Intro
We here at Great Minds Network Solutions thank you for providing us with the
opportunity to design your computer network and communications network that utilizes the latest
in cloud administrative technology. With over five years of combined hands on experience, you
can rest assured that you have made the right choice in your network choice.
Background
Great Minds Network Solutions (GMNS) provides automated cloud management and
secure solutions for small to mid-sized companies through the employment of the latest network
technologies and various cloud options.
Purpose
Great Minds Network Solutions (GMNS) will design and implement a windows
environment computer network infrastructure and security access system for First Bourne Tax
Services at their headquarters in Salt Lake City, UT – from this point forward referred to as
“CorpHQ” – and their branch office in Ogden, UT – from this point forward referred to as
“Branch”, to provide a secure and robust computer network that allows for fast and secure access
to information for income tax filing and other tax business related purposes.
4
Scope of Work
GMNS will install and setup a computer network infrastructure that will utilize the latest
in cloud services and cloud administration at the CorpHQ and Branch locations. The goal is to
provide a computer network option that will allow for remote administration of the network and
avoid the need for an onsite IT Support department. At each location, GMNS will setup and
install a physical and logical network infrastructure in designated room, setup all workstations
and print services, run all cat6 ethernet cables from server room to end hosts, implement security
badge access and IP camera monitoring system, and configure the cloud services for: email,
phone, database, and network user profiles. The estimated time to execute the design will be
between 6 – 9 months from start date.
5
6
7
IEEE Standards
This network utilizes the IEEE standard 802.11 for wireless communication, 802.3 for
fiber and Ethernet technologies. The recently added IEEE standard P2301 Working Group for
cloud profiles. The badge access controllers use the RS485 IEEE standard.
Collision Avoidance Technology
The 1:1 user/port assignment on the switches for all LAN hosts will enable full-duplex
connectivity and eliminate collisions within the network. Hosts on the wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi)
network will utilize the CSMA/CA (Carrier Sense Media Access/Collision Avoidance) protocol.
CSMA/CA will send a frame of data to the access point inquiring if there is any known traffic or
other devices connected to the access point that are sending data. If there is, the device will wait
a predesignated interval of time, then attempt to send the again. In the case that there aren’t any
devices transmitting data, the device will continue with the transmission process.

Hot sparing: Hot sparing is the process of
rebuilding a failed drive’s data onto a system-
selected compatible drive. Any unbound non-
system drive can be considered for sparing.
When planning Hot Spares consider the
reserve at least one of every 30 installed
drives of a given type o Verify count in the
-
naviseccli hotsparepolicy -list o Note:
Unbound system drives (Bus 0 Enclosure 0
Disk 0 through Disk 3) cannot be used as hot
hat unbound drives for each
drive type are available o SAS Flash must
spare for SAS Flash o SAS Flash VP must
spare for SAS Flash VP o SAS must spare for
SAS (regardless of rotational speed)
EMC VNX2 Unified Best Practices
for Performance Applied Best Practices
Guide 0
 NL-SAS must spare for NL-
SAS The capacity of an
unbound drive should be equal
to or larger than the
provisioned drives for which it
will spare.
 Usage of flash drives in hybrid
flash arrays EMC recommends
the use of flash drives in VNX
storage systems to maximize
the potential of the MCx
operating environment. EMC
recommends deploying flash
drives in the following priority
18
order:
 Configure Multicore FAST
Cache first
 Multicore FAST Cache is a
global resource that can benefit
all storage resources
 Note: Multicore FAST Cache
is not applicable for all-flash
arrays
 Next, add a flash tier to pools
containing thin LUNs
 The flash tier can accelerate
access to thin LUN metadata,
improving performance
 Configure at least 3% of pool
capacity in flash, to capture
metadata
 Thin Provisioned LUNs, VNX
Snapshots, Block
Compression, and Block
Deduplication all rely on thin
LUN technology
 Then add a flash tier to pools
utilizing FAST VP
 Configure at least 10% of pool
capacity, for flash acceleration
of active workload
 Configure at least 25% of pool
capacity, for near-all-flash
performance
 Finally, dedicate an all-flash
pool to storage objects with
very high performance
requirements
Fibre Channel and iSCSI connectivity
Fibre Channel connectivity is facilitated via
the FC I/O modules on the Block Storage
Processors. iSCSI connectivity is facilitated
via the iSCSI I/O modules on the Block
Storage Processors.
 Use multiple I/O ports on each
SP, and balance host port
connections across I/O ports, as
host port connections affect the
19
preferred CPU core assignment
 If not connecting all of the
available I/O ports, use the
even numbered ports on each
I/O module before using any
odd numbered ports
 Initially skip the first FC and/or
iSCSI port of the array if those
ports are configured and
utilized as MirrorView
connections
 For the VNX8000, engage the
CPU cores from both CPU
sockets with Front End traffic
Balance the Front End I/O
modules between slots 0-5 and
slots 6-10
 DON’T remove I/O modules if
they are not balanced; instead,
contact EMC support
 Balance host port assignments
across I/O Module slots 0-5
and 6-10
 AVOID zoning every host port
to every SP port
When registering host HBAs with
VNX OE for Block Storage Groups, make
sure to set the appropriate failover mode
based on the host type. See the Host
Connectivity Guides for details.
For Fibre Channel:
Ensure that the FC ports connect at the
highest speed supported by the environment,
preferably 16Gb or 8Gb
Consider the port count in use when
performance targets are required
 16Gb ports have a max
capability of 90,000 IOPS, or
1,050 MB/s
 8Gb ports have a max
capability of 60,000 IOPS, or
750 MB/s

