� The world’s largest wireless LAN (WiFi) hotspot spans the entire country of South Korea, and is
centralized in Seoul. Launched in January 2002, NESPOT has over 800,000 wireless access
points throughout the city of Seoul and surrounding areas, with over 1.2 million wireless users.
� KT’s high-speed Internet service called NESPOT enables easy Internet and content service
access through a notebook computer or PDA equipped with a wireless LAN card. The WiFi
service can be used anywhere within designated zones such as hotels, university campuses,
cafes, exhibition halls, airports, and on the subway while moving.
� The WiFi service was rolled-out in January 2002. With a subscriber base of over 6,500,000 users,
KT integrated the Wi-Fi portion of their network into a common RADIUS server infrastructure that
secures all wireline & wireless users over ADSL, ISDN, PSTN, and Wi-Fi.

� Mobile operators are getting increasingly interested in using Wi-Fi to
offload data from their overstretched 3G networks, and some, like
AT&T, have invested heavily in their own hotspots or in partnerships.
But none has yet gone as far as Korea's KT, which has called on
cellcos round the world to establish free global Wi-Fi roaming to
make offload even more effective.
� Hyun-Myung Pyo, president KT's mobile division, told the GSMA's
Mobile Asia Congress that the operator is offloading two-thirds of its
mobile data - around 2,500Tb a month - to WLans. "Operators need
to collaborate to build global free Wi-Fi roaming to offload 3G traffic,"
he said.

� Korean communications firm SK Telecom has unveiled plans for LTE, expanded Wi-
Fi coverage, new services and service plans. The new tariff plans and products still
need to be approved by the Korea Communications Commission (KCC).
� From August, 2010, SK Telecom plans to offer unlimited data service to users who
subscribe to higher-end All-In-One plans. The company will also introduce mobile
VoIP to customers who sign-up to All-In-One Plans 55, 65, 80, and 95 and Number
One Plan. To support the data services, the company will improve its 3G network
performance and expand network capacity.
� From October, 2010, the operator will offer expanded network capacity through the
bandwidth which was additionally allocated by KCC last May. The company will also
deploy HSPA+ in the Seoul metropolitan area, which will offer upload speeds of up to
5.76 Mbps and download speeds of up to 21 Mbps. SK Telecom also revealed it will
start providing LTE services in Seoul from 2011 and will expand the service to the
Seoul metropolitan area and six other cities by 2012. Nationwide coverage is planned
for 2013.
� To support the new service, SK Telecom plans to launch data modem handsets in
2011 and 2-chip handsets - devices compatible with both 3G and LTE - in 2012.
Additionally, the operator will establish 15,000 Wi-Fi zones before year-end, which is
50 percent more than the goal the company set at the start of this year. Finally, the
operator will also launch bundled products for households, which will offer free fixed-
line products to households, based on the number of mobile lines they use.
