as
people saw its altruistic focuses. In
1973 when an old loft building given
way in Karachi, EDHI's ambulances and
volunteers were the first to achieve

Abdul Sattar EDHI was born on January 1, 1928 in
Bantva, Gujarat, India.

and settled in Karachi.
He soon started working with the welfare

He used to drive his ambulance

an active philanthropist and a nurse,

SOURCES OF FUND
According to Mr. Abdus Sattar EDHI, main
source of funds is “awaam” i.e. the masses.
In the words of Mr. Abdus Sattar EDHI,
“We have collection points from Lahore to
Siachin and from Murree to Thar Parker.”
In addition to a huge number of collection
points spread all around the country, EDHI
foundation also has its collection points in
New York, London, Kandahar, Toronto,
Kabul, Tokyo, Sydney, Dhaka etc.

SOURCES OF FUND
Mr. EDHI said,
“There is no shortage of funds, people from
all over the country trust him and donate
selflessly and even if there was any shortage,
I would just go outside the tomb of Quaid e
Azam and ask people for funds, and in a
mere two hours, I will collect more than
5,000,000 PKR.”
People of different religions such as, Hindus,
Quadianis, Christians etc, all donate in the
same manner without any reservations.

When asked if there was a possibility of misuse of funds, Mr.EDHI replied,
“There is a very strict system of accountability and reporting in place and
with Mr. EDHI himself and his son, a graduate from UK, personally

EDHI’s DEATH
Abdul Sattar Edhi passed away at 88 years
old in the late hours of Friday 8, July 2016.
Edhi had been experiencing kidney
disappointment since 2013 and was on
dialysis.
As indicated by his son, he couldn't
experience kidney transplantation because of
his propelling years.

EDHI’s DEATH
The country’s top civilian and military
leadership including President of
Pakistan Mamnoon Hussain, Chief of
Army Staff General Raheel Sharif, the
political leadership as well as
thousands of mourners attended the
funeral prayers of the country’s charity
king, Abdul Sattar Edhi at the National
Stadium Karachi, after which the great
philanthropist was laid to rest at the
Edhi Village followed by 19-gun salute
and military guard of honour.

A state funeral had been arranged for
Edhi’s final journey as his body, wrapped
in the green national flag, was given a
19-gun salute, military guard of honour,
carried on a state carriage to his final
resting place from the national stadium
where the country’s top civilian and
military leadership laid floral wreaths on
his grave while a final guard of honour
was presented besides prayers and
other religious rituals.