Calculating disk IOPS by RAID type Front-
end application workload is translated into a
different back-end disk workload based on the
RAID type in use. For reads (no impact of
RAID type):
 1 application read I/O = 1
back-end read I/O
For random writes:  RAID 1/0 - 1 application write
I/O = 2 back-end write I/O

Determining which LUN type to
configure The VNX2 storage system supports
multiple types of LUNs to meet the demands
of different workloads and support different
features. In general, Thin Pool LUNs are
required for Block space efficiency features.
Pool LUNs in general (either Thin or Thick)
are required for FAST VP tiering. Classic
RAID Group LUNs do not provide support
for advanced features. In terms of
performance:
 Thin LUNs provide good
performance for most
workloads

Microsoft Server 2016 Nano
Processor: Minimum: 1.4 GHz 64-bit processor
RAM: Minimum: 512 MB
Important: If you create a virtual machine with the
minimum supported hardware
parameters (1 processorcoreand 512
MB RAM) and then attempt to install
this release on the virtual machine,
Setup will fail.
To avoid this, do one of the following:
Allocate more than 800 MB RAM to the
virtual machine you intend to install this
release on. Once Setup has completed,
you can change the allocation to as little
as 512 MB RAM, depending on the
actual server configuration.
Interrupt the bootprocess ofthis release
on the virtual machine with
SHIFT+F10. In the command prompt
that opens, use Diskpart.exe to create
and format an installation partition. Run
Wpeutil createpagefile /path=C:pf.sys
(assuming the installation partition you
created was C:). Close the command
56
prompt and proceed with Setup.
Disk spacerequirements: Minimum: 32 GB
Note: Be aware that 32 GB should be
considered an absolute minimum value
for successfulinstallation. This
minimum should allow you to install
Windows Server 2016 Technical
Preview in Server Core mode, with the
Web Services (IIS) server role. A server
in Server Core mode is about 4 GB
smaller than the same server in Server
with a GUI mode. For the smallest
possible installation footprint, start with
a Server Core installation and then
completely remove any server roles or
features you do not need by using
Features on Demand. Formore
information about Server Core and
Minimal Server Interface modes, see
Windows Server Installation Options.
The system partition will need extra
spacefor any of the following
circumstances:
If you install the system over a network.
Computers with more than 16 GB of
RAM will require more disk spacefor
paging, hibernation, and dump files.
Other requirements:
You also must have the following:  Gigabit (10/100/1000baseT)
Ethernet adapter
 DVD drive (if you intend to
install the operating system from
DVD media)
The following items are not strictly
required, but are necessary for certain
features:
 Super VGA (1024 x 768)
or higher-resolution
monitor
57
 Keyboard and Microsoft®
mouse (or other compatible
pointing device)
 Internet access (fees may
apply)

  • 3. 3 Intro We here at Great Minds Network Solutions thank you for providing us with the opportunity to design your computer network and communications network that utilizes the latest in cloud administrative technology. With over five years of combined hands on experience, you can rest assured that you have made the right choice in your network choice. Background Great Minds Network Solutions (GMNS) provides automated cloud management and secure solutions for small to mid-sized companies through the employment of the latest network technologies and various cloud options. Purpose Great Minds Network Solutions (GMNS) will design and implement a windows environment computer network infrastructure and security access system for First Bourne Tax Services at their headquarters in Salt Lake City, UT – from this point forward referred to as “CorpHQ” – and their branch office in Ogden, UT – from this point forward referred to as “Branch”, to provide a secure and robust computer network that allows for fast and secure access to information for income tax filing and other tax business related purposes.
  • 4. 4 Scope of Work GMNS will install and setup a computer network infrastructure that will utilize the latest in cloud services and cloud administration at the CorpHQ and Branch locations. The goal is to provide a computer network option that will allow for remote administration of the network and avoid the need for an onsite IT Support department. At each location, GMNS will setup and install a physical and logical network infrastructure in designated room, setup all workstations and print services, run all cat6 ethernet cables from server room to end hosts, implement security badge access and IP camera monitoring system, and configure the cloud services for: email, phone, database, and network user profiles. The estimated time to execute the design will be between 6 – 9 months from start date.
  • 5. 5
  • 6. 6
  • 7. 7 IEEE Standards This network utilizes the IEEE standard 802.11 for wireless communication, 802.3 for fiber and Ethernet technologies. The recently added IEEE standard P2301 Working Group for cloud profiles. The badge access controllers use the RS485 IEEE standard. Collision Avoidance Technology The 1:1 user/port assignment on the switches for all LAN hosts will enable full-duplex connectivity and eliminate collisions within the network. Hosts on the wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi) network will utilize the CSMA/CA (Carrier Sense Media Access/Collision Avoidance) protocol. CSMA/CA will send a frame of data to the access point inquiring if there is any known traffic or other devices connected to the access point that are sending data. If there is, the device will wait a predesignated interval of time, then attempt to send the again. EMC recommends deploying flash drives in the following priority
  • 18. 18 order:  Configure Multicore FAST Cache first  Multicore FAST Cache is a global resource that can benefit all storage resources  Note: Multicore FAST Cache is not applicable for all-flash arrays  Next, add a flash tier to pools containing thin LUNs  The flash tier can accelerate access to thin LUN metadata, improving performance  Configure at least 3% of pool capacity in flash, to capture metadata  Thin Provisioned LUNs, VNX Snapshots, Block Compression, and Block Deduplication all rely on thin LUN technology  Then add a flash tier to pools utilizing FAST VP  Configure at least 10% of pool capacity, for flash acceleration of active workload  Configure at least 25% of pool capacity, for near-all-flash performance  Finally, dedicate an all-flash pool to storage objects with very high performance requirements Fibre Channel and iSCSI connectivity Fibre Channel connectivity is facilitated via the FC I/O modules on the Block Storage Processors. iSCSI connectivity is facilitated via the iSCSI I/O modules on the Block Storage Processors.  Use multiple I/O ports on each SP, and balance host port connections across I/O ports, as host port connections affect the

See the Host Connectivity Guides for details. For Fibre Channel: Ensure that the FC ports connect at the highest speed supported by the environment, preferably 16Gb or 8Gb Consider the port count in use when performance targets are required  16Gb ports have a max capability of 90,000 IOPS, or 1,050 MB/s  8Gb ports have a max capability of 60,000 IOPS, or 750 MB/s

Office 365 ProPlus and Lync Basic users can defer installing updates for only 12 months from date of release. Hardware: The Office 365 ProPlus requirements are the same as the Office Professional Plus 2013 requirements. Some features in Project Online require connectivity to Project Pro for Office 365, Project Professional 2016, or Project Professional 2013.
